I’m thankful for the cast, the studio and filmmakers for this film. It was a bold step forward in 1982. It got widely panned for its subject matter but was a necessary step in our evolution. The integrity of everyone involved was so appreciated by me to this day.

I was friends with a married man, that I was really attracted to. We saw this movie together, as something special for us. We secretly held hands, the whole time as we watched this beautiful story.I thank God for this film in placing good people, as they were working through a difficult and compassionate situation. This film showed so many people, how to face the truth about being the person, they really were. So many people were afraid, as I and my friend. My friend and I, never continued our relationship because he was married and as we gained so much understanding from all sides. I loved this film and loved the music of "Making Love"

I saw this as a 14 year old Catholic school educated altar boy. This film spoke to me in so many different ways. The story the actors the script and the music moved me deeply. The only film which had such a profound effect on me was BLESS THE BEASTS & THE CHILDREN. Rewatching this at 51 years of age is just as powerful as it was as a teenager. Harry Michael & Kate really delivered in these roles. Kudos to all the pioneers of film making.

It's a beautiful film but not all of us find happiness . I still watch this on occasion and wonder what my life could have been if I had accepted myself . Harry Hamlin and Michael Ontkean were so convincing in this film . Kate Jackson was perfect . Roberta Flack was a brilliant choice of song for the soundtrack . This is definitely one of the most heart tugging films ever made . I cry each time I watch it .

Simply, choose an upbeat spirit of independence from those of the world, who choose to conform to the idea of "pairing up" with others. As I was slowly coming out as a freshman in college in 1982, a few of my close gay friends and myself went to see this movie. We loved it. From start to finish it was amazing. We were mesmerized. The love scenes between Harry and Michael were exquisite. Harry, Michael and Kate all did a phenomenal job. ❤️❤️❤️

What is the difference between "picking someone up in a bar" if you're straight or gay? I don't think there is one. Mr. Hamlin is so extremely well-spoken and thoughtful in this interview.

Before I came out I read the book and it changed my life it was the first time I have ever read a gay story. Then I seen the movie and it was overwhelming. Today I am married 15 years to my husband and we adopted a beautiful baby at 18 months old who is now 14. How times have changed from that movie.

They did a phenomenal job with "Making Love". I understood that all 3 main actors took a hit in their careers because of it but they should all be proud of the end product because it opened up so many eyes as to what gay people go through daily (even today). The subject matter was controversial (absurd in today's standards but that's life) at the time but it was done beautifully. Kudo's to Harry Hamlin, Kate Jackson and Michael Ontkean.

This movie comes the closest to what it was like to be a gay man at the time who lived a straight existence and finally took the plunge to explore his true side. I still like watching it today as it brings back so many memories.

I was eleven years old and terrified to say or do anything that would telegraph my sexuality. I wanted to see the movie because I read in a magazine what it was about. I did see it about five years later on VHS. It gave me hope that I could grow up, move to California, find a career and love. I did. I'm grateful for this movie for giving me that hope.

"Making Love" was a grrat movie. Original Broke Back Mountain. Must see movie. 3 main actor (Kate, Michael, Harry) all did a wonderful job.

Great interview. Most interviews from that time would have gone more salacious and voyeuristic. “What was it like kissing a man? Did you like it? Were you concerned it would turn you homosexual?” “Most people find homosexuality to be morally objectionable. What do you say to those people?” This interviewer asked much better questions, more interested in the acting and film making process. Very respectful. I’m glad to see it.

the movie was focused on michael ontkean's character's issues. this was made before people expected everything to have their personal social agenda's message in them. they made stories, they weren't trying to brainwash anyone or please sensitivity readers or diversity boards. maybe you should make a movie from the wife's point of view, if it's that distressing for you.

Mr. Hamlin has nothing to apologize for choosing to take on this role. I'd love to know the names that were too afraid. Hamlin was fantastic. I "know" his character & most have even tougher veneers/& even higher images of themselves. If you hv sense, you don't fan their egos, ignore them. Hamlin's character showed a little more decency with courting Onktean. As he suggests, vulnerability? Maybe it was just "the chase"/ to crack this straight, very curious man that kept him interested. And Onktean is very handsome & his character, very likeable. Well played by all. And "no" to Mr. Interviw man: With mature, loving people, the Onktean- Jackson marriage "split" wasn't portrayed as too easy or too pretty. I have seen this situation several times without ANY acrimony. Most anger came from third party friends & family around the couple. It was refreshing to see reality played out , even if "critics", (& what qualifies ANYONE as a critic?),... even if critics thought it was too easy. It happened back then, (pardon me, WAY back then, pffft), as it does now. If the leads did forrfeit bigger future theatrical roles, that's really lousy. Especially considering the % of gays in the industry. They are all fine actors and should be proud to have "Making Love" on their resumes'.

He was pretty sexy. I remember seeing Making Love with my partner when it came out. I was about 16 years old and this was the first movie that gave me hope for finding love. Prior to Making Love most movies with gay themes were either portraying gay men as diseased or psychopath murderers or miserable queens. The only other movie with positive gay character prior might be Cabaret. I commend the actors for this movie, during the homophobia of the early 80s doing a "gay" movie could ruin a career. Kate was also very good in her role. The movie was honest to the time period. I connect this movie to falling in love with my first husband who sadly passed away when I was only 25 though we had about 10 years together.

His observations are shallow, external. There doesn’t seem to be an inner life which a great actor like Timothy Hutton .He took this roe because he desired to be a working actor. It wasn’t his cup of tea because his role mirrors his life in many ways . He’s not a complex person or he is and has made a choice to show only one side. If this is the case he’s a better actor in real I’ve than when he’s in front of a camera. He’s an actor and I think slipping into being another person is still difficult Frank one.

....possibly (in my opinion), was the Movie was bombing, and Media outlets didn't want to get wrapped up in the controversy of the flick's subject matter...Mind you, AIDS was becoming much more talked about (negatively), and that added to the film's failure(s).....

@@RBS_ Thank you. I disagree on your point concerning AIDS. I believe this movie came out around February 1982. AIDS didn't become headline news until 1983. I remember as I was there.
