I learned soon after buying my first HD that everything about the dealer is a big rip-off . I owned 1 new Harley and ended up doing the 1,000 mile, and the rest of the services myself. The second time I bought a Harley at a dealer it was used and they tried playing A LOT of games and added charges. I ended up walking out but the sales manager came running out and finally agreed to a straight deal Since then I only go into a Harley dealer as an absolute LAST resort for parts I can't find anywhere else and I buy my bikes from private party sellers.

I just watched Matt Laidlaw's video about his shop's 1K mile check up. I had no idea what was involved in this service. They checked the tightness of every nut, bolt and screw on that machine along with the tension on the spokes on the wheels. Oils were changed and clutch adjustments made. Seemed like a pretty good service to me. That bike is certified road-worthy when they get done with their service. Washed and sparkling clean when delivered back to the customer. Years ago I went into a bike shop and they had a used Harley sportster on their showroom floor. They wanted to charge a "Used bike service fee". That bike still had caked up dirt on the chain, wheels and frame work. When I asked what kind of service they performed this bike that left it in this condition and the salesperson just said; "It's our fee. Take it or leave it". Obviously I left it as fast as I could get to the front door.
@Leftycraig48 Жыл бұрын
Smart move. Same story here. Harley dealer wanted to charge $599 for a used motorcycle service fee (2017 Sportster with under 1800 miles) which consisted mainly of an oil change and tire pressure check. Hit the door and never looked back.

I will definitely have the first service done there. And probably the 10k service. 5qts of syn engine oil at 12.95 a qt. Two qts of formula plus @ 8.95, or two qts of syn gear oil @ 20.00 a qt. Oil filter bout fifteen bucks. Spark plugs, (4) if you need em, @bout 4 bucks ea. Tank has to come off to change em .O rings and derby seal bout eight bucks. First service is at 2K. Fluid change and thorough check over. 10K is the whole magilla. Check bearings brake fluid/ pads, drive belt, full fluid change, forks... Some shops are straight up hourly, some are book rate. The shop I worked at are trustworthy and keep good, trained mechanics. I've only owned two new bikes. My 94 FXDL, still have it, and my 2022 FXBBS.

I was fortunate in that most of the miles ridden under the 2 year warranty were reimbursed at 53 cents per mile. It took the sting out of the 1, 5, and 10K mile services. There is one huge benefit to having a dealership perform your service work: it's entered into a company database, or so I was told. If you're on the way to Sturgis and the engine says sayonara in Iowa the dealership they tow you to will smile and tell you that since they have the records and your bike was serviced a new engine is on its way. If you have an indy do the work, they can fight you tooth and nail. That's what I was told.

That job doesn't take 1 hour to do well. Insane the maintenance program Harley recommends and people pay it. I'm done with Harley and my DCT Wing manual calls for first oil/filter change at 4k, and every 8k after that and change the filters every other oil change. Everything in a HD dealership is a rip-off.

Well you could have a Ducati with $1600 desmo service

You take any vehicle to a dealership, you gonna pay too much. I did my own after getting my first 1000 miles service. Over 400 bucks and that was 2017😮

Wow....$600 for a $30 oil change. That's nuts.
@samheninger505 Жыл бұрын
To do it yerself it's more like $95 or more if you use a new gasket on primary, 1qt gear oil for transmission $15. 1qt gear oil for primary $15 3 to 4 qt 20w50 motorcycle specific motor oil $48 ,oil filter $15 , primary gasket $15 doesn't have to be changed every time the oil level sits below the gasket if it leaks you don't have to drain the oil out to put a new gasket on. Ya I can change the oil in my truck for 30$ but not my harley 8-(

Just do it yourself… after I spoke to them, they gave me about the same total, decided to do it myself. No one takes care of your baby better than yourself.

its pretty much a scam and a waste of money. i don't think i will ever have a dealer service my bikes ever again. i can look it over and do a t-clocks inspection fine on my own. then if the do find something wrong they try to charge you extra to fix it like it isn't part of the scheduled maintenance. such a scam

That is unbelievable. What a rip-off. The 1,000 miles service on my new Rebel 1100cc Honda was $230.00 on the Jersey shore. This is one of the reasons I would not buy a Harley ever. Why do they have to rip off the people all the time?
@williamkennedy8768 Жыл бұрын
Think you can do it your self lot’s cheaper check youtube never take my bike to no dealership have no problem with getting my hand dirty 6 yrs ago rode a 02 sporty did all work my self and yes I bought at mankato Harley in southern Minnesota but ride a victory v92 would never take to a dealership when my old ass man keep me busy

I'd rather let it blow up then pay 600 lol, but to each their own

Buy you a set of tools and do it yourself it's not that hard you'll save everything but a hundred bucks a hundred bucks should be able to do all that old change and the filters and everything and just take a Saturday you ain't doing nothing and do it you got a manual the manual tell you how to do it sometimes you got to read to learn thank you
@stevenlangdon-griffiths293 Жыл бұрын
600 dollars? Not bad really. You see, chipping away those barnacles, clearing off the seaweed from your boat anchor and a wire brush and grease up. Yeah, not bad really.
@LyntisMoten4 ай бұрын
Definitely not worth it. Learn to do it yourself. That's peace of mind.

Why are you people always acting surprised and going to KZbin to complain? Lol Until the baby boomers go away, they will keep bending over and pleasing HD. HD is spoiled by those people, at least they're making innovations in the pan america and new sportsters.
