Written by Nashville songwriter Curly Putman, “Green, Green Grass Of Home” tells the tale of a condemned prisoner who is longing to escape to the green, green grass of home. At the end of the song, it was revealed that the man is facing execution, and he will be coming home only to be buried.

I was with my father the first time I heard this version of this song. Two days ago, I learned that his father (my grandfather), who worked in Hollywood for many years, was on the set of 'How Green Was My Valley', about singing Welsh coal miners. Grandpa hung around the set just to listen to the Welsh choir that provided the soundtrack for the movie. 25 years later, my Dad brought this record home, and we listened to it over and over again. Indeed, Tom Jones is the son of a singing Welsh coal miner.

My dad was not much for music, but he loved this song. You see, his parents separated and he and 1/2 sister lived with their mother. They came home from school one day to find the house boarded up. My dad’s father took custody. He had to take them to work with him because of no sitter. The state stepped in and my Dad and my aunt were placed in an orphanage and were abused. I now understand why he loved this song 💕

🎵The old hometown looks the same As I step down from the train And there to meet me is my mama and papa Down the road I look and there runs Mary Hair of gold and lips like cherries It's good to touch the green, green grass of home Yes, they'll all come to meet me Arms reaching, smiling sweetly It's good to touch the green, green grass of home The old house is still standing Though the paint is cracked and dry And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on Down the lane, I walk with my sweet Mary Hair of gold and lips like cherries It's good to touch the green, green grass of home Then I awake and look around me At four grey walls that surround me And I realize, yes, I was only dreaming For there's a guard and there's a sad, old padre On and on, we'll walk at daybreak Again, I'll touch the green, green grass of home Yes, they'll all come to see me In the shade of that old oak tree As they lay me 'Neath the green, green grass of home.🎵🕊️
