This is the opposite of my late mother, who didn't think anyone on television was quare. If you pointed out that John Inman's humour might be based on homosexuality, she'd say "you think everyone's gay". Larry Grayson was "just a bit effeminate". I swear if she'd caught two men in flagrante she'd say one was short sighted and had a bad aim. Reminds me of the Noel Coward story. The argument often isn't that you couldn't (but rather that it would be avoided, watered-down, self-censored, attacked...), nor that it's because back in the day that sort of thing was actually deplorable yet un-deplored, nor, finally, is the argument often made by evil goblins you've hallucinated that enjoy nothing buy human misery, persecution, and discrimination. The sensible, non-strawman argument is that there are people who either personally lack the nuance or (seemingly just like you!) assume the unwashed masses lack the nuance to tell the difference between satire and propaganda; the (somewhat overblown) shorthand is "all depiction is endorsement", which few espouse seriously but many seem to assume implicitly. As for who makes this argument... Often enough snarky, more or less embittered people who have a handle on what is going on. To give you an example you can pretend never happened by closing your eyes, plugging your ears, and shouting "Lalala, I can't hear you!": "The Germans" episode of "Fawlty Towers" got removed from streaming in 2020. This, of course, isn't an example of something new not springing into existence, but of knee-jerk retroactive cultural censorship. Was the episode an endorsement of terrible things? Who were the people "taking the satire seriously"? Was it the menacing-though-dim-witted "right-wingers" from the BBC perchance? I could try to go on and disentangle things further, but considering what you look like, what you sound like, and that you're in the KZbin comment section...
