Hoping you can answer this, installing the baker smooth shift on my 05 Deluxe. When going through the shift pattern it does not seat in the shift drum in each gear after 2 without moving the drive a little. Installing with tranny in bike and pawl adjusted in third. Is that normal is my question

Yep that's normal, you need to spin the main shaft when up shifting and down shifting. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.

A friend will be in the US in January so he could bring me an order from Baker. I also need the shifter pawl and the smooth shift drum. @Tinkering With Harleys that's funny how people upgrade their Twinkie stuff yet I upgrade my Evo stuff to Twinkie. Lol I personally think the Twinkie shift drum and pawls are the best thing since sliced bread. I guess some people don't like their Twinkie stuff 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@kennethwise7108 I agree the shift drum and pawl is a great improvement over the old 4 speeds. The stock shift drum and pawl shifter I've found start to have issues if you're a little hard on the trans, which I am. I've had great success with the upgraded drum and pawl, that's why I use them. I’m wanting to upgrade my 2000 Dyna FXDS with the baker shifter pawl assembly along with theyre shifter drum but what’s stopping me is the tools to remove the primary as I don’t have any of them. About how many hours of labor should I expect for a job like this. I’m wanting to do this job because I’m always rolling past the next gear and either hit a false neutral or go up 2 gears instead of one

The job itself should take about 4 to 5 hours. Since you have a FXDS you don't need to remove the oil tank so that saves some time. To remove the outer primary you need a 3/16 Allen socket, to remove the inner primary you use 1/2 socket, to remove clutch you need a 1 3/16 socket and snap ring pliers the compensator 1 1/2 socket. If you chose to remove the pulley and inner race that's when you get into the specialty tools. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and ride safe.

Thanks after much thought I’m gonna go ahead and pull the trigger. My question to you is what would you recommend the Baker N1 Drum or their Smooth shift kit. They’re about a 30 dollar difference for my model. I daily my bike as I live in California with good weather all year round. So the only things I need for upgrading the gearbox are the anti over shift pawl assembly and whatever drum I choose from baker right? Plus all new seals and gaskets.

I don't like neutral on the bottom, but that's because I've been 1 down and everything else up for almost 60 years. Yep since you have it pulled apart replace the seals.

What is your opinion in just changing the shift drum with the stock shift pawl?

A stock shift drum and pawl will work just fine. I like to upgrade when I change them. The good aftermarket shift drums and pawl shift smoother and last a lot longer than stock. Thanks for watching and ride safe.

What do you torque the 4 bolts to ?

That's year specific as to what trans you have. Check you're service manual for specs.
