Nah, PS2 CoS is the best, but I have played it on PC too and it's still amazing. It's just sad that the games aren't identical, as they should have been. But back then it was impossible to make the same exact game on multiple platforms, with how horrible our tech was, so it makes sense. Still sad, though
@JrKengu4 жыл бұрын
@@nyxnightmare3542 why is it sad? I think it's great because each version of the games has something the other doesn't. thats something that will never happen again, you will always have the same exact copy of a game on any platform.
@nyxnightmare35424 жыл бұрын
@@JrKengu That's a good thing, though. Console players have always been shit on because their games have always usually been objectively worse than PC games, because of the fact that they're entirely different games even with the same exact title. In HP's case, PC was actually objectively worse for the first 3, because they were made for console players in mind first, then PC second. It's wrong, whichever platform it is. Games shouldn't be different on each platform, it really discriminates against the players who want the game, but can't afford either a console or a PC in order to play the game they want, so instead they get stuck with the worse version (or at least one they didn't want). Gaming should never be so divided, but it was for its entirety, and luckily that's changed these days. No one is fully left out. Sure, console players can't have mods, for example, but at least now they have the same games PC has usually.

The PC versions of the first three games are simply amazing. Watching this inspired me to reinstall them. They're not perfect - maybe if they had been a little more open world - but they nail the atmosphere. The music by Jeremy Soule, who is better known as the composer for the Elder Scrolls games, is a huge part of it. The games, being movie tie-ins, suffered a lot when it came to story and world-building. Like a lot of other movie tie-ins, they would cover only the bare basics so as to not 'spoil' the movie - basically ensuring that anyone playing the game who had not seen the film or at least read the book would have no clue what was happening. It's a shame for HP especially because the books had already been out for years by the time each movie was released, so their hesitation to adequately present a complete story just came across as silly. To this day, the gold standard for HP games remains that original trilogy and the Lego Harry Potter games, which you didn't cover here but I imagine you must have played. If not, I really recommend them. Despite being Lego games, they really capture the Hogwarts atmosphere well and make great use of the soundtracks.
@baalfgames53184 жыл бұрын
What I loved about a lot of the older Harry Potter games is that they were their own interpretations of those stories. Not only that, but it feels like one of the creators at Least Read The books. I remember playing the PlayStation one version of philosopher's stone, and I cannot help but smile at the fact that Dumbledore said "Nitwit, Blubber, Odment, Tweak," or that Ronald Weasley retorted to Hermione after she brought up the devil's snare with "oh, I'm so glad we know what it's called. That's a great help." They make me smile because those are two quotes that are exclusive to the book that were not in the movie. The older games weren't perfect, but they had their charm. Being adaptations of the actual Harry Potter stories instead of Simply movie tie-ins is what makes them special for me. I also have a soft spot for the Game Boy Color games, which were standard RPGs, but I still enjoyed them when I was a kid.

Half Blood Prince sort of brought HP games back to their highlight by adding actual potion brewing, which we never had before. I spent hours just brewing, even though it was easy. Just the fact that I could actually feel like I'm participating in a Potions class was amazing. Too bad they didn't really have the same for Transfiguration, but we did get some Transfiguration class-like things in the first 2 HP games, so seems fair they'd focus on other classes later on

I'm a bit biased because I didn't play them all. But Order of the Phoenix was pretty good. I didn't like how I couldn't control Wingardium Leviosa properly but damn, I loved exploring Hogwarts as I remember them from the movies. HBP was a letdown in terms of exploration because as I recall, they didn't add much else. Sure, there were a couple more areas to go to but that's about it. Also, I understand that they're following the tone of the movies but I didn't like that everything was just darker in HBP.
@nyxnightmare35424 жыл бұрын
@@nicemelbs OoTP was definitely the best for exploration. That's still my favorite in terms of actually seeing Hogwarts. But HBP was still very good, it's biggest issue was mostly that the facial features were absolute let downs. The characters looked more awkward than, you know, like... depressed/sad like they were supposed to be in that darker themed setting. It really made the game feel more like a comedy type of game than actual serious magic stuff lol And for me, I love the darker HP themes. HBP is my all time favorite HP movie because of how depressing it is, and DHs is my second for the same reason. I like darker themes. But the games really failed on darker themes by making them look horrible. They did happy themes well with the earlier games, making them magical and child like, which fit the happy theme, but when HP got darker those last games really failed to follow up with it

@Yamezzzz4 жыл бұрын
Just want to express how appreciative I am that this video exists. It's incredible that someone from the other side of the planet has had such a similar experience to me. Harry Potter games defines my nostalgia. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on PS1 was my first video game and I love it to bits. Chamber of Secrets on PS1 was also great, with the PS2/Xbox one being a whole new game. I loved flying around on a broom exploring the exterior of Hogwarts in an open world. Prisoner of Azkaban was the one console game I didn't play but it was my most played GBA game by far. I also loved that despite recognising the flaws today (when I was a kid, anything Harry Potter was super fun, regardless of quality). Goblet of Fire was one of my most played Xbox original games. I still believe it was the worst at the time but I still poured so many hours into it mostly because it was Harry Potter (and the fact I paid £39.99 for it). At the time I thought it was a really cool modern style of gaming, even though I would have MUCH preferred the style of the first 3 games. This is what I thought the future was, and as a kid I thought the whole dark and gloomy atmosphere was cool. Order of the Phoenix on Wii, I loved, but not as much as 1&2, it could have been a lot better but I still poured hours into it. It felt great to do the spells with the Wii remote and the controls worked very well. However, just like you, I bought Deathly Hallows Part 1 on PS3 and I was incredibly disappointed. I never even completed it, it felt like a terrible third person "FPS" by someone who has never made an FPS before. I never even considered buying Part 2 based off Part 1. I really appreciate the time and effort put into this video, the Harry Potter games are really important to me. Also I'm glad you reject that crazy "Sorcerer's Stone" title I never even knew existed until not long ago :') I should really give the PC versions of Philosopher's stone a go, since I never knew about that and the PS1 game is my most cherished video game of all time.

It got to the point where it turned into a bloodthirsty competition of trying to get the fastest time in all the spell challenges. My dad got so good at the Skurge challenge that I’m pretty sure he completed it faster than the game said was possible. Spongify was the one I was best at :) Also, there’s a glitch in Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom where you can summon infinite gnomes from one of the toilets when you cast Flipendo on it. My brother and I threw over 50 gnomes to the bottom of the Grand Staircase and would try to see who could last the longest without getting all their Bertie Bott’s beans stolen. Good times!

Just before watching this video I want to make a mental-but-written note: I remember playing the first two games A LOT on PC and when I got my PS1 also again on PS1. Chamber of Secrets for PC is friggin' awesome. It has this metroidvania thing going for it where you're progression gated to get to a lot of areas and secrets by the spells you got in the game. That makes the level design so smart, since they start to tease you RIGHT the moment when you get to Hogwarts and see the stuff out of reach. I swear that game is SO smart hiding its secrets. Everything is an improvement on the first one as far as I can recall. I also played for a minute the PS2 versions a couple years ago when I learned they were different from the ones I played. Also Prisoner of Azkaban is great, it has some big issues and some tedium if you want to get all the collecibles and whatnot but it's still mainly the same gameplay, and its very open ended in its design which I can always appretiate. And then there's Order of Phoenix, I never finished that one but I spent countless hours just fucking around Hogwarts finding secrets. Man that was great. EDIT: That Prisoner of Azkaban I never got to play. I played the PC one at I didn't look anything like that, nor did it play anything like that AFAIR. EDIT2: Ooohh yeah. Goblet of Fire was a thing. Stinky.

At least in the ones you reviewed, all of the games starting from Prisoner of Azkaban and going forward all have a gameplay focus or system from other, popular games. Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets (PC) are the exception because they have a gameplay loop that is unique enough. Here are some of the ones I was able to pick out: *Prisoner of Azkaban (at least the console version) is similar to Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, where spells act more like items and switching between Harry, Hermione, and Ron is akin to changing Link's form with the different transformation masks to use different abilities. *Goblet of Fire is similar to Super Mario 64, where it's level-based (though Mario 64 has Peach's Castle as a hub world and Goblet of Fire doesn't, only a level select), has a collectable objective item that progresses the story, in this case being the Triwizard Shields where SM64 has its Power Stars, and has you replaying those levels to collect more of them ad nauseam. *Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince takes its Analog Stick controlled spellcasting system from EA's own Skate, where skateboard tricks are pulled off by rotating the right stick in certain patterns. *And, most obviously, Deathly Hallows takes its core gameplay from cover-based shooters, be it Gears of War, Uncharted, Spec Ops: The Line, Rainbow Six Vegas, take your pick. It's interesting to make these connections, since when you take that into account it sounds like EA started to get lazy and pull ideas from other games just to move development along and not waste time developing new systems, pulling focus all over the place throughout each release. I'll close out by echoing some of the other commenters. I hope you're excited for Hogwarts Legacy. I would be, but I don't plan on getting a PS5. The LEGO games do a good job being mostly light-hearted adaptations of the films, but are focused into a cohesive and enjoyable gameplay format (with a bonus of having next to no stealth sections apart from a small one in Philosopher's Stone) and I think they were really good overall.

The ps2 games were some of the most fun ones in my opinion. I loved having tons of open world opportunities and chances to unlock things. They were so difficult to me as a kid though.

As a kid I played the first couple games and love them. As an adult, I am re-living the story through Jim Dale's audiobook recordings (which I highly recommend by the way). I decided I would go back and play the PC games after finishing each audiobook. "What a great decision that was," I thought to myself for the first 3 goes-around. Aaaand then I got to The Goblet of Fire PC game. :( And then, of course, I got to this video. Thank you for taking the words right out of my mouth on this one. It was really nice to see your perspective here and I agree wholeheartedly with the same frustrations expressed in the video.

ikr I loved Prisoner of Azkaban, it was also kinda of relaxing I could explore the large grounds around the castle and riding Buckbeak inbetween actual missions. In fact, I prefer the way they were animated in that game over OoTP, it's all just more charming

I enjoyed playing through that first Harry Potter game on the PC back in the day. I remember here was an issue on my computer with color display and I had to play through the game with weird scrambled colors with some things in greyscale.

Those first three Harry Potter games were the best! After nearly 20 years, I've still never beaten the first game.

My heart actually exploded when you put the theme from the prisoner of Azkaban at the start of the video. Hit me in the feels so hard. Great video made me super nostalgic ❤️

I wish someone would do a video like this approaching all the different ports. HP1 for PS1, for GBC, GBA and PC are very different from each other and span different genres of game (the GBC port is a pretty good turn-based RPG).

I'm with you on the HP&PS name change in America. The Philosopher's Stone is a legendary holy grail for ancient alchemists. Even the episode of Disney's "Aladdin" TV series centered around the PS still called it "The Philosopher's Stone"!
@sollumi30142 жыл бұрын
I think the name change might be due to the fact that philosophers stone and alchemy might be less known outside of europe for usual consumers....? Or tbh it could be sth else entirely

I could probably trace my fear of stealth levels as a kid to Filch in Philosopher's Stone for the PC. It doesn't help that his character model is utterly terrifying.

As a kid I played through Chamber of Secrets at least six times on PC, but I could never get far in the previous game, Philosopher's Stone, because of how you learn spells in these games. In HP1 they wanted you to trace a diagram with your mouse within a time limit to learn spells you need to progress, and I just couldn't do it well in time after the first one or two spells. Maybe it was my mouse sensitivity or the fact that I was trying to do it on a mediocre laptop's trackpad, but I was very relieved when I tried Chamber of Secrets and found that they had changed it to simply require some decently timed key presses.

I can remember that Cos on PC was the first metroidvania/zelda-esque video game i ever played in the way that you gain new upgrades troughout the game in the form of new spells that you can use to unlock new parts and secrets of the castle that you we're able to see before but weren't really able to do anything back then.

It seems like the video maker it didn't like that version so much because of all the stealth missions, but that seems to be the favorite among fans of the franchise. For some reason, no one ever talks about the Gamecube or Xbox version Chamber of Secrets.

I am very surprised by how randomly I found this video after all these years and how perfectly it matches my view on the first games and the last ones. Thank you. Also, for me, if 4,5,6,7 part was released on a quirky engine of the first games with the same graphics and mechanics - in 2020 - that would still be a dream come true. Would definitely support this on kickstarter.

The nostalgia, Harry Potter was super fun to play, Whenever I went to the library, I always rented it and played it to my hearts content, the library doesn’t have the games anymore sadly. Also, the goyle voice acting in the PC version of COS is the funniest thing I have ever heard in my life
