If you don't like this version, listen to one that you can relate to. As a song it's actually very good. Even Sinatra sang it.

Funny I had this tune in my head this morning, remembering this original 78RPM record of my childhood. I didn't think it would be possible to find it, but here it is! Wonderful stuff. As a kid in the 50s and 60s I knew all the words. I don't regard it as racist... I think it's just fun. Racism doesn't mean anything in my world, only that people who are offended have their own inner work to do. I had the 78RPM record until about 12 years ago when I left it in Spain along with nearly everything else I owned. Thanks Randy for uploading this gem to youtube.

My Dad had this on a 45! My brothers and I listened to it over and over. We knew it was funny! And, we had Japanese cousins....so quit the racist crap! Also keep in mind that this song was only a few years after the end of WWII, so the nation was healing from Pearl Harbor...this fun song probably helped them move on from the pain. So many lost in such a violent struggle. We just loved, "Hey Joe, what'ya know, what are a-cookin' in Tokyo...that's just plain old funny stuff. Fun rhyming as well!!! More folks need to learn to look through others eyes better. Its called empathy. And that is wisdom. EnJoy!!! Ha-dee-ho-ha-HA!!!!

One suspects this was a relic (1953) held over from the racism of WWII, and that those listening to this comedy record were remembering Pearl Harbor, Guam, Bataan, Iwo Jima, Fat Man, Little Boy, and the USS Missouri. In their minds it was OK to hold onto their comfort of racism.

pps - the song was inspired by the rhythmic walking of a child's mechanical pig, who uttered repeatedly the first two notes of the melody as it walked. thus, how brilliant and profound of a song is it anyway, huh? yet, amazingly popular throughout the decades - and not just in the USA!!! go figure!
