Harry's story may be over, but that doesn't mean the franchise milking is done. Warner Bros. wanted more movies and J.K. Rowling obliged them with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the story of Newt Scamander and his love of misunderstood magical beasts... a story which gets completely taken over by a dark wizard threat remarkably similar to the one audiences just watched eight movies about. Funny thing, that.

As far as I understood it, Harry isn't a Obscurum (did I spell that right?) because he didn't grow up hating magic ... yes, he thought he was weird and the Dursleys told him so time and time again, but they never acknowledged that Harry had magic. Harry knew weird stuff happened around him and he always got in trouble for it, but he also always had more positive emotions connected to the magic as it helped him time and time again. A child who becomes an obscurum hates and rejects the magic inside themself when it starts showing up at the age of 6/7 years old, and it is that absolut rejection of this major part of themself that kills them before they reach their full potantial at 11, when they would start their education.

Agreed. You have to really loathe the magic inside you to create an Obscurial, and probably by extension yourself. Like, suicidal levels of hatred. Harry never hated himself. Despite the Dursleys, he was always pretty plucky.

you are right. harry potter wiki says: "An Obscurus is the manifestation of the repressed energy of a young wizard or witch (known as an Obscurial). Described as a "dark" and "parasitic" force, an Obscurus is created when the child in question consciously attempts to repress their magical abilities or were forced to do so through physical or psychological abuse. This energy can manifest itself as a separate entity that can erupt in violent, destructive fury."

And how did dumbledore know everything was gonna turn out ok with him despite everything. I agree with you completely about David Yates: he’s a fine director, but he shouldn’t be working on these movies. I think so many of the issues you pointed out could have been mended - at least somewhat - if the film had focused on the fact that Credence is also a beast, just a very different kind. I think the movie might have felt more connected if that had been more clear.

That would have been a great way forward to tie the two strands together. But the script really should have done some of that work too. Unless it did, and they cut it.

I took a while to warm to Newt too, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of him. It's so rare to have a male primary protagonist whose chief heroic characteristics aren't classic alpha male tropes. Whereas Harry is all too often measured by his power, his sporting prowess and his bravado; Newt is a socially awkward man whose strength as a hero comes simply from his boundless compassion. Rowling has been responsible for a lot of really bad attempts at forcing a progressive mindset upon Potter fans (and I should clarify that the progressiveness wasn't the problem, just how she tries to go about it), but for once with Newt I think she's genuinely achieved something.

I wish they kept beasts and Grindy separate, they’re cramming two spinoffs into one and it’s annoying. I wanted to see newt in Australia saving those creatures, Italy, America to release the thunderbird.... that’s what I wanted to see! Couldn’t you see newt going into a underground market and through his introverted... ness, he finds a way to free them and the beast gravitate to him because they just now. And tossing the crew in there would be interesting as well, especially J and Q

An Obscurus is only formed if the witch or wizard knowingly attempts to suppress their magic. Harry didn't know that he had magic, therefore, while he was trying not to make stuff happen, he wasn't specifically trying to suppress his magic, therefore no Obscurus.

I really liked the subtlety with how the Graves actor carried the manipulation of Creedence. But yeah I really hated the twist with Graves and how much the movie bent to deal with a big mega quest. The movie and it's sequel have a core of a really great thing. But they don't wanna focus on it (more the second one). First one I've not seen in awhile but I kinda fell in love with it because of how much I enjoyed Newt and his beasts. Felt like the first time visiting Hogwarts again. I'll always kinda wish they went out and had him exploring in the jungles or some magical corner of the world. It's where I imagined Newt when I first heard of him.

I'm one of those that really likes Newt and the creatures' part of the movie, the whimsy, but yeah I agree, the Grindelwald parts are Bad. The original series did the work to make you invested in that version of the wizarding world and by the time it was at risk, you were invested in saving it. Fantastic Beasts relies on the viewer being investment from the previous series rather than doing the work itself. Also, you mentioned that while Grindelwald is clearly Worse than what's already there, the American wizarding world is harsh enough that it doesn't seem worth saving. I think this is an exacerbation of problems that were already present in the original series combined with JK's complete lack of understand of American history/culture/etc. and it's nuances. The British wizarding world of the 90's has problems. Systemic, institutionalized problems that the Death Eaters were able to exploit and draw people to their side. The house elves being one, the prejudice against muggleborns and people like Hagrid and Remus, the poverty of the Weasleys compared to the wealth of the Malfoys, the joke that is the Ministry judicial system. All of these and others are problems that mirror those in the real world, just with an added fantasy layer. And, like those in the real world, when there are these sorts of institutionalized problems, it's going to stir discontent and then all it takes is a charismatic leader, like Grindelwald or Voldemort to fan the flames of it, shape that discontent to suit their purpose, scapegoat an othered community, and use it to justify atrocities. When, in the prologue, the narrator says "all is well," they are lying. All the societal problems that existed in the first book still exist, and this makes the next Grindelwald or Voldemort an inevitability. The world of FB is all of this brought to a heightened state. The dementors were allowed to kill Sirius without a fair trial, Newt and Tina are allowed to be executed without any kind of trial. The paranoia wizards feel in the HP series at being outed to muggles it ramped up to 11. And the social problems attain a whole new layer of ick because those problems are being layered over American history, itself full of awful awful stuff. As you pointed out, the dark skinned house elf singing jazz stands out as an example, especially given the fact that there are few other people color in the movie (In the 1920s. In New York. During the Harlem Renaissance. :/). While this seems to be simply lack of foresight on JK and the movie maker's part, it is emblematic of larger problems in the film industry as a whole. But I would argue there's also seems to be an express interest in making the British wizarding world the Good One while the American wizarding world is the Not So Good One, made explicit in Newt's comments about how backwards the American wizarding world is. To me it seems, again, to be relying on the viewer's familiarity with the British wizarding world, rendering the American wizarding world foreign, even to American viewers. Which I think is a reflection of JK's own feelings towards America and all that is not British. It's interesting. Oh, it seems I went on a bit of a ramble. Oops :)

Completely agree about Yates, and for the same reasons you articulated. I did enjoy a lot of the film, but I didn't enjoy many of the visual choices, such as the muted colors. It's almost like they were trying to go sepia in some places. My theory is that Harry was protected from becoming an Obscurus by the fact that he never realized he was doing magic. I also think the wizarding world was portrayed the way it was because they're laying the groundwork for it to be plausible that many people would think Grindelwald had a point in the next film. "Grindelwald is bad but the status quo isn't great" may not be the most compelling thing, but it's something different from Harry Potter, where we had a pretty good status quo and Very Evil Villain.™ 🤷

If J.K. wanted to build up to Grindelwald and have him be impersonating Graves then this film should have just been about the fantastic beasts, with us seeing Graves and Credence occasionally when it would make sense (Graves being a side auror character, Credence with his family protesting, etc). Then have the second film have a different plot with Newt back in New York promoting his book or something idk and we spend more time with Graves and Credence, seeing the manipulation of Credence and getting to know their characters better, then at the end we get the Grindelwald reveal. Then we’ve now had two movies with Graves to maybe get attached to him and see him manipulating Credence so the change to Grindelwald more impactful. The third film should be Crimes of Grindelwald (not that that’s a good film but that’s beside the point, it still shouldn’t be movie fucking number two).

The rules for an obscurus are not a plot hole. Harry didn't know what was happening and therefore he wouldn't know how to suppress it. His powers came out all the time in weird ways, like the Dursleys take him to the barber every week only for his hair to grow straight back like he hadn't been there at all. Also the restriction on underage magic only applies to children 11+ I believe, so younger children would be doing minor spells at home all the time, then at age 11 it's safe for them to learn how to control their magic and not use it during the holidays.

I wish this film had been more about the beasts, the wizarding world in this new continent for the franchise, and the new main characters (because they, are, great!). I like to think of it as a prequel that could have been really amazing: it's based on a familiar thing, and linked to it enough to make us feel at home, but not restricted to have to tell an origin story to an important character in the original series. I would watch Newt and the gang voyage their way across North America and the rest of the world, of course being affected by the war that took place during the time, but not be the main players in that conflict. I think this would have been a perfect opportunity to add depth to the Wizarding World, while still being enjoyable and a good film or franchise on its own. Unfortunately, only about 2/3 of the movie was that, and then Grindydepp showed up and thrust us into a retelling of a

Yeah, for me one of the greatest issues with this movies is that they were supposed to tell the story of Newt and the beasts, but actually want to tell the story about Grinderwald. Imo, if they wanted this to be an epic battle between Grind and Dumbie in the likes of Voldie and Harry, they should have made Dumbledore the protagonist, and have the movies called "Albus Dumbledore and ....", or something like that. Or, make a Fantastic Beasts series around Newt, but make it be a series of little whimsical adventures of him gathering cool animals around the globe, nothing world-saving, just fun, magical and wondrous. Both could be really good, separately, but together they really just feel disconnected.

None of how the New York magical world worked was thought through at alllll. It felt very much like what a non-native view on America is, like no one actually American was involved in the creative process. Someone went through and said, we're going to make it different than the Ministry, but didn't, really. Only the window dressing changed. The French ministry in Grindlewald had exactly the same feel as everywhere else too.

I loved the bestiary JK had published and when this movie came out, I used my one movie pass to guilt my family into watching something I’d actually like. I used it on this movie. Ouch. My love of reading and writing, inspired in part by HP, steered me toward my current job as an editor (writer by night; hopefully I can hop on the other side of the desk in the next five years). Now that is *is* my job, it’s hard to turn off my editing sensibilities. It’s usually frustrating and a bit depressing to not enjoy a work because I’m itching for my proverbial red pen. Sometimes I feel a weird secondhand embarrassment. I wish I could have gotten to it before it was published, polish it more. I hate to see potential wasted or bogged down in too much detail, lazy writing, and tone or general pacing issues. Because of my love of HP, my experience with this new series has been even more uncomfortable than it otherwise would have been. It could have been so much better with even a few changes.

I fall into the category of being much more interested in the dark stuff. Had there been any threat at all from any of the creatures I would care but it was pretty much just Newt and Jacob playing Pokemon Go: Harry Potter edition. The problem is we're stuck following Newt who has almost nothing to do with Graves, Creedence and all that stuff that I was way more interested in. We pretty much had two different stories happening at once that weren't connected.

@@SweenyTodd98 You would completely expect Dumbledore to be the main character. Not only is the story partly about him, but he has also been implied to have an interesting, darker life before the main series, which I think a lot of fans would enjoy seeing. The only reason why I see JKR refusing to feature Dumbledore in the story about his greatest rival is the requirement of focusing on their relationship -- which isolates her from some markets. Even if a heavier story with slight LGBT+ rep that takes more time to work on aligns more with what she set up, she will tell pedestrian animal stories for a larger profit.

Show us wizard gangsters. You have to set your world to fit the time period it is in. Then, when establish the world, Introduce the characters. It would have been better if the story focused on creatures who escaped a wizard crate that came to america, and newt is called to find them and bring them back. Then Introduce Queeine, who gets invested becuase some important jewelry or something by the money-loving hedgehog-mole thing. Introduce Tina, show queenie's "cousin" not sister (Really wish they didnt make them sisters since they look absolutly nothing alike) who's assigned to help Newt with his animals, and then introduce Jacob who gets pushed into the group becuase he's a journalist (Not a wanna-be baker) whos trying desperately to get a new scoop in the paper (Becuase newspapers were a hot market to have a job in) about the weird and strange things that he "Supoosingly" saw. I like the general idea of an introvert, soft-spoken and empathatic character like Newt who is a witness to Grindelwald's rise to power as the central character of a movie series. He is then affected by all this like any bystander would be, but is not the hero who saves the day. Because that idea has already be done a thousand times before, and is boring as hell. But experiencing the story through the eyes of just a person like Newt is a wonderful fresh take. And they could build up his own motivation, like saving creatures and his friends from Grindelwald and followers, during the rest of the series. I can kinda seen that approach in this movie, it is more watered down in the next one.

As ever, a top-tier video. You make your points eloquently and intelligently, and I always enjoy hearing your thoughts on each of the Potterverse films. Be warned: this is a bit of a long one. Although this movie lifts a lot of plot elements from the first season of the Nickelodeon show The Legend of Korra, I am still more fond of it than all the other Potterverse films. It has the distinct advantage of not being an adaptation from a book, meaning that it doesn’t have so much expectation piled on it and doesn’t have to worry about getting all the details crammed into a two hour runtime. Also, since this was potentially going to be a standalone film, it also had a nice finished plot, in distinct contrast to the second Fantastic Beasts film. I would say I like 80-85% of this movie, as Newt comes across as a fun character and the action is fun enough to propel the plot. But, the remaining 15-20% does really get me annoyed. The biggest of which is the last ten minutes. When [SPOILERS] Mr Graves is revealed to have been Grindlewald the entire time and is unmasked in front of everyone, it immediately turned into the end of an episode of Scooby Doo. I was legitimately waiting for Johnny Depp to say the old “I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids” line. More importantly, it also felt like it drained a LOT of the mystique and power from Grindlewald very quickly. To me, someone like Grindlewald, Voldemort, or any of their real-world equivalents aren’t scary as individuals; they’re scary because there are people out there that genuinely believe and support the hateful things they say and do. Mr Graves was threatening because it felt like he could be a real person in government; someone in a position of power, trusted by the authorities and given free reign over a lot of government. Knowing that a person you’re supposed to trust is a follower of an evil psychopath is much scarier to me than the psychopath himself. If this movie had just ended with Graves still being Graves, but successfully convincing some of the American wizards and witches to come with him and join Grindlewald, it would have been a dark as hell ending, but it might actually have set Grindlewald up as more of a threat. Plus, it would have given at least a little weight to the assertions made in the next film that Grindlewald is supposed to be this silver-tongued deceiver who can talk anyone over to his side. But no, instead the climax is just Grindy on his own, and once he’s stopped then everything in magical New York is all fine again. No-one outside of the magical Scooby gang has learned anything to fix their broken status quo and presumably nothing in magical New York will change in the slightest. Also, slightly more nit-picky complaint, I got a nasty feeling when Newt was giving Jacob that body armour when they were trying to catch the Etrumphet on the ice in Central Park. Newt tells Jacob that only he needs the armour because Muggles and Wizards are physiologically different and Muggles get hurt more easily. Between that and a later tweet from JK, (which, if I remember correctly, stated that actually every Muggleborn witch or wizard actually had magical ancestors some generations back and thus inherited their magic; it was a while since I saw that one so please do correct me if I’m wrong), it kind of felt like it was actually validating the Death Eaters. If Muggles are physically more fragile, incapable of magic and incapable of ever having magical children without interbreeding, then it kind of feels like Muggles and Wizards kind of are different species almost. Wizards are already super OP; they don’t need to have physical superiority over Muggles on top of that. Why can’t Wizards just be normal humans that just happen to do magic? Plus, it opens another can of worms about Muggles and Squibs. We know from Mrs Figg that Squibs can see Demontors, and so have some basic awareness of magic on an instinctual level, so do squibs also have that stronger resistance to damage? Were Wizards and Muggles always physiologically different, or did this come over time? Has the Wizard defence buff gotten weaker as more and more Wizarding families have interbred with Muggles? And so on. Chances are, I’m just reading too much into this one, and that line was another instance of something being written in for comedy without the writers properly thinking about the implications.

Wizarding children tend to start showing signs of magic before age 6, and if they attempt to repress those that’s when an Obscurus can form. The reason Harry wasn’t an Obscurial was because he didn’t know the weird things happening to him were magic, so he didn’t know how to repress them. Yes he wanted those things to stop so he wouldn’t keep being punished, but he didn’t know how, plus he probably didn’t think of trying to repress them because he knew that even if these things hadn’t happened the Dursley’s would’ve probably just found another reason to punish him anyway.

I also HATE how wizards are suddenly really good at dressing like Muggles. In the first chapter of the first book, Mr. Dursley runs into a bunch of wizards dressed in wizarding robes celebrating Voldemort's defeat. McGonagall complains about that to Dumbledore because those wizards are dressed too obvious. But somehow 70 years ago wizards didn't wear wizarding robes and knew how to blend in perfectly? With this movie I could rationalize it by saying it's an American-British cultural difference but in Crimes of Grindelwald all the Hogwarts staff are dressed like Muggles too.

In Fantastic Beasts, it's safe to assume they were dressed either for comfort or conducting business in public. Just an idea (I'm not a writer.) What if the plot of fbawtft was newt's beast get lows and a side plot is the grindelwald stuff. Newt's just trying to help his fantastic beast and accidentally helps catch grindelwald. But then the news over hypes him and when his book comes out why yes it's popular but not for the right reason. Wanting to know his fight with grinelwald but getting a text book instead. I could keep going with my idea but that would be going in to fantastic beast 2 land.

Yeah, the Magical community in the U.S.A. sucks. As a U.S. citizen I was really looking forward to Ilvermorny as a movie & Fantastic Beasts being set in North America. I still remember the trailer gor Ilvermorny & a Native American being featured in it casting a lightning bolt down on the Mayflower / a ship sailing into the harbor from the stormclouds above, introducing wandless magic. I was so looking forward to that.

If the Harry Potter movies weren't a thing then Fantastic Beasts would just be an ok movie but forgotten, movies like the golden compass or the Narnia films spring to mind.

I agree it's not a perfect film and feels like bits put together but I enjoyed to a point the first time but liked it more each time I have seen it since. It's OK but not stunning. I like the part of the world needing changing because it does help that grindelwald wants change and can strike the right cords for people to latch on to. I loved grindelwald but fantastic beasts itself was good.

I rewatch the movie every now and then, as a feel good movie, it works very well for me. Don't you think it is the characters you should be invested in and not the world. A bad world can become worse with violent revolution which the movie(s) would be able to show very well. That's my take...

For me the weakest Movies we had in the Harry Potter was from David Yates. So I was sceptical when I heard he is the Director of Fantastic Beast and to be honest.. for me he made the same mistakes like in Harry Potter. But. Are their Mistakes or better to say his way of filming and I dont come along with that? B/C even when we have a series - every movie should be watched and understand on his on. At HP the 5th was the prologue to the 6th and the 6th the epilogue for the 7th. And here we go again with FB..

What kills it for me is they cast Johnny freaking Depp for Grindelwald. He's only an okay actor at the best of times, and this just isn't a role for him. Grindelwald needs to be someone with natural charisma and handsome features, and they would have been better off casting someone like Alexander Skarsgard for that.
@maurinet2291
@maurinet2291 4 жыл бұрын
And why did they make him look so weird? He didn't in the books, he was handsome and had both his eyes. Johnny Depp isn't giving a bad performance, but he only has one of his eyes to act with and it's really hard to take him seriously with that hair. A better Grindlewald would be one that the audience is half charmed, half rooting for too. Make him different from Voldemort that way. Then you could really delve into how a megalomaniac, charismatic leader works.

Unpopular opinion: I think this is the only actually good Potter movie. The first two were real clumsy, in terms of overall filmmaking and acting, while the rest don't hold up, if you haven't read the books. This one, meanwhile, is by no means amazing or anything, but it's straightforward, well-made and fun movie. Haven't seen the sequel and don't plan to.

I watched the first Movie last month for the first time ever and was disappointed. For me the title was false advertising. I agree with you that the best part is the part with the beasts, but it's way to short. The title promised me that I find out where to find them, but they're just there and Newt have to find and collect them. Why? Don't know. Why everybody hates him? Why is he still allowed to do it? Who pays him? What is even his job? How does the world function? Why is the wizarding world so messed up? What is it with erasing the minds of the normal people? Isn't that a problem, that one city is loosing their mind about more than one day. What is with people that come to the city after a long weekend and find out that nobody knows that their were gone? And it gets worse in the second movie. I like Newts silent character, but I think the maker of the movie didn't know how to portray that. And after seeing this Video I know what I didn't liked abou that overall feeling. Yes, it feels like a Harry Potter Movie and doesn't stand out as much as it should.

I can't agree enough with how forced the Grindelwald subplot felt, it had NOTHING to do with Newt's story, and that was my biggest gripe with this saga. Well... up until the second movie just straight up SUCKED in every possible way.

How can they break the rules? Dude, the mystery of HOW something happened that shouldn't be possible is the lifeline of the original series. The killing curse is supposed to be final, so HOW did Harry survive (TWICE)? Creedence BEING an Obscurial, SURVIVING despite being an Obscurial IS THE SAME MYSTERY. JESUS CHRIST, you people hate JK Rowling so much you'd think you fuckers never liked the books to begin with.

Maybe he wasn't a obscurial because Harry Potter didn't know he had magic? Also, this is my favourite Harry Potter movie: it had more creatures, humour, character, visuals, emotion and I actually liked the balance between a dark and light tone but just wish it didn't switch between the two so dramatically between scenes. If you don't agree with me, watch this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGanoJKYnZ51aJY Also, the Harry Potter world had dark elements as well and so do a lot of fantasy worlds.

Sorry folks, but I´ll just keep pretending that these don´t exist. Even though this one´s not quite the stinker (yet), it overall just brings too much stuff and facts with it, that I hate. I already refused to watch them, as soon as the first one came out, because the title in German sounds SOOOOO stupid, even stupider than the original title, I fucking hated it from the get go! No movie on earth should be titled like that! Sounds even much worse than, I don´t know, stuff like "Synechdoche New York" (which actually I would be interested to see some day)!
