melanie's point in the discussion is completely spot on in my opinion. yeah, sure like kite man all you want, but it increasingly becomes so clear that ivy and him aren't good together because ivy's not as in it as he is. ivy more often tries to be invested in the relationship, but the keyword is 'tries'. she has to MAKE herself happy and satisfied with being with kite man and that's not a fulfilling relationship.

My issue is that in season 1, it seemed like she was happy with him, but she felt weird about it. She pushed off his proposal, but not because she didn't want to be with him, but because it was rushed and bad timing. It feels like between writing the seasons they completely switched gears, and it makes it feel less natural to me

@@mlgnerd13 I think part of what destroyed Ivy and Kite Man's relationship was that it was rushed too much (by them, not the show). Ivy has issues connecting to people in general because of her past and then she's suddenly thrown into the deep end of a relationship she's basically just started by having Kite Man propose to her twice. I think both were afraid they'd never be able to do better than the other, , so Kite Man immediately deems Ivy as "the one" and tries to start a whole life with her and Ivy doesn't want to risk losing maybe the only safe and stable relationship in her life so she talks herself into the marriage. They're not an outright bad couple but they were not connecting beyond the surface level because they, especially Ivy, didn't want to rock the boat and risk creating conflict between them. But you need to be able to see the issues in order to address and fix them and keep the relationship healthy and they didn't do that. It's the advantage Harley and Ivy have. They have been through highs and lows together and worked to improve themselves, especially Harley.

@@aros0018 I think that's a fair explanation, but I think you could have presented that conflict earlier in the relationship if that's the way they were going to go. It just feels, to me at least, like a heel turn because Harley fans love Ivy and Harley together. And I think they should have spent season 2 breaking up Ivy and Kiteman and then started building the Ivy and Harley romantic relationship

@@mlgnerd13 Season 1 had Ivy acting embarrassed of Kite Man, keeping their relationship secret from everyone save for his roommate, wouldn't give an answer to his "Will you marry me?" and kind of kept pushing it off until even after she was seemingly killed by Joker, and in both seasons never naturally says "I love you" to him, it's almost always tacked on or her responding to him saying it. They weren't living together, she didn't meet Kite Man's parents until after they were engaged and she most certainly never mentioned her own father who is a huge part of her baggage, they never share any interests or experiences beyond the surface level, and they never actually talked about what their future together could be like or what they wanted it to be. I think the implication throughout is that Kite Man wanted a lot more from their relationship while Ivy always tried keeping things at a distance.

Harley and Ivy definitely deserve to be together! I do feel bad for Kiteman, but like you said Ivy just isn’t into him and that isn’t her fault. She tried and thought she found someone she loved and it just didn’t work out in the end. Though it’s still pretty wrong to have cheated that many times and still tried to go ahead with it..

I think Ivy's problem was that she wanted a relationship that was no risk and completely safe. Understandable, given her past with her father's abuse and even Harley later unintentionally hurting her. But essentially she was just using Kite Man. She never had any intention of letting things get as serious between them as it did. Safe for her was not opening up beyond the surface level. Sex, TV, cooking and eating chili, etc. Stuff that's enjoyable, sure, but love requires connection. A healthy relationship requires addressing any issues between those in it. And even if subconsciously, Ivy denied Kite Man even the chance for either.

@@aros0018 While the harIvy was well developed I would have liked that the show in the second season fleshed out Kite Man character more or that they would have been more serious in treating his character, I feel they used him too much as the running gag or plot device. The final moments of Kite Man imo felt more like a consolation prize than development for the character.

@@lalithadavi4845 Ivy did ask for Kite Man to propose the third time, but I think that was because, like he with her, she was afraid she'd never be able to do better and didn't want to risk losing him and being alone. Kite Man is basically one of the only two big human connections Ivy has in her life, the other being Harley. She pushed herself into something neither of them were ready for because they never deal with any of their issues beyond the surface level, mostly because Ivy doesn't like opening up to others and risking getting hurt.

This show is so smart. They knew they had to have this JL vs Harleys Team fight, but Harleys squad are basically babyfaces working on the same side, so in order to have the battle they get mind controlled... and we actually get concerned the Justice League may actually kill them because of it. Never in the series had I actually had concern for the team before... but they pulled it off here. Their utilization of the JL is pretty perfect for this show, giving them just enough shine to make them look unstoppable, but also giving them enough to do off screen that they aren't constantly messing with Harley.

Plenty of drama and conflict to be had in that regard.

@breadstickzzzzzzz Um...they're BOTH at fault for how their relationship ended up. Nobody, not even the person you're replying to, said Ivy has no responsibility for what happened. Kite Man pushed their relationship too hard too fast and Ivy's abandonment issues had her never open up enough so that they could address and potentially fix the problems in their relationship. They were both afraid they'd never be able to do better than the other and thus rushed things. Ivy was basically kind of just using Kite Man, not wanting a deep relationship like he did and rather just one with no risk that would be there whenever she needed it.

The issue is that the show presented Ivy and Kiteman as a good relationship for both of them in season 1. There were really no romantic scenes with Ivy and Harley. It was only in season 2 that they made Kiteman's feelings almost completely one sided. And then Harley and Ivy was presented as an affair in a seemingly stable relationship. That's not a good way to get the audience on that couple's side. They were kind of banking on the love the fandom has for Ivy and Harley, and it seems to have worked decently well. I don't think it's terrible, but it can be a little off putting

It is kind of selfish but it's also the most mature thing she could have done. Harley believed Ivy had similar feelings for her as she does for Ivy, and she wasn't exactly wrong, so she asks Ivy if she wants to be with her, enough that she'd be willing to break things off with Kite Man. It'd certainly suck for Kite Man to have his fiancée suddenly end things to be with someone else but the alternates are either she keeps cheating on him or Ivy is stuck in a relationship she'd rather not be in, both of which are worse and even more selfish.

I honestly have mixed feelings about the Harley/Ivy ship in this show. For one, I've never really been much of a Harley/Ivy shipper, mostly because the pairing was first introduced to me in Batman: TAS and people tend to forget that the pairing in that iteration could be just as toxic and abusive as Joker/Harley. It definitely works better for me in the comics, as they have a much healthier dynamic there. I figured they'd go the Harley/Ivy route back when the show was first announced, and I really enjoyed the characters and their relationship in the first season, but as some others have said the way they had the relationship evolve in season 2 doesn't flow well with me. It feels a bit forced and like they're just pandering to shippers at the expense of Kite Man. I'm not saying I wanted Ivy to 'settle' for Kite Man, but having her and Harley cheat on him multiple times like that just made me root for Harley/Ivy a lot less. There are plenty of better ways the writers could've handled it without going the route of "It's okay to hurt other people as long as you're true to yourself". Don't get me wrong, I wasn't a huge Kite Man fan, but the more it became apparent that he actually cared about Ivy the more he grew on me. Having him get tossed under the bus for the sake of the Harley/Ivy romance just felt unnecessary. In the end the way Harley and Ivy got together felt forced/contrived and unnatural to me, like they were, as I said, pandering. That being said, I don't mind Harley and Ivy being together, I just wish they'd spent some more time on it and have it evolve at a more natural pace.

i think most issues could have been solved with a break have Ivy break up with kite man but not have her and Harley hook up right after give the characters time to process and deal with the aftermath and maybe have them hook up at the end of the next season that being said nowadays shows never know if and when they get new seasons, animated shows especially so

I know it's been a year but I personally think the whole cheating plot worked for their characters specifically. They're messy characters that make a lot of mistakes, adults make a lot of mistakes. Cheating's a horrible thing to do but it happened and they need to work on that as adults. If any, I actually wouldn't want their relationship to be clean and super wholesome all that time, that's just not possible- shitty things happens to adults and they are supposed to be villains with a lot of emotional problems.

It's the fact that they cheated, expressed the fact that it was a mistake and a terrible thing to do, then just continued cheating without remorse. They didn't suffer any negative consequences for their actions. Like I said, I didn't particularly like Kite Man, but there were so many better ways for the writers to end the relationship between him and Ivy, than just throwing him under the bus with a shrug. I don't blame the characters. Harley and Ivy are villains, they're shitty people in their own way. I do, however think 'have Ivy and Harley cheat on Kite-Man three times in a row without any remorse to show where Ivy's heart truly lies' was a particularly lazy, uninspired and contrived way to get Harley and Ivy together. Even when looking back on it now, one year later, it still feels like pandering rather than a natural, organic evolution of the relationship.

@@TheCh023n1 my idea series would b this Season 2 ending would be ivy marrying kite man. Season 3 would be them learning that they aren't a good fit but too afraid to break it up. Ivy then has a moment of weakness and cheats on kite man with ivy. End of season 3 would be the divorce and harley thinking they would b together. She gets rejected. Season 4 would b about self love and learning more about themselves and at the end giving harley a chance after ivy forgives her self and apologizes to kite man
