Derrick Day: I left Christianity because it's time to jettison mythology

Today I spoke with Derrick Day, a former Christian preacher who dabbled in progressive Christianity for a time before fully deconverting.
As we walked through his story, we touched on various topics, such as:
• How the horrific Christian response to the social and political issues of the last few years has helped many people see through the hypocrisy and foolishness of Christianity and the church.
• How the Bible is used for subjugation and control.
• The Biblical perspective of focusing on minute details (how to tithe, what fabrics to weave together), while ignoring gross injustices.
• The only passage in the Bible that talks directly about abortion (Numbers 5), where the Yahweh character advises a priest how to create a magic dust potion and create abortions in supposedly unfaithful women.
• How the Bible does not stand up under honest scrutiny.
• The fact that there were dozens of other gospels and epistles, and that most Christians are entirely unaware of them, unaware of how some went in and out of the canon, fail to ask the questions of why those other books were left out, and fail to be shocked at why their church leaders never mentioned them.
• The appeal yet ultimate emptiness of progressive Christianity.
• The idea that if you haven't at least flirted with the idea that there is no god, you haven't deconstructed far enough.
• How the evolution of humanity's mindset will require us to jettison religion.
• How leaving Christianity is about graduating from bad ideas in order to become the best person and embrace the most accurate worldview we can.

Good point on the history, Epic of Gilgamesh, etc, but if you really drill down you find that Yahweh originated as a lesser Canaanite god, which were evolved from a blend of Sumerian and Egyptian influences, then Yahweh branched off into Yahwism, a monolatristic belief system, a precursor to monotheism, where Yahweh was a chief god, had a wife Ashrah, and the other gods were still recognized, then transitioned to Judaism with Yahweh the one and only god. You even see this transition in the Old Testament, and reason for the 1st Commandment. Its amazing that people still follow ancient myths.

I can easily imagine that many who become spiritually evolved will find it very difficult to have blind faith in the Church. Jesus alluded to a personal, uncomplicated spiritual journey of self realization: "The Kingdom of God is Within." Whereas the religion, that he did not create, places emphasis on public demonstrations of faith, and a hierarchy of authority deciding what you must believe to be a member. Over forty thousand denominations control their followers with different rules of membership!

Fantastic interview. My own deconstruction journey is in its early stages. Was super helpful to hear both your thoughts Tim and Derrick. Trump was the catalyst for me too. Seeing how evangelical Christians seemed to support such abhorrence. Then closer to home my own Christian community not being accountable and also building a narrative in order to push forward an agenda. Having been a 4 year old convert, father was a pastor, have preached many times, and having lead worship for many years, I never every thought I’d be in this head space. Yet loving science and critical thinking, I can’t deny that what I’ve been brought up on might not be as it seemed.

But after studying the origins of Christianity in depth, finding quotes and copying in the Gospels from Homer's Illiad and Odyssey, from Euripedes Bacchae, from Vergil, even from Pythagoras, finding the Gospel of Mark structured according to the constellations of the Zodiac, in the right order, finding 100 quotes from the book of Enoch in the NT, ad infinitum, it just kept blowing my mind, and eventually I realized this is an entirely different construct than I thought it was.

I've been an atheist since I was a kid and rejected the Catholicism I was being fed, that was over 50 years ago and at a time I had to be a closet atheist or get ostracized. The aversion to swearing from the Christian mindset always bothered me. Perhaps they equate it with anger, which could be threatening, but I couldn't see how it reflected on a person's true character. Years ago my dad would substitute 'darn' and 'sheesh' all the time among his bowling team friends and it felt awkward to me, like this was an odd, abstract way to be earning points for entry into heaven. Eventually I parsed it all out, thanks to introspection and honest discussions found on this great channel. Keep it up Tim, hope you go full time in no time!

Why does it bother you that people don't swear? 😄 I'm an atheist and I don't swear because I was taught to use proper sentences to express anger, annoyance or surprise. It doesn't bother me when other people swear occasionally, but too much reliance on swear words makes me think of poor language skills or short temper.

Not a big deal by itself but 'God is judging you' seems like the true motivation and leads to other modified behaviors. Also, it does seem counterintuitive but many with advanced language skills use liberal profanity, though I would have to agree with the 'short temper' part, it does factor in.

But when I at times actually listen to what he tells his audience, there's just those who I feel are so entrapped in Christianity. I find myself haven't followed a similar path of deconversion that Derrick took. I was a life-long Christian (raised in the church) and a devout believer, but began looking the Bible with more of a clear view in looking at how "Christians" supported Trump. Once you start allowing yourself to ask reasonable questions about what you believe, the whole thing quickly tumbles. Unfortunately my wife is still deeply entangled in the whole Christian thing.

If you're saying that education doesn't equal intelligence then I agree 100%. I know many intelligent religious people who have been Christian their whole lives and show no signs of giving it up. The contrary view of intelligent design is…stupid design. If there are some things in the universe that almost seem ‘clever’ or might be designed (though that’s a common anthropomorphic tendency we have too). But there are a ton of things in nature that COULD NOT be designed by a knowledgeable creator because they would be stupid design because they are horrible. The pharyngeal nerve in a giraffes neck is one, the rods and cone arrangement in the human eye is another and the esophagus and trachea merging in humans causing thousands of choking deaths every year, yet dolphins and whales breathe through separate holes and never die because of choking

You listed 5 reasons why you left the Christian faith. I left the Christian faith over 40 years ago for 4 of the same reasons you did (I believe Jesus actually existed(. He was one of many individuals in area at the time claiming they were the "Son of God" trying to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament prophets. Jesus enlisted the help of 12 believers (disciples) to help spread the word and then realized he needed to make the supreme sacrifice of his life to bring about the apocolyptic "Coming of God". What upset me about Jesus isn't Jesus. It is what Christian theologians have done over the years to make Jesus more than what he actually was (a selfless carpenter with a good message). They stopped short of claiming he had a red cape with the letter "S" on his shirt, but they called him the Son of God, the Holy Ghost (a political compromise at the Council of Nice). The other reasons I left the church, beside the other 4 you stated that I completely agree with, are these. 1) The violent history of Christians - rape, pillage and murder in the name of Christ during the 3 crusades, the internecin fighting between protestants and catholics in Northern Ireland as just 2 examples . 2) the forcible conversion of groups like the native American Indians and Hawaiians and the relentless drive to convert others throughout our world. 3) When you study world religions like Taoism, Muslim, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Shintoism etc you find that they essentially have a common message - Do unto others as you would have the do to you. Christians don't focus on the message - they focus on the messengers (Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius among others). 4) The horrible belief that those who don't accept Jesus as their messenger will be condemned to Hell. How arrogant and self serving. The universe is made up of millions of galaxies, trillions of stars and many more planets that are almost certain to sustain life as we know it. How can we condemn everyone else in the universe to Hell if they don't know Jesus. The hypocrisy is stunning. 5) Stephen Hawkings said it best - you may believe that the laws of nature are the work of God - but that is a definition, not a proof of existence. If I were to define what I believe, I am more inclined to align my thoughts with those of Epicurus. As Thomas Jefferson said, "I am an Epicurean". So am I. There is no Heaven or Hell or afterlife. We are made up of atoms. When we die, these atoms will return to nature and over billions of years, re-emerge in nature - plants, animals, minerals - but never in the same way as the human body. Just some thoughts from the cheap seats.

Good interview, but I will disagree with your guest on one point. As far as I am concerned, there is no evidence for “intelligent design”. In fact there is quite a bit of evidence that says if “God” designed everything, he was really lousy at it. There are scores and scores of examples of “features” that make perfect sense as the end result of an undirected process like evolution, but make absolutely no sense if there was a designer involved. One minor example that affects me daily is routing the urethra right through the prostate gland. Knowing how the prostate gland behaves with age, the last thing you would do as a designer is run a narrow flexible tube through it.

@@bellezavudd mmm, I would disagree to be ignorant. rather it teaches of Christ and His will for us. Islam and Judaism are different but come from a similar theology of God with difference interpretations of Him, That speak of a propose for us, God's will for us. God is the Judge. Yes this is true I believe there is moral good that should be abided, but it should only be Him that judges. even still we do. However the bible doesn't give an allowance of cruelty, if fact it is the opposite. we are commanded to love even our enemies, like God loves us. my main point is that (even if it isn't real) that a story like this is needed in our age.

@@aaronbarreguin.4211 Christianity had its chance. Abrahamic Religion is a part of the reason we are in the state were in. Their myths and stories had more than 4000 years to make something. Yet failed. Instead of theists being the most amazing humans on the planet banding together and working miracles for the benifit of mankind we have a lot of ignorant and hateful theists in the world. Crazy cults, conspiracy spreaders, child rapists, oppressors of females, science deniers, and religious terrorist. Of course not all of them. But, unfortunately more than enough.

One thing that baffles me is the complete surrender of atheists to leftist politics. If we're critical thinkers about religion, we have to use the same standards about everything. Virtue signaling is not virtous.

I think that's mostly because of the complete surrender to religious nonsense by the right. So if you don't want insanity to rule the land you have to pick the other side. Leftist politics have some problems but nothing compared to what's going on on the other end.

Are you really turning your back on Jesus and walking away from your faith? Where are you walking to? My eyes were opened to the Bible when I got saved. You guys sound like I did before I got saved. I mean I have heard God's audible voice and the voice of the Holy Spirit inside of me. I've acknowledged the fact that Jesus went to the cross for me. I've seen God working in my life and the lives of my loved ones. I've been tempted and I've fallen flat on my face in failure but that was me not Jesus. Jesus always lifts me up in the spirit. I just repented from my selfish desires and put God first. Where are you walking to? Life is too short to live like someone who is lost again! This world is heading toward the revelation of the antichrist and the false prophet. Israel is preparing to build the third temple. It could be that the only reason Trump was President was to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, December 6, 2017.

@@physnoct I heard God’s audible voice before I got saved. I was commanded to help a handicapped student as an attendant at university. Before the end of the school year he got saved and a few weeks after that I got saved. I found Jesus after obeying that Word from above. After a couple years I got filled with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. When I heard the Holy Spirit He spoke in protection of my body when something tried to attach itself to my neck. The entity fled from me in complete panic. I just went back to sleep. Do you remember when Jesus was transfigured and Peter, James, and John heard the Father speak?

I was myself a believer for 20 years before checking the basis of my faith. Science shows clearly that we evolved from apes despite the Creationists arguments. This is in conflict with A&E thus all the bible falls apart.

Dating methods have been falsified and now we have proof of rapid fossilization through sediment deposits from a flood. God’s voice sounded very powerful. It penetrated my entire being with authority. The Father commanded me like a General speaking to a Private. I immediately knew Who was speaking. As a vet I responded, “Yes Lord!” From that moment I followed through and got the job as attendant. Nathan, the young freshman needed help getting around campus and that was my job. Like I said Nathan started hanging out with a Christian group and he got saved, born again. After a few weeks of intense discussion I got saved. That was the purpose of God speaking to me in an audible voice and I knew it on the inside. That was 40 years ago. I’ve been speaking in tongues for 38 years. The words are revealed in my spirit not my head. My spirit prays and my natural understanding is limited but my spirit is refreshed and anointed. Paul explained all of this in 1 Corinthians 12-14.

I checked the arguments and counter arguments from both sides. Science has all the evidences, in many fields and by many methods.
