Harley Sportster EP5 - Controls, Lighting, & Accessories Modification
www.revzilla.com/sportster-mod...
Read more about the Sportster mods at Common Tread
www.revzilla.com/common-tread...
It started with a full review of the 2016 Harley Sportster Iron 883. Then came episodes 1 - 4 when we tackled some of the most common Sportster modifications commonly seen, and our opinions on what we liked best. Now, to round out the Sportster Mods series, Lemmy spends Episode 5 talking about, well, everything else! In being let loose to indulge his druthers Lemmy went all-in with the best controls, best lighting, and best accessories to make the Harley Iron 883 stand out even more amongst the crowd. With the Harley Sportster EP5 - Controls, Lighting, & Accessories video, the goal was simple; finish this Iron 883 off with the final touches that intricately define a one-of-a-kind modified Sportster.

Hey RevZilla. Why not consider a (bolt together) series. For the people that like to buy their own frame and like to build their bike. Ordering all different parts so it’s unique, I’ve found a lot of my friends want to do that but when we all look on KZbin theirs not a lot of content their that’s easy to understand. I feel you guys could do something like that and do it right.

Flipping the logo upside down was something a lot of guys used to do during the amf days. Flipping the logo was a way of saying you don't support what Harley is doing/and or has become. It also stood for FTF. Or f the factory.

There is something that tickles me about buying a new HD only to rotate the HD logo to indicate your disapproval. I would think a better strategy would be to buy another motorcycle, but honestly - it seems like that's what folks are doing. Which is good... and bad - HD is in such a tight spot what with having a shrinking core customer base, but consistently pissing off the core base when they try to bring new people into it. So potential customers don't want a heavy, technologically inferior, expensive machine (mostly, acknowledged there are a handful of cheaper HD models) and the core guys don't want anything that isn't what HD has been doing for 50 years. Talk about damned if you do damned if you don't.

Fantastic series of videos, Lemmy. This is the new gold standard for Sportster mod videos and will get hundreds of thousands of views over the next years - until none of the products you recommend is in production anymore... You built pretty much the perfect Sportster - until this last episode. The Scrambler look really doesn't work on this bike. Come on, it's a city prowler, people will ride this to the ice cream parlor and to the movies, no-one takes a Sportster off-road. Performance-focused road tires and some other performance mods to the engine would have made much more sense.

From the beginning this series was meant for stuff a noob could do with a cheap set of hand tools and no previous experience. FWIW, I think the biggest gap in the build is getting some heavier real hetro non-progressive springs for the front. Revzilla doesn't carry them though. Neither does Sonic, but somebody does.

One thing to be noted about switching handlebars. If you slide the right side controls off, it will damage the pin that activates the rear brake light. There is a spacer that needs to be inserted to protect it when removing. If the pin breaks your rear lights will be on high all the time and melt the bezels.

Sad to see this series end, don't even look twice at Harleys but that bike is bitchin!! Another series like this definitely has my vote, whether it's another cruiser (Suzuki M109R personal preference), or a standard/sportbike (please not an R6, they're everywhere), I'd love to see another mild build series from my favorite Harley hugger.

I hope this series makes a comeback, it's definitely one of my favorite things so far on Revzilla. I'd like to see this continued, but sweep over to some mods that you ship out the bike/engine for. A s&s 1200 conversion and a custom tank and mudguard paint job are usually the next points an iron owner looks to for personalization. Showing how to prep for those properly would be a good piece of info for bike owners.
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 жыл бұрын
Our goal is to keep these accessible and generally DIY. While it might be cool to do a 1200 conversion or custom paint, it might make more sense to show some love for other popular bike models first. -DrewZilla

Just bought a 2014 Iron 883 for $5k. It has a whopping 300 miles on it. It’s basically a new bike. Previous owner bought it new, rode it off and on for awhile, had an incident that scared them so they parked it. Only started up and ran a few times a year. A good bath and it looks great. Runs great too.

Hey Lemmy, my HD dealership said that because I didn't use a Harley Davidson brand headlight, that I am running the risk of burning my ECU, messing up the fuel injection system, and can possibly mess with the Can Bus system. They said that the electrical is so sensitive on the newer bikes that I should just take it off. What do you think? I installed an aftermarket LED Headlight and some Auxbeam floods.

I would love to see a series on modding the FZ-09 or XSR900 (or both since a lot of parts fit both). The 09 is hugely popular so that'd be a good pick I think. My other vote would be for something fun but in need of work from the factory - like the Suzuki DRZ400SM. It has potential but it's slow and looks like it's from the 80's.

The tires aren't that bad actually. As for the 970 shocks, we used the taller 13" length, but they also come in a 12" length, which likely would be fine for you. What are sone suggestions for mods that i can do you change the look of my sportster xl1200c? I also want white wall thick tires and a cafe/flat trscker look.
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 6 жыл бұрын
Basically everything we've done in all the Sportster Mods Videos should provide some good inspiration. Also, the cafe racer look is different from the flat tracker look. The Cafe racer style has mid- or rear-set foot pegs and clip-on handlebars for a hunched over look. The flat tracker look has more upright bars for a more upright riding position. Availability of white wall tires depends on your specific model year and tire size. For some detailed recommendation, I recommend speaking with one of our Harley Parts Pros at 877-792-9455 or via email at cs@revzilla.com. -DrewZilla

question for liamie how was the seat after riding passanger comfort level? I need a new seat for my wife
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 7 жыл бұрын
I recommend you watch Episode 4, which is specifically on seats. There is good passenger feedback. Keep in mind that what works for one person might not work for someone else. Generally, the wider the seat, the more comfortable it is. -DrewZilla *kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX3Vm3uMhK98m9U

Are those tires ok to put on a 2014 iron 883, I saw my Bike the rear tire is 150/80 but you guys dont have that tire size?
@RevZilla

Lemmy put on a narrower size just for the project. Generally, we wouldn't recommend these tires for all-around riding, as the rear isn't available in the stock 150 size. -DrewZilla

What Harley would you get Spurgeon? I know you like the cafe thing but I'm torn between a Thruxton and a Roadster. They both look bad ass, with the Harley looking meaner. But the Tumpents are faster right?
@SpurgeonDunbar
@SpurgeonDunbar 8 жыл бұрын
Are you looking at the new Thruxton vs the Roadster? If so, yeah. That Thruxton has real sport bike bits on it now and that new 1200cc liquid cooled engine is a beast compared to the old 865cc. I haven't ridden the Roadster but I have ridden other 1200 Sportsters, and if it were my money between these two bikes, I would go with the Thruxton. As for what Harley would I buy? It would be between a Road King and a Street Glide Special. After spending more time riding Harley's over the past two years than I have in my entire 11 years riding motorcycles, I have come to appreciate them for what they are. When I rode across Texas last year with our producer, Brett, it was so nice to lock into 55 miles an hour and just watch the miles roll by. So often with the bikes I normally gravitate toward, the scenery becomes nothing but a blur.

Spurgeon Dunbar I really like classic bikes and cars thats why I'm torn between the Triumph and Harleys because they look so classic. I want to enjoy the NorCal coastline and national parks and have a bike small light enough for a short commute into San Francisco where its crowded with cars, bikes and bicycles and pedestrians.

@RevZilla
@RevZilla 7 жыл бұрын
The Sportster we reviewed out in Nevada had an oil issue, but the one we used for our mods series didn't. You can still have some oil come out the breathers into the intake, but that's normal and not a huge deal honestly. -DrewZilla
