My late wife and I both read and thoroughly enjoyed the books. Attending the movies when they came out was an extra-special treat (They did SUCH an amazing/respectful job on them!)! Sadly, she passed-away before the final book (then movies) came out. I read it aloud as-if she were there beside me, and when I finally got to see the movies, I bought two tickets (Gave one to a family behind me, as a way of saying 'Thank you!' to her generous spirit). These bring back so many fond memories, yet also fill me with a deep sense of loss at her being gone. At least folks can still read/watch this Series and become as enthralled with them, too! :-)

When you say Hermione is the smart one I want to point out that someone in the filmmaking process like Hermione more than Ron. In the books she was very "book smart" but, for instance she knew that devil snare didn't like light but forgot that she could cast a spell to make light in the heat of the moment and had to be reminded by Harry. At other times in the franchise she is given lines that Ron said in the books, even though it made more sense that Ron would know what was said because he was raised in the magic world well Hermione and Harry were not. This always confused me. The movies are fun but the books are amazing, and the three protagonists are much more balanced in the books.

When it comes to Quidditch it's whoever catches the golden snitch and the game, and whoever catches it gets 150 points however your team could still lose so say if you had zero points and your enemy team had say 160 you catch the snitch you only get 150 so you would lose by 10 points. When it comes to scoring goals you can score on either side.
@CarlosAlexDanger
@CarlosAlexDanger 11 ай бұрын
But your total points for the season matter just as much as your wins. So it may be worth it to cut your losses and only lose by 10
@Kylopod
@Kylopod 10 ай бұрын
Yes. It’s a design flaw in the game, because it reduces the incentive for trying to score goals. I imagine that it would cause teams to play a mostly defensive strategy, focused on preventing the other team from scoring rather than trying to score themselves, and that would lead to less scoring overall. In the books it’s explained that teams are evaluated based on number of goals scored rather than number of games won, thus evening out this discrepancy. But it means you’d have to play a lot of games before seeing the value in scoring goals. What’s interesting to me is that in the real world, a form of quidditch has been developed (without the flying and magic of course), and I’d be curious to know how well it functions compared to standard sports like football or basketball.
@Senkoau
@Senkoau 8 ай бұрын
@@Kylopod I think part of the issue is we only see the Hogwarts games while Harry's there and obviously something has changed massively in broom design during that period. The Nimbus 1,000 (Predecessor to Harry's broom) could reach a top speed of 100 mph, the Nimbus 2,000 is unknown but said to be fastest at the time of its release meaning its faster than the 1,000 and the Nimbus 2,001 (What Malfoy bought his way onto the team with in Harry's second year) was said to be faster again and then we get the Firebolt which Harry gets in his third year and its confirmed speed is 150 mph. That means over the course of four years (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993) the brooms used in Quidditch increased their top speed by 50 mph and we don't see anything about Golden Snitch's or other equipment being similarly upgraded. We know the longest match in history lasted 3 months and none of the games in the series even the world cup don't last more than one eavening yet for the world cup wizards are bringing tents and camping to watch it. So my personal theory is that part of the reason quidditch has issues is that in the time period we're watching it the players are getting a massive upgrade in how fast they can move but the snitch isn't. So the game has changed from seekers having to spot and anticipate the snitch's movements to end the game meaning the goals scored play a large part of the final score since a game can last day's to being able to overtake and catch it in a direct chase. So the games are ending far quicker than they used too but the rules and equipment outside of the brooms aren't being upgraded to deal with this. To put it in real world terms they seem to be going from racing with Model T cards (top speed 35 mph) to racing with F1 cars (230+ mph) while being judged on how long it takes them to complete a set number of laps of the track.
@SonOfIzalith

Ok so that was an awesome theory/explanation, did you come up with it yourself ? Never thought about that but it makes sense @@Senkoau
@Senkoau
@Senkoau 6 ай бұрын
@@SonOfIzalithMy theory based on the canon speeds of Harry's brooms and a few other ones we know about. For example we know the first mass produced racing broom the cleansweep one was in 1926 and by 1927 every British quidditch team was using it. We also know the silver arrow was the predecessor to the cleansweep one reaching speeds of seventy mph and eventually being replaced by the cleansweep because they couldn't make enough silver arrows to meet demand. Meaning racing brooms have only been officially produced for about sixty five years and went from around seventy mph (silver arrow) to 100 mph (Nimbus 1,000) in that time period then as I said in Harry's first four years at school their top speed jumped by 50 mph to 150 mph an increase nearly equal to the probable top speed of the first racing broom and 20 mph more than the increase over the previous 65 years combined. So my theory that something changed in 1990/1991 that saw a huge jump in broom speed like in real life we had a huge jump in computing power when going from vacumn tubes to transistors. Meanwhile the rest of quidditch hasn't kept up with these speed increases by the seekers. If we assume the Nimbus 1,000 wasn't part of this jump then it could be say 100 mph vs a snitch at 105 mph, if it is part of the jump then it could be 100 mph vs a snitch at 95 mph. If the broom before the Nimbus could only reach 90 - 92 mph then you can't catch it in a direct chase and thus longer games people are still expecting.

The last scene with the Train scene, the reason why Harry's eyes look all puffy like he's been crying is because they tried having him wear green contacts cuz in the book the character has green eyes like his mother. Unfortunately he had a really bad allergic reaction to it and that was actually the first scene that they filmed for the movie. And you'll notice that Hermione Granger had buck teeth in that scene is the only time Emma Watson wore the fake teeth but they just did not work out so well and so they had them removed.

They could’ve made his eyes green with CGI like Johnny Depp in Alice In Wonderland but maybe they didn’t have the capacity at the time
@VonOutlaw
@VonOutlaw 11 ай бұрын
@MariCruzLilMonsta correct they could have but it would not have looked anywhere near like Johnny Depp's, remember now the first movie came out in 2001. Johnny Depp's movie came out in 2010 the CGI can't be really compared they look completely different after that much time has passed improvements were made. Now when it's used like in Johnny Depp's case it looks amazing, but if we tried that in 2001 and wouldn't look so well, look at the scar that they put on the baby that was CGI. So you are correct they would have been able to do it back in 2001 it just would not have looked as good and so I think that's why they chose not to. On top of that most of the budget went in towards the Quidditch and fluffy

Actually, "Merry Christmas" is pretty standard in the UK, 'Happy Christmas' not so much.
@chris...9497
@chris...9497 7 ай бұрын
'Merry' originally had a different connotation than it does in the US. For one, 'happy' is a feeling, but 'merry' is a behavior. If you paid attention to the Charles Dickens story "A Christmas Carol", Scrooge's overworked and underpaid clerk apologizes for coming into work a few minutes late after Scrooge begrudgingly allowed him a day off for the holiday. Because the previous day he had overdone the festivities a bit, he says "I was making rather merry yesterday, sir." 'Merry' was a behavior that often involved drinking and loosening up. So, when you wish someone 'Merry Christmas', you are telling them you hope they enjoy themselves; 'Happy Christmas' means you hope their Christmas will be pleasant.

While "Merry Christmas" is more popular in America now and Happy is popular in the UK, Merry Christmas actually originated in England hundreds of years ago (1500's I think) and was popularized by Charles Dickens in A Christmas Carol. Queen Elizabeth II apparently preferred using Happy Christmas over Merry in her Christmas messages to the public and it became the most common form in the UK. Though I've seen Brits who say Merry is actually more common now.

The latter phrase however, is not supposed to be uttered until 12 midnight on New Years Eve. Both these things are probably due to the Hogmanay celebrations in Scotland being such a big thing.

This isn't addressed anywhere in the series but half of all of Hermione's best lines are supposed to be done by Ron. The guy who did the adaptation of the script went way overboard with his love for Hermione and gave her pretty much all of Ron's helpful moments. It becomes more apparent as the movies go on that he isn't given any real heroic moments which doesn't make a lot of sense that he would be part of trio and have nothing to add to it for the most part. Even as the "heart" of the group he doesn't get a lot of implementation throughout the movies. First, Ron is the one with all the knowledge of the Wizarding World at large. She is knowledgeable but only about things written in books. She knows nothing about anything she's not being taught in class or reading from the library. Second, Ron is supposed to be constantly defending Hermione and giving her the self confidence she needs to succeed. Even in the pit of vines she's supposed to be freaking out till Ron calms her down. She is the one with the knowledge to get them out but she isn't supposed to be this much of a rock. Ron is her rock.

The philosopher's stone was one of two traditional goals of alchemy. As explained in the movie, this was supposed to confer immortality on the possessor. (The other goal was the transmutation of base substances into gold.) So the original title, Philosopher's Stone, was perfectly logical to anyone who knows about alchemy. But the US publisher figured that no one (or at least, no kids) in the US would recognize that reference and changed the title to Sorcerer's Stone. I have to agree that it would be a rare kid in the US who would know what a philosopher's stone is, but I'm not sure that isn't just as true of British kids. Well, probably not now, but before the book became popular. On the other hand, for the first book before anyone knew what Harry Potter was all about the name change probably made sense from a marketing standpoint as it clearly indicates the magical nature of the world in the book. Philosopher's Stone wouldn't have done that even for those who recognized the alchemical term. Alchemy is widely considered a pseudo science these days. That's a fair assessment in that a lot of alchemists were clearly charlatans, claiming to have knowledge of already existing means to achieve either the philosopher's stone or the transmutation of base materials into gold as a way to bilk money out of gullible rich people. But there were others who did a lot of real science while sincerely seeking one or both of these goals. Modern chemistry is very much indebted to alchemy for its foundations both in chemical knowledge and investigative techniques.

The book/film is called the Philosopher's Stone literally everywhere but in the US. It was changed by the US publisher, Scholastic, and J.K. Rowling because they thought American children wouldn't want to read a book with "philosopher" in the title, since it commonly refers to a scholar of philosophy rather than an alchemist or a wizard. Rowling has since said that she regrets having granted permission for the title change, but as a new author she wasn't in a strong enough position to fight it at the time (they even asked her to use the initials J.K. instead of her first name Joanne because apparently teenage boys would not want to read a book written by a woman). The Philosopher's Stone is an actual real-life legend; an alchemical substance of legend capable of turning base metals such as mercury into gold or silver. It is also called the elixir of life, used for achieving immortality. Additionally, Nicolas Flamel was a real person, an (alleged) alchemist believed to have created the stone. Fun fact: Each scene where the stone is mentioned in the films had to be shot twice, with "philosopher's" or "sorcerer's". The houses and what they represent: Gryffindor - Bravery, chivalry, honor, helping others, determination, recklessness, self-righteousness, short tempered and a desire to always be the hero. Someone who stands up for the little guy, challenges authority and has a tendency to act first & think later. Hufflepuff - Hard work, patience, loyalty, modesty, dedication, kindness and fairness. Someone who has a strong moral compass, is usually accepting of everyone and rarely starts arguments. (I am a proud Hufflepuff!) Ravenclaw - Intelligence, wisdom, knowledge, creativity, originality and wit. Someone who is academically motivated, logical, curious, eccentric, and accepting of people & things that others would consider 'weird'. Slytherin - Ambition, cleverness, cunningness, resourcefulness, pride and self-preservation. Someone who is always one step ahead, has a dark sense of humour, thinks reputation is important, doesn’t let anyone (or almost anyone) see their soft side and is possibly destined for greatness. While a lot of dark witches and wizards have been in Slytherin, not all of them are bad. I suggest taking the Sorting Hat Quiz on wizardingworld.com (formerly Pottermore). The house colours represent the four elements: Gryffindor is red and gold (Fire), Slytherin is green and silver (Water), Hufflepuff is yellow and black (Earth-wheat and soil) and Ravenclaw is blue and bronze - (Air-sky and eagle feathers). Prof. McGonagall (Transfiguration) is head of Gryffindor. An M.G. McGonagall won best seeker in 1971 but it cannot have been Minerva as she was already a teacher at Hogwarts by 1910. Prof. Snape (Potions) is head of Slytherin, Prof. Sprout (Herbology) is head of Hufflepuff and Prof. Flitwick (Charms-Wingardium Leviosa) is head of Ravenclaw. The way Qudditch works is that the seeker who catches the Golden Snitch earns the team 150 points and ends the game. But the team with the most points overall wins, so catching the snitch alone doesn't guarantee a win. Interesting fact: Daniel Radcliffe, who's eyes are blue, was initially meant to wear green contact lenses to match Harry's eye colour as well as his mother's, but the lenses gave him an allergic reaction so after consultation with Rowling, it was agreed that Harry could have blue eyes. However, he does have them in the last scene which was actually the first one that was filmed, and his green eyes are clearly visible in close-ups. In contrast, Ron has blue eyes in the book but Rupert Grint has green eyes. Emma Watson also wore fake buck teeth but she couldn't talk clearly with them. This is something that is never explained in the films so it's not really a spoiler, but Harry HAS to stay with the Dursleys because when Lily sacrificed herself she invoked an ancient and powerful spell in which her blood serves as protection for Harry against Voldemort. As her sister, Petunia, is her closest living blood relative, Harry is protected as long as he stays where she stays until the age of 17. Mirror of Erised = Desire backwards.

Hufflepuff are mainly yellow (you will see a Quiditch match with them later). Snape is the head of Slytherin house: note not all Slytherins are bad. You'll see Voldemort as a normal looking person, later in the series but you will also see him further distorted due to some dark magic he insists on performing: more of this in later films.

Most Americans believe it's just good manners to wish the best to people regardless of terms used. And most Americans with even the slightest enlightened sensibility are happy to use whatever is the most appropriate term or context for the recipient of such good wishes. Not everyone celebrates Christmas, not everyone is Christian. Well-wishing is shared by Christain and non-Christian alike. And the reality is that the winter solstice is a period where an abundance of religions celebrate a major holiday. I personally find it far more Christian to wish others well regardless of what religion they practice. Jesus is portrayed as inclusive; but modern day political christians use their professed religious label in a very domineering and possessive way that doesn't fit with the biblical Jesus. They aren't practicing religion, they're practicing politics. The Pharisees tried to trip Jesus up at one point, asking him a political question about money and taxation, brandishing a coin with the Caesar's image on it. Jesus said 'Render to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." I think Jesus would be disgusted with the politicizing of his ministry and message. Kindness and consideration is being inclusive. Using words to disinclude 'nonmembers' is not Christian. Wishing others a 'Happy Holidays' is NOT being unChristian in the least. Jesus never said kindness or consideration had to be earned; the parable of the Good Samaritan is proof of that. I apologize for my countrymen. I have found ignorance and small-mindedness occurs in all countries, all cultures, all belief systems. Like the poor, we will have them with us always.

5:02 the reason McGonagall is into Quidditch is because she’s the head of Gryffindor and all the heads want their house to win the quidditch cup and if I remember right Slytherin beat Gryffindor for many years so McGonagall wanted to win. 5:55 there’s no time limit to Quidditch they’ve had games in their world that lasted months. 7:08 there are rules to quidditch but the ref didn’t seem to call stuff. The points can keep going up until someone catches the snitch but catching the snitch doesn’t mean you’ll win. The other team could have 900 and your team have 200 and catch the snitch and not win. 35:26 Snape would give points to his house and take from others and the other house teachers would try to balance that out. 37:39 if you read the book you’ll find out more about Dudley and the tail. It’s pretty funny.

I've known about Nicolas Flamel and the philosopher's stone since probably 1995 which is 2 years before the first Harry Potter book came out. And in the Wizarding World, adulthood is reached at age 17, not 18 or 21. This occurs in the final year at Hogwarts. Technically, you don't have to attend Hogwarts once you reach 17, and you'd be 17 by the day you enter the final year. But most students do finish.

Great reaction guys! 😍 Very very excited for the rest it only gets darker and darker and much more complicated every movie so it's a ride buckle up!😍👌🏻And all the kids AND the teachers would get better and more involved as you go on so you'll love it👌🏻 The first movie is a lot like an introduction yeah and world building, they say the first two but I disagree! The next one is very VERY important plot wise although they're still very young our main Cs but it HAS important info about the main plot! 👌🏻 BTW You should do the wizarding world test to know your houses for real! I'm a Gryffindor! 5:30 Gryffindor is red and gold actually, Ravenclaw is blue and rose gold/platinum, Slytherin is green and silver and Hufflepuff is yellow and black. According to the book that is.👌🏻 5:54 Nope, actually there isn't a time limit! The game only ends when the snitch is caught👌🏻 The longest Quidditch match lasted for 3 months! The players kept taking turns to sleep and eat LOL🤣 6:47 Yes, you're right, you can't score from the opposite side. 11:52 It's a family heirloom, been passed down in his dad's family from father to son. Dumbledore send it! James Potter lent it to him because Dumbledore wanted to inspect it and he didn't get to return in since James died so he sent it to Harry instead! 28:34 He can't, first of all he'll land on a wrong square and it's gonna count as a wrong move, second, he literally IS the piece if he managed to get out of the board the game would stop. Actually in the book he wasn't even riding anything so he did get hit on the head but it was minor and he woke up in a few.👌🏻 Ron was BRILLIANT at that match! This set was transfigured and enchanted by McGonagall herself! It was pretty hard to win. 32:31 It wasn't easy at all for an 11 year old! and keep in mind that Voldemort was the one who's very very weak at this point he can do no more right now.👌🏻 34:05 Well yeah! But it's not that simple he just simplified it for little Harry here. You see when his mom sacrificed her self out of love for her son she shielded him with a very powerful and ancient protective magic that Voldemort never saw coming so when he tried cursing Harry it turned on him because of her protection and he became what you saw and his powers got destroyed. So it IS her love that protected him yes.❤ This protective magic runs in Harry's blood and it would protect him as long as he's a kid still so it's "supposed to" wash off when he's an adult and you become an adult in the wizarding world when you turn 17 "You should remember this stuff for later" It also shields him only against Voldemort so Quirrell share his body with Voldemort got affected by it but Voldemort fled his body so only Quirrell died there.👌🏻 38:15 Let her celebrate! Slytherin been wining the house cub AND the quidditch cub for the past 6 years before Harry came to school!😂💔 Wood the captain and McGonagall the head of the house was ecstatic with how good of a seeker Harry was! 😂❤ 39:20 Well all we can tell you for now is exactly what Voldemort said. He was just like a parasite so he lived in this state you saw him escape in, or he shared the body of another being and that was animals till he met Quirrell over the summer and shared his body. First he made Quirrell brake into the bank to steal the stone if you remember and then when he found that it was moved he went with Quirrell to Hogwarts because he knew like Hagrid told Harry at the beginning that there's no safer place to keep things than Gringotts Bank except for Hogwarts! So he knew the stone must've been moved there because it was no secret that Nicolas Flamel and Dumbledore were friends. 👌🏻 42:50 Yes you're right it was Ron who said it. And yes it's just statistically the most that brought dark wizards is Slytherin and the least is Hufflepuff.👌🏻 But every house has it's good and bad you know. 43:47 They won't tell you bluntly so here it is! You're absolutely right! Snape is a Slytherin, McGonagall is a Gryffindor as well as Dumbledore and Hagrid!

There is no time limit in Quidditch. A game can go on for days. The game can only end when a seeker finds and catches the snitch. You don't necessarily win when you catch the snitch. Yes, the snitch is 150 points and the game does end when the snitch is caught. But the team that catches the snitch can loose the game if the opposing team had already gained far more points prior to the snitch being caught. So it's important to score as many points as possible with the Quaffle and hoops before any seeker of any team catches the snitch causing the game to end. BTW, did you know that people became such a massive fan of the fictional sport of Quidditch that college students made it into a real world international sport that are played in real colleges all over the world. Players play with broomstick between their legs and the snitch is a person dressed in gold with a handkerchief tucked into his or her's belt running around all over the place. The seeker has to catch the person playing as the snitch by grabbing onto the handkerchief and pulling it off the snitch's body. You can do a KZbin search and view a few matches played in different countries. I have seen 2 or 3 Quidditch matches in person back in the day. Tons of fun. If you ever want to know how Quidditch is played and it's fictional history the author of Harry Potter, JK Rowling also wrote other books for charities. One of them is called Quidditch Through the Ages and it is written as if it were one of Harry Potter's text books. 🧹📚

Quidditch is definitely NOT the first to 150. Goals are worth 10 and the Snitch is worth 150 and the game only ends once the Snitch is caught. The team with the most points after the Snitch is caught wins. The team that catches the Snitch can still lose is the other team scored enough goals.

the winning team depends on which team has the most points, catching the snitch does two things 1 it gives the team that catches it 150 points and 2 it ends the game. its entirely possible that the team that catches it loses because the other team simply has too many points, and the match goes on until the snitch is cought.

There is a lot of material in the book the movie producers just did not have the time to include in the movies. This first film is probably the closest to completely adapting the book upon which it was based and even then was unable to include everything, including the explanation for how Voldemart became attached to Quirrel (explained in depth in the book). And as you can imagine, as each successive book became longer and more detailed, more and more of those details were left out of the movies. Truthfully, the film series should have started to be split into parts 1 and 2 for each book beginning with number 4 - The Goblet of Fire. That fourth book was truly the first to be double the length of the books that came before. Instead the movie producers tried to keep one film per book until it came to Deathly Hallows (Book 7) and as a result left some very important information the audience could use to better understand certain plot points out of the films. Were they to remake the Harry Potter series now, their best bet would be to do it as an on-line streaming series with each book being one season and each book chapter a separate episode. However, the producers would still run into the same length issue beginning with Goblet of Fire and perhaps have to split books 4, 5, 6, and 7 into two season arcs each for a total of 11 seasons of a streaming series. Is any production company out there willing to take the risk of committing to 11 seasons of a TV series from the very beginning?

Yes, the tail would have been permanent. In the book, after getting his belongings, Hagrid doesn't drop him off at the station. Remember its Harry's birthday. School doesn't start until September 1st. So Hagrid, in theory in this movie, just left Harry at a train station for a month. But of course this doesn't happen either. In the book Hagrid drops him back off with his Aunt and uncle till September 1st. Anyway two reasons they were willing to take harry was one because they had to come get the tail removed, and two they didn't think platform 9 3/4 existed so they thought they where abandoning him in London.

So Philosopher's Stone is an actual mythical object (in our reality, not just HP's) Nikolas Flamel; a notary and bookseller, did actually exist though, and really did claim to have discovered it in 1382. It's to do with Alchemy, but was also claimed to be the elixir of life, granting immortality. So the reason Sorcerer doesn't really make sense is because it's a real legend, with no mention of sorcery. I'm excited for you guys to see the rest, especially the later movies, you find out so much, the drama and story behind everything, think you'll really enjoy it!
