Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (GC) - Retro Review

Released in 2002 for the PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was a tie-in for the movie of the same title. A lot of movie tie-in games exist just to cash in on the video game market - is this one of the good ones?

Wolfy4meh same here my first PS2 game actually and it may not me great but at no point did I ever not want to finish it. It has flaws sure but it had me hooked all the way and back then that's all I could ever ask for.

With hogwarts legacy coming out soon I hope they bring some of the same things we saw in the games like the ability to fly on the broom stick whenever you wish

Just got this game since it was kinda cheap and it's rare to find GameCube games where I am, and I'm glad to see a review that gives some detail into seeing if it was worth it, and as far as I can see from your review it seems I spent my money wisely. Great review and keep up these great videos.

My childhood. Also, since it wasn't mentioned, the Gameboy Color version is also different, it's a pretty darn good RPG and sticks to the story in the books better than any of the console versions.

I have more positive feelings about the stealth sections, first off your required to do them only 4 times (in the Gamecube and Xbox versions) in the entire game, second even though the camera is top-down in these sections, you can move the C Stick to rotate it to get one prefect or even two in view, which does make the wall sneak move a bit useless. The ladder of which makes it easier to learn their walking pattern and strategize a way around them. Heck in the Library Annex you can just run straight through it since the prefects just walk up and down the same isle. Now they still aren't one of the most fun things about the game but they're not that bad...

There’s 2 major differences that I noticed between the GC/Xbox version vs the ps2 version. In the GC/Xbox version, when you fly around outside, you can fly through rings and that gets you beans (I’m not sure if that’s good or not) that’s a feature that’s not in the ps2 version. In the ps2 version, you can run anywhere on the grounds but in the GC/Xbox versions you can’t. Some other smaller differences that I’ve also noticed some dialogue is different. Like when you’re in the restricted section of the library, once in awhile, harry will say “how on earth do I get out of here” on the GC/Xbox versions, I’ve never heard him say that on the ps2 version. On the ps2 version, you have to win 2 duels before you leave the restricted section of the library, on the GC/Xbox version, you only have to win one duel. The loading screens are different from the PS2 version and the GC/Xbox versions. There’s more prefects in the PS2 version than the GC/Xbox version. I could probably make a 10 page list of little things that’s different between the GC/Xbox versions to the PS2 versions.

Ive always been watching gameplay videos to see whats different if You still remember some id love to hear it. I noticed that the game is def running at a better fps and the graphics and some of the charecters look slightly diffrent model wise like ron. And also noticed the end snake fight is diffrent. One thing I will give the game cube version is when u pick up the sword. its actually the full sword but in the ps2 version its very small and dinky

Cari Walker no he's righf you cant walk around ground theres just teleports take u to hagrids hutt, quidditch etc but it was more fun walking or running there lol also hufflepuff have purple robes some reason

Ok let's compare the ps2 version looks better they are the same game and there are prefects outside and in the grand staircase in the ps2 version and not in the gamecube which makes the ps2 so much more fun and stressful and the gamecube one easy though I've played both versions and I think gamecube is my favourite

Ive also played the pc version of sorcerer stone. Got sealed in a octagonal room, Couldn't jump across the yellow walls, didn't know how to get out, trying casting spells and nothing happens.

Don’t worry, you weren’t missing out on much. This game was a tedious pain in the ass. Not to mention all the stealth sequences caused me severe PTSD. I know I’m 3 years late but whatever.

@@a1kev I played it again and hated the stealth section in the library (where I have to sneak into the restricted section, grab what I need, then sneak back out of the restricted section!) At least I finished Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban and the goblet of Fire on GameCube. Then my memory card got corrupted.

PhantomShadow yep! After I completed that section and saw the rest Ginny’s chores I had to do I said nope I’m done with this shit lol. But yeah that’s cool! I have those games too but I don’t think I ever completed them due to the limited space on ps2 memory cards lmao. I think the only Harry Potter games I completed were, order of the Phoenix and half blood prince.

I absolutely loved this game. I had the ps2 version and the only problem I had with it was that since it was a blue disc, it scratched easily and stopped working. and because of that I never beat the game. think I'll pick up the GC version :)

I prefer the PS2 version, it was a good game had fun playing but I wish they detailed their cut scenes better to properly follow the film and book like they did in the PS1 and PC version

Man I hated the stealth sections. I was actually glad that they improved a lot in next game in the entry of Harry Potter and Philosopher Stone. But I still loved the game! I played the PC and PS2 versions first then after some years got to play the Xbox version and I always thought that the Xbox version was the best and the little changes it had in it were better but I gotta say even though the Xbox and GC version looked very crisp and awesome, the PS2 version was better since it gave much more exploration and the camera was way better in it then the Xbox and GC versions.

There is another difference between the GC and PS2 version. In the PS2 version, in some stealth mission there were prefects in the entry hall, there were none in the GC version. And man, it was so hard sometimes to sneak past them in the entry hall, I think there were 3 prefects

Something I'm curious about regarding the broom-flying outdoor sections on PS2 is is there any reason to actually land anywhere, or is that a bit overrated? Like are there any collectibles/NPCs out there? Gah, just give me the alternate timeline where Hogwarts Legacy is out and I don't have to get back to this antiquated (albeit great) game.

I played the PS2 version as a kid and wanted to revisit the game but the PS2 emu doesn't play this so I got it for GameCube instead. I thought it was the same game exactly until I got to the grounds and it just skipped the long run around the castle grounds for some reason. But then I went into the castle and oh boy. THE UNDODGEABLE GHOSTS COMING OUT THE WALLS CONSTANTLY. How did anyone play this?

Just been playing it for a bit, overall I didn't like it. Camera is awful, the game texture doesn't look nice at all. You can tell by the cuttings of the grounds. Making the game look very low quality. You couldn't move freely around the grounds. I felt the movement while playing the game was a bit bad. Especially doing the 1st lesson of Flying, difficult to steer. To me anyway, been just using the keyboard. Also while playing, the prefects were so easy to get past. If you cast flipendo they don't always notice a thing. Even if you just simply walk in front of them move away their spell doesn't work.

Conclusion, Not impressed with the game, if you want to just play the game not minding these mistakes then play it. But just bare in mind with just a standard computer I'm sure you can play this game with no problem at all. Due to the quality and the small cut scenes in the grounds. I'm using my own gaming computer with a standard graphics card. Can't play this on pcsx2 because of my graphics card, play this smoothly with Dolphin 5.0 no problem at all.
