Fun fact: the two GBC games were technically adaptations of the books, not the movies. They were in development at the same time as the movies so the devs couldn’t use them as references, they had to use the books instead, hence why some scenes from the books that weren’t adapted into the movies appeared in the games.

I think what HP games are missing is the real charm of the books, which lies in a balance between fantasy/battles and characters/interaction. The Persona system would be great, a game where you spend half the time talking to your friends in Hogwarts / building relationships / being a student, and the other half doing fantasy battle stuff. That's the thing, so much of the Harry Potter books are about chilling around in the common room with people in your house, and the games just don't attempt to capture that. I think having a Persona-style system is great, with maybe a few Social Links exclusive to a certain house (or the order you get the links is dependent on your house, i.e. you befriend members of your house on day 1, but need a few months of the school year to start meeting people of different houses) It can have original characters, or have you as a classmate during Harry's time if that's what people want (to interact with the existing characters), but regardless of how it would be done, I think this is the best way to have a video game implementation of the Hogwarts experience. It seems like such a fun game to me that I'm angry it doesn't exist.

These games are clearly a labor of love. Look at all the nice animations the put in there, especially the dragon at 10:51. It's beautiful. And it also like the styles of the enviroment. My friend like the Eragon RPG they made, so maybe they did manage to improve after all. And they also made a bunch of cool Lord of the Rings games for the GBA, after the first one was a horrible, buggy mess of a JRPG. Still better than the SNES game though. Great choice for a video, this is the content I'm here for!

Speaking about a Dragon/wyvern at 10:51: it looks like they are eating a pillow. Most likely this is not the case, but even then they are having a snack in their bed which is not the best idea tbh (Are they stress eating?). I really need some context to this scene (I am not really familiar with anything HP- related).

Harry Potter is not based. Casp is based. Therefore, I like this video. Tbf, back in the day, the HP franchise wasn't that bad and certainly not totally gay and self-hating yet (unbelievably, there was a time when HP was a fine-ish modern representation of traditional Britain; LOTR took that crown almost immediately but we somehow needed some Anglo convict's distant relative to get there). Rowling really went off the deep end and then had that delicious realisation, like so many before her, that the people to whom she'd been pandering were actually super shitty. I gained some vague amount of respect for her for sticking to her guns on an issue about which she's totally right, but that was from a hugely negative starting point after she began retconning her characters and coming out with lots of terrible opinions, while nominally being an ambassador for Britain on the world stage. There was actually another dude covering all the old HP RPGs on here and then - guess what? - he stops midway through his series because the JK trans thing had just broken and he took a Very Principled Stance(TM) by refusing to finish the videos. I thought he sounded suspiciously beta-max and sort of campy before I even knew about his virtue beacon so it was kinda perfect in a way. The moral of the story is don't bother apologising to neo-Marxists and also don't try pandering to them in the first place -- they'll treat you every bit as badly as a paid-up member of the NSDAP as soon as you fall out of line with the Current Thing. I'm just keeping my head down waiting for the real fun to kick off when paedophilia becomes The Thing (it's already happening around the fringes with stories about celibates in Vice and the whole "MAP" thing, but it's going to be fascinating to observe their strategy for mainstreaming it; anyone who thinks it can't happen merely needs to look to history to see that they normalised a lot of overwhelmingly unpopular things, for better or worse, over the 20th century). These games look kinda interesting. But the lack of cursor memory and poor battle UI is such a killer for a turn-based RPG. Imagine trying to watch a movie while playing a Pokemon game where you can't just mash "A". Cheers, m8. Love your sense of humour and '00s irreverence-bordering-on-edginess (god, I miss that era). And yeah, living in Britain is a year-round seasonal affective disorder. But I love bleak weather so it's perfect for me. It matches my current outlook. Pathetic fallacy or whatever. (Btw, long shot question since it's unlikely you'll even read this but, as a JRPG expert and on the matter of pseudo-lack of random encounters, are you aware of any JRPGs where the total number of [potential] fights is fixed? That is, enemies never respawn and there are no random encounters [or a finite number]? I like that concept because the difficulty curve is fixed and you know you're never overlevelled for any given encounter, and it completely precludes grinding. It happens in some CRPGs/ARPGs, like Nox and the first Dungeon Siege, but I'm not a big JRPG player, so IDK about that.)

@FaustXVl
@FaustXVl 5 жыл бұрын
There are some inaccuracies towards middle of the video: 12:35 Harry's ability is using card combinations, not the scan. Hermione can scan too. 14:53 spiders, not ants. This is relevant to the story since the spiders are fleeing from the basilisk which is also why it doesn't feel as handholdy to me. 15:37 I don't quite agree that there's "no time to stop" given that you can pretty much go almost anywhere in hogwarts at any time 16:01 there is no crafting in CoS One other thing about CoS that I feel deserves mention is that its maps are much more compact than in PS which improves the pacing a lot. I loved that game as a kid
@Caspicum
@Caspicum 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I skimmed through the footage as I was writing, because I played the first 2 games about 2 months ago, so I was largely going off notes and game cap. Some of the game cap got corrupted, because my hard drive is on its way out. There's a couple cross-fades in the Azkaban parts for that reason. I know that Ron and Hermoine have the scan ability, but I tried to use it with both of them, and it wouldn't let me select it. Maybe I was up against enemies who I had already scanned, but I genuinely thought only Harry could use it. That said, the confirm button on the controller I use is a bit dodgy. I just assumed they were too lazy to re-design the UI for the other characters, so just disabled the use. The spiders/ants thing was something that I completely forgot to check. I should've seen it in editing and proof-watching, hey. The "no time to stop" was more a complaint about the lack of side content. You can go anywhere, but there's no reason to if it's not story-related. I recall like... 3 side quests over the course of the 2 GBC games. Also wizard duels, which I only did a couple of because I didn't realise there was a fairly early story cut-off. :( That shit was sick though. I don't know why I didn't mention those... Are you sure there's no crafting in CoS? I swear to fug there was. I must've just got it mixed up with the first game. I did most of my crafting in Philosopher's Stone just before the final fight, and I moved on immediately to the second game, so I think that might've been where the wires were crossed. Thanks for the comment!

I love these games, but I fully admit they're not the best. Chamber of Secrets is my favorite though, I think because I think it lended itself better to the RPG formula than Prisoner did. Which is a shame because Prisoner did basically everything better. Little sad you didn't mention the music in Chamber of Secrets. It's legitimately one of my favorite soundtracks on the system, especially the final boss theme. Always wished you fought Tom Riddle in that game as a final boss, since then you could actually use magic and stuff. Also on a side note, this video made me nostalgic for the time before J.K. Rowling fucked up everything in the HP universe and especially before those dreadful Fantastic Beasts films came out.
@Caspicum
@Caspicum 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not a music-commenter-guy, I am 200% an audio pleb, you can probably tell from the video mixing. The extent of my music criticism would be "Yeah it's good." The only time I really mention music or audio is if something really stands out, so a lack of a mention is a good thing... In an odd way. That said, I loved all three soundtracks. I had a bit more of a chub for the GBA one, because it reminded me shit Final Fantasy 4 a lot for some reason, and I adore that game. That said, the dirty, low-quality Gameboy Colour sounds speak to my soul. Funny you should say that Chamber of Secrets is your favourite, because apparently the developers were fucked around by the publisher with the development of Azkaban, and it got heavily nerfed as a result. One of the blokes said that the first 2 were incredibly fun, and the third was a nightmare. I would've loved to have seen a Chamber on GBA, or a system where it could flourish. Imagine what they could've done had t not been stuck on that tiny little baby system for babies. I gotta stop rambling, but thanks for the comment! Maybe one day Disney will buy Potter and say all the non-movie shit isn't canon like they did with Star Wars! I don't know whether that's any better than JK, but wizards don't believe in toilets...

Anyone that still plays the original GBC game, there’s a nifty way to level up super well if you do it right Go to the item menu, use the combo cards and use one *AFTER* a big fight and *ONLY* if you won and have enough cards to do this. You’ll auto win, gain Xp then SAVE. Do this again exactly until the game freezes and it will after like 6-10 on average Afterwards, restart, win another fight and repeat. If you do this EXACTLY like this then you WILL not only get stupidly accumulating xp and items depending on the fight but can really cheese this later on if you have the Level Up combo. Trust me on this. I’ve tested this out countless times

Did you know that Prisoner of Azkaban is the game the devs hated the most to work on? That's because EA was forcing their ideas into it (specifically, make it closer to the movie than the books) and the devs had to stick with that Even the art style had to be changed (in the unused data of the game there's still the portraits used for the old art style, they looked closer to the GBC portraits but bigger and better) check the TCRF page of it EA didn't bother them for the GBC games because EA was already impressed with what the devs were able to pull on GBC It's a shame, Prisoner of Azkaban could have been much better if EA didn't do their usual bs My favourite is still Chamber of Secrets because it's the better product, has amazing music (thank you Ian Stocker) and still to this day it's a very good time for me
@Caspicum
@Caspicum 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I read about that after I made the video! I'd still say Azkaban is overall the better product, but you can tell they weren't quite done with it before it shipped. According to the interview, Azkaban was only about 50% complete, which makes me think it would've been a 10/10 RPG. What a bloody shame. You know, it really is a shame they stopped with the third one as I would loved to have seen them adapt all 7 books into JRPGs. They were clearly onto something with these and, to this day, the second and third one are arguably the best Harry Potter games. Granted, yes, the first one suffers from making you play as only Harry and no one else, but the others more than made up for this by improving the gameplay in more ways than just giving you allies.

These RPGS are excellent and under appreciated gems. I was glad to have discovered them as a kid. They do the books justice in a way that the other mainline games in the series absolutely do not. I jumped in at the Chamber of Secrets for GBC, and this is probably a great starting point for those of you who have never played these, because the first game on GBC does feel almost like a proof of concept for the second one. It is a great game, to be sure, but the second one just improves in every single way. Also sad because this was a video I was planning to do at some point and you beat me to it. I think the GBC Potters were really impressive for their time & limited hardware. You never mentioned it but Jeremy Soule's music is so good it even transfers well to the 8-bit sound. I loved the extra rooms as they expanded upon even what was in the books with things like the music and art classrooms. And all those statues and paintings telling dad jokes were pretty obviously self-portraits of the devs, which I think speaks to how much they cared about what they were doing :-)
@Caspicum
@Caspicum 5 жыл бұрын
The portraits being devs never occurred to me. You've blown my mind. God knows if it's true or not, but I don't see why it wouldn't be. The classrooms would've been fine, if they had some purpose. Seems like wasted effort to make these rooms that you can't interact with at all. You could say it adds a more accurate take on the school, but where :clap: are :clap: the :clap: hufflepuff :clap: and :clap: ravenclaw :clap: common :clap: rooms???? HMMMM>?>?> Also, the music was great. The GBC stuff was a bit rough, but that was the limitations of the little handheld's sound. I typically don't comment on audio because the extent of my music analysis would be "Yeah it sounded pretty good." You're definitely right though, that music was nice.
@thekiss2083
@thekiss2083 5 жыл бұрын
@@Caspicum At the time of the game's development, nobody knew where those 2 common rooms were located. That info came in Books 4 and 7 (2001, 2007). And yeah, they've gotta be the devs. Their hairstyles don't fit the Hogwarts aesthetic at all, they're all young people, and none of them are dressed like wizards. ;-)
@Caspicum
@Caspicum 5 жыл бұрын
@@thekiss2083 The common room point was more about the fact that they're literally nowhere. Or maybe you just think they're nowhere, who could say? Also, that's a good point about the portraits. That said, weren't the portraits meant to contain people from ages past and older generations and whatnot I'm not too keyed in on the lore. Come to think of it, the GBA title has more the types you'd expect in the portraits. I gotta track down that dev bloke on NeoGAF and get an answer. He's probably still alive.
@thekiss2083
@thekiss2083 5 жыл бұрын
@@Caspicum My guess is they agreed not to use anything from Goblet of Fire as it was published only a few months out from release. The common rooms obviously exist in the world of the books and they didn't want to just guess and end up being contradicted later. Plus Harry couldn't get in anyway. And the way the game is laid out, the Slytherin common room is in a corridor right off the Great Hall, right where Hufflepuff turned out to be. It'd be weird having 2 common rooms within a stone's throw of each other
