Very good video. Excellent detail re: case clearancing and everything else including snap ring installation which is often omitted. Your speech is clear and on point. I've done stock boxes but I'm getting a DD6 for my FXR. I REALLY like the scotch tape over the splines. I've been wrenching (from aircraft on down) since the '70s and never heard of that one. Do more videos. You're effective at it!

Covering the splines before installing the seal is the only way to go. I learned that lesson the hard way with a shift shaft seal and the inner primary main shaft seal. It was a long way back in there to make it right.

Harley shop was asking 3 grand . DIY guy can buy lot of tools with the extra $2500

2:44 , Since you had the drive gear off did you replace the Caged needle bearings at each end ?? I have 80 thousand miles just did a rebuild on my evo engine last winter, rebuilding my 5 speed and Im replacing all the bearings , even the Clutch hub and inner primary bearing and race . I have learned over the last 20 years when you change out shafts & cam replace the bearings . so they break in at the same time .

I ride a FXR shovel ('83 with 5 speed)... I've been thinking for quite some time to upgrade to 6 speed ... I feel the shovel could handle an extra gear five questions : 1. does the Baker six speed fit into my gear box ( I have no idea if the shovel 5 speed casing is identical to the EVO 5 speed gear box) 2. how are the gearing ? Is it like adding a sort of overdrive, or does it split the torque more evenly, through the whole power band, without a real gain in top speed ? 3. does it come with extensive instructions, since I'm no trained mechanic, and have never done it before (I'm the average guy, with little tooling expertise). 4. keeping the original left side (chain) drive , I guess ... 5. last but not least : retail price nice tutorial, and nice beard ! I had to subscribe !

Go to forums rather than KZbin for tech questions as they'll be answered quicker. The vtwinforum FXR section is outstanding, as is Chop Cult. Contact Baker tech support (people really should go direct when possible) but AFAIK that case will work though it may need clearancing. However the old Hitachi starter is a POS and the best way to go if spending Baker money is a complete "splined shaft conversion" to later gearbox casting (bagger boxes get you the vastly better integral oil tank HD later used on all big twins to this day). The crossmember mods for that are trivially easy to do or have done right (ignore the Aspies who hallucinate changing small parts no one sees is sacrelige, their contentions aren't supportable by logic, reason or metallurgy!). The bagger box was the best mod I ever did to my FXR (now with a Baker OD 6 but the rest of the bike is in progress due to back problems). vtwinforum has gearing charts as does the Baker site. Spend some time reading and collect tech data in a library folder on your computer. It will make life much easier.

I wonder if Baker offers a bolt in kit for my original 5 speed gear box of my FXR Shovel '83 .

Contact them about sending in your transmission case but the wise move if spending Baker money is a full splined shaft conversion with the later, vastly better Denso OSGR starter which takes the aftermarket pushbutton solenoid end cover. Search "Harley splined shaft conversion" for (lots of) info. The best upgrade I've done to my '88 was a 1997 bagger box with integral oil pan (same trivial mods as a TC conversion) which can be viewed by searching "FXR twin cam conversion" (because that's most of them, and applies to your Shovel like my Evo since the alternator side engine case and output shaft are the same).

A few questions, is this a Baker conversation kit to go from a stock 5 speed to a six speed? I need to do that. When I’m in 3rd and I downshift, sometimes I’ll end up banging neutral instead of going into second, could this have to do with the shifting pawl adjustment, or would it be a shifting fork issue, what would you chase after first. Great video by the way, makes me feel confident. Thanks brother. 😎🇺🇸

Study the Baker site because you have a variety of gearing options depending on your motorcycle and you really need to be specific when choosing them, and when choosing between a DD 6 and OD 6.

Refer to your factory service manual. Not Clymer, Chilton or Haynes. Buy or download the factory service manual for your motorcycle or if the transmission is aftermarket, use the closest tech data available. Learn to use motorcycle FORUMS, not KZbin, for questions. KZbin is for watching videos. Manuals are for STUDY BEFORE you watch videos. Forums are for detailed questions. Know and understand this for your own benefit. Harley Tech Talk, vtwinforum and Chop Cult are good sources of info. When you post, give DETAILS and POST PICS of what you're working on. It helps others help you.

Ob Fuscated the problem with forums is you never know who's replying, if it is an actual guru or a snotty nose kid that "thinks" he knows without any real life experience. Your points are valid though.

There's lots of hardware available for Japanese machines which HD enthusiasts never see, but those tend to come with enough gears out of the box. I own and wrench both. Much love for my Harleys but the HD aftermarket thrives selling what HD should have done in the first place on a supposedly premium motorcycle.

@@obfuscated3090 I am by no means a harley snob. I own a third gen honda magna that I'm pretty happy with but I'm considering getting a dyna instead. Both have plusses and minuses and I've not hate for either one. At this point I like the nimble magna with the hot motor but I don't know......
