Without Him Breath control. I remember that Harry had it to burn. I once timed one of his phrases to 18 seconds, (same as Sinatra on SOLILOQUY from Carousel). You're not really aware he's doing it. 'Artless.' And I recall Nancy Sinatra once sharing an anecdote -- back stage one time with Harry as he lectured her on how she should practice extend phrases . . . like this one, a 1971 live TV performance of WITHOUT HER. 13 seconds beginning at the 57 second mark through to 1:09 (". . . spend another day (breath) without her.") Other than Sinatra no other artist could do this so 'effortlessly.'

I spend the night in a chair thinking she'll be there But she never comes And then I wake up and wipe the sleep from my eyes And I rise to face another day Without her Doo doo, doo doo doo, doo doo doo It's just no good anymore when you walk through the door Of an empty room And you go inside and set a table for one, it's no fun When you spend a day Without her Doo doo, doo doo doo, doo doo doo We burst the pretty balloon, took us to the moon It's such a beautiful thing But it's ended now And it sounds like a lie If I said I'd rather die, than live without her Doo doo, doo doo doo, doo doo doo Love is a beautiful thing when it knows how to swing And it grooves like a clock But the hands on the clock tell the lovers to part And it's breaking my heart To have to spend another day without her Doo doo, doo doo doo, doo doo doo I spend the night in a chair thinking she'll be there But she never comes And then I wake up and wipe the sleep from my eyes And I rise to face another day Without her Doo doo, doo doo doo Can't go on without her Doo doo, doo doo doo There's no song without her

I first heard Harry in 1973, graduation night. The radio station played the complete album of "Land of Point" (they used to do that back then...). He had me there. Then I heard NilssonSchmilsson and it was the best record I'd heard. What a voice and lyrics. It was all so poetic. I ended up living in the next town over from where he lived at the end of his life--Yorba Linda, CA. My kids grew up on him and knew the lyrics!

I remember watching this broadcast in 1971. I was 10 years old. We loved Harry Nilsson. The BBC "In Concert" series was incredible. But this felt strange to me, as he didn't want an audience. So he faked one and performed alone. It felt strangely sterile and sad at the time. Well, to me, that is. I was used to the artists chatting/joking shyly to the tiny, young studio audience. But he was remarkable. As this performance attests. What a generation of singer songwriters.!!

@teamcrumb6 жыл бұрын
Harry had singing lessons and also learnt to yodel, but his falsetto is a gift from the star maker oh yes indeed. so i guess the technique is to be Harry Nilsson. Except sadly, of course, there's only one Harry Nilsson.
@carladiciaccio89554 жыл бұрын
teamcrumb .....Pardon me, but when did Harry have singing lessons? When Harry was 16 living with an uncle in Calif, his uncle taught him some singing techniques while he was repairing cars in his gas station garage. Harry would pump gas. I believe a lot came naturally and he learned from others.
