Harpo was awesome very talented. I love him most of all. The Marx brothers were hilarious but when they performed solo Harpo was the best of the 3. There will never be another Marx brothers in our lifetime.

Pretty sure it said in his biography that he rigged his clarinet with a hidden lever, so he could play it normally ... and then by pressing the switch, bubbles would come out. He probably attached the bubble maker inside the end of the clarinet - with the lever directing the flow of air for each purpose - to make music or make bubbles.

I grew up watching Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello and the 3 Stooges, and I love all of them. However, I think the Marx Brothers beat all of those guys. : )

I don't know if "the Marx Brothers beat all those guys", but I agree 100+% about the rest. All I need to hear is "Who's on First", fill in the rest and I can have a great laugh. It's even better when someone else can reply to your roster for 1st, 2nd and 3rd bases with "Who's on First?"

Speaking seriously, of course, it is impossible to compare them all as they each have their unique strengths and talents. Having said that, The Freres Marx were awesome on a level all their own, and my personal favorites.

Important differences with the Marx Brothers - They really were brothers They worked on stage together for years polishing their act before going into the movies Their mother had them take music lessons with Harpo and Chico becoming quite accomplished

Harpo was 71 here and he still had it. Note that when he starts blowing the bubbles, the breeze in the studio is blowing the wrong way, so he walks behind Berle to the other side. Originally done on color videotape. Did it survive? This is a videotape, but it is in black and white.

I have read accounts about Harpo Marx which say he played six instruments. In their 13 movies, he is filmed playing four (harp, piano, clarinet, and penny whistle). While harp was his signature instrument (which he always played seriously), his "other" instruments were primarily for laughs - including this sequence with Merton Berle on clarinet.

How did this work? Was it a clarinet that could be played and blow bubbles, too? Or is it only a bubble maker, and Harpo's syncing to another player?

Yah for Harpo! He plays a clarinet in Coconuts and Monkey Business but not very well. He's been practicing and gotten better by 1959.
@josephosheavideos3992
@josephosheavideos3992 2 ай бұрын
I disagree that Harpo played clarinet poorly in either Coconuts or in Monkey Business. The recording equipment in the early "talkies" era was horrible, and both movies were released in the first few years after "The Jazz Singer." On top of that, what good equipment was available was in Hollywood, and the Marx Brothers made those two pictures in New York. I do agree with you though that, even with his busy schedule, Harpo found the time to practice all his instruments and did improve with age.
@huntingthekaiser6490
@huntingthekaiser6490 2 ай бұрын
@@josephosheavideos3992 Well, listen to the clunker notes and the thin sound. At the time he could play but the harp was his real instrument. He played the piano, too, but not in the same league as Chico. The first couple films were done in NYC but at a professional studio where a lot of others were being produced. The sound equipment wasn't to blame. According to his wife Susan's new book he practiced the clarinet while they were married, and I stand by my statement that he got better as time went on.

Milton Berle isn't exactly a favorite of mine, he sometimes looked physically abusive and even unrespectful but have to admit that otherwise he was a fine comedian and this time seemed thrilled to have the 1-derful and uniquely talented Harpo Marx as his guest, the act was so funny !!! 😂

Well, till the end when it all goes nuts :) 🪈🎹🎭🌷🌱 didn’t like Milton Berle and here is one example of why Harpo is the guest star, but guess who hogs the stage :P something Jack Benny, Dinah Shore, or Flip Wilson, etc. would never do!! 😾😮
