While there are things here that could be improved, it seems like a decent attempt and it certainly looks really clean and crisp.

Agreed. The Wizard of Oz seems super ready for game adaptations in terms of just how much the party of adventurers is pre-built and iconic. Of course I tend to think that's the reason it isn't used more often. It's SUCH an iconic property most people don't want to step on its shadow.

Ah no! Don't hate on Riz-zoawd. It's an extremely unique game that I don't think gamers of today can fully appreciate or understand. People are used to JRPGs with a fully navigable world map, towns, etc. Which would be great, admittedly. But it took several hours for me to realize that this game has more in common with racing games because of the way you speed through maps, navigate around obstacles, etc. In which case, the linear pathing makes total sense. I think the lack of a map and creating your own signs were all intentional, because the more you look at a map, the less you notice your surroundings. And I think the developers wanted "paying attention to surroundings" to be part of the game. Aka. traversing the Yellow Brick Road would be more than pressing up on a d-pad. I do think the weak point of the game is the battle system. While bosses can be challenging, trash battles are too frequent and too simplistic. Enemies, when placed in the middle of the road, totally ruin the pace of the game while you're dashing, almost like having a random battle while you're playing Sonic Adventure. Nobody wants that. And I think the game would have been much better if they either focused purely on the exploration end, or expanded on the battle system while reducing travel gimmicks. Production values of battle were also too low compared to the overworld. I know they wanted to appeal to fans of Dragon Quest with their first-person battles, but I think seeing Scarecrow, Lion, and Woodcutter on the field with Dorothy would have improved immersion. Even better--have the witches join your party as you progress. I also think you should have mentioned the outstanding OST, composed by Hitoshi Sakamoto of Final Fantasy Tactics fame. In any case, I have a huge soft spot for the design of this game, even for the parts that didn't work well. It has outstanding graphics, music, and art direction, as well as some unique gameplay combinations that I haven't seen before or since its creation. So I think it's not fair to label it a "bad game" and call it a day. It's just... too interesting of a creation to be written-off and forgotten. Like seeing a stranger whose personality and appearance make no sense, yet you have never seen such a person before, so you are invariably compelled to chase them if only to see what happens. As an aside, the official Japanese website for Riz-zoawd is still online after all these years. You can find it here: d3p.co.jp/riz/. Requires Flash.

Someone else made the comparison to FFX and there're so many games that do this exact bloody thing, it's a bit infuriating. Works way better in shit like Fire Emblem, where the overall challenge is positioning and timing. When you're stuck in very simplistic, turn-based combat, it's mind-numbing.
@camendiv4 жыл бұрын
@@Caspicum FFX did that? Granted, I haven't played it in over a decade, so maybe I just don't remember. There does need to be a balance though. Just enough where for instance, if the intended method is to remove all your materia to fight the Emerald Weapon in FF7, but someone would rather slot Final attack with Phoenix, hyper up the party and crush it in a dps race that shakes the ocean like I did, you can make it work xD

Have you ever seen the show Code Lyoko that used to be on Toonami? ... Did you know it has an RPG on the DS?
@Caspicum4 жыл бұрын
I vaguely remember it having two RPGs and an action game, but I could be confusing it for two action games and an RPG... Or mis-remembering entirely. What a weird show that was.
@ForumArcade4 жыл бұрын
@@Caspicum It was weird, but I love it. It was probably the first media that introduced me to the concepts of artificial intelligence and virtual reality, which I have subsequently fallen in love with. The whole thing is actually on KZbin under an official channel and I'm about halfway through watching it. The writing is sometimes a little shoddy and repetitive, but considering the average caliber of Toonami shows in that day I'm honestly impressed by the high-level concepts the show handled. Plus the fact that it regularly combined 2-D with 3-D animation and did it *well* . It may have been the first big show to do that. Certainly the first I saw. And it was French. What other French show has made it big in the states like that? Anyway I'm fanboying a bit. I enjoyed the new video. Thanks you for playing these obscure games... Mostly so I don't have to. Merry belated Christmas!
