I think such elements recognizable from the real world are why the Harry Potter series became so popular. A story is easier to relate to when it contains elements we are already familiar with.

I'll never forget how 3 half trained teenagers managed to take out Dolohov. A seasoned terrorist who'd likely defeated dozens of aurors. Aurors that received years of intense training after graduating Hogwarts. It makes about as much sense as some housewife defeating a top tier CIA/MI-6/Mossad agent.

It is amazing how much time and effort is put into "educating" children, and how little of it is useful in life. In America it cost between 10-20k a year for public education, and most come out of high-school barely qualified for minimum wage work.

True. We need classes that forces high schoolers to learn how to make fast food, how to mow lawns, and other mundane repetitive tasks. In tired of people messing up my order at Taco Bell.

Youre analysis of what happens to normal schools compared to Hogwarts is excellent. I can testify that also in real (muggle) worlds the children (like the trio) educate themselves much more than schools do. When even a teacher (primary school, 6th grade) admits that those few children (lever Hermione) solved maths she could not solve herself. With this admitting that 10-11 years old did know more about that subject as even a teacher.... let alone other people who forget their school educatipon after exams. (This was about 3 children , yes also a trio out of about 60 children) getting other things to do at school because the standard stuff was even according to school much to boring for them ... even a real Hermione would need all her witts to compete with those 3 children).

I'm about the same age as JKR and, although I live on the other side of the world, some of the Hogwarts experiences were very familiar to my own schooling. I'm guessing they were to the author, too. There is a great deal wrong with Hogwarts School: the culture (too hands-off), staffing (far too few), curriculum (routed in the 19th century), design (trick staircases are not conducive to moving large groups of people efficiently throughout a schoolday). None of the teachers appears to be qualified to teach and, given the appalling behaviour from many of them this is blatantly obvious. I don't necessarily have an issue with exams, though. People have to have their knowledge tested and if you prepare adequately or are interested in a subject I don't see how this should be a huge problem. It is one of the things about Hermione which annoys me silly. She goes on about her fear of failure when she is the least likely of all of them to fail an exam. Irrational and immodest. However, I do have a problem with the current trend of wrapping children in proverbial cotton wool. This does them a disservice because it prevents their learning to accurately assess and calculate risk. It also prevents children learning how to deal with life's inevitable peaks and troughs. In my view, this is the best thing we can do for them, not over-protect them so that they cannot cope with the least upset or injure themselves even more because they have not been taught how to take calculated risks. Good discussion.

Hogwarts, you are just another brick in the wall. Teachers, leave them kids alone.
