Reminds me of my dad the first time I took my Asian girlfriend to meet my parents. He kept asking her questions about India even though she was born here in the UK & never been to India.

It's funny that generation after generation do the same thing. I'm sure it's the parents job to bring out the old photos of you when you were wearing shorts or a bygone embarrassing fashion. I used to have a massive quiff when I was a kid. Now I use a drill with a polishing pad. 😁

Maybe your dad thought that your gf would have visited the place where her parents were likely born and bought up in, and was interested etc? That would be the most logical explanation - nothing to do with being racist etc. Of course , that's the conclusion many people would happily jump to nowadays, isn't it 🙄

Harry Enfield was particularly popular in the first half of the nineties which is around when this dates from. (As an aside, Dominic is portrayed bey Ewan Bremner who went on to star in Trainspotting) He initially appeared on a Friday night chat show with sketches from a character callers Stavros, a Greek immigrant who ran a takeaway shop in the Kensington region of London and Loadsamoney, a wealthy man who had adopted a chance demeanour who constantly brags about his wealth and demeans the poor. Enfield was well known for greeting abrasive characters and it’s important to note that his comedy was often quite vicious. He has a long history of upsetting the establishment and is well known for his sustain of those who are careless when they wield authority. He is also scornful of the wealthy. Seeing this one sketch is quite one dimensional for you. It doesn’t let you see his intelligence and his sharp commentary. It’s also worth noting that a lot of the context will be lost as much of his work linked to current affairs.

This sketch first aired on TV in 1997, but I think it was included on a specially released compilation video in late '96. The show is called Harry Enfield and Chums.

I love this one of Harry Enfield. The lines are so good, so clever, and it is so typical of a certain old fashioned parent who keeps saying the wrong thing.

This show ran from about 1990 to 1998 thereabouts. To give some context it was not until 1967 that the UK Parliament introduced the Sexual Offences Act which DECRIMINALISED homosexual acts between men aged over 21. Although introduced in 1967 Scotland didn’t adopt this until 1980 and Northern Ireland, 1982. Criminalisation of homosexuality had been in place since 1533 under the reign of King Henry VIII. Further reforms in the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 lowered the age of consent between men from 21 to 18, then amended from 18 to 16 in 2001. The dad character in this sketch I would guess would have been a child of the 1950’s. This very probably looks ridiculous viewed through the 2022 lens but that is part of it’s genius, great comedy writing holds a mirror up at us and can reflect just how ridiculous an outlook on things we may sometimes have. And when this aired a lot of people I’d imagine would have still not had a great understanding and were still ignorant about AIDS. I am completely and utterly opposed to cancel culture in anyway shape or form, I think it is ludicrous in particular to scrub anything from the past, history is a great teacher. I think we can laugh at the dad and at the same time be a little sympathetic. The sketch and the character are not anti-gay, they are confronting something of which seemed foreign to them. Progress has been made, regrettably it took an enormous amount of time getting there.
