Idk how anyone can say this album is "playing it safe" when you have "rock bands" ACTUALLY playing it beyond safe and pandering by releasing watered down pop and dubstep. A dude from pop boyband sensation 1D decides to go off in an actual rock direction, the complete opposite of where everyone else is migrating and probably uncharted territory for his fan base. This was a risk, imo. And I'm glad he took it. Also Harry sounds SO awesome live! I don't get it. We claim to be fed up with the subpar EDM/Pop clutter.. yet someone comes along in Top 40 with a live band/real instruments, organic production, seems to have an artistic vision going on, writes his own lyrics (as cliché as they might be), co-writes the music, has actual vocal talent & passion -- and we're STILL gonna complain and call Harry trash? Idk. I thank Harry for using the platform he's been given to represent the highly underrepresented rock genre. I hope he stays around and improves/builds on what he started here!

I know, but there were no complaints about the vocals either, just the lyrics. That alone doesn't seem like enough justification to dock the score so many points. And I'm not saying the album is perfect either- I think that the production could have been more focused on one genre/sound to make the album more fully developed (which is something I'm surprised Fantano didn't really use as a criticism, even though he did acknowledge it).

Some people have listened to enough music to know this isn't anything special. That being said, I can respect his vocals and aesthetic. It's just his presentation and delivery is kinda piss poor. Also just because no one is doing Dad Rock right doesn't mean he isn't playing it safe. Some songs sound like diet Bowie and not in a good way. Albums that call back to a different time but modernize the sound are Childish Gambino with Awaken my love reviving Funk and psychedelic music, Paramore with After Laughter calling back to New Wave, Carly Rae with 80s music on Emotion, Kanye West doing synthpop on 808s and Heartbreak. I could go on.

I have to say I'm genuinely really surprised by this review. I was initially hesitant about this record myself, wondering what Harry was capable of as I had only viewed him as a boyband member- but I was incredibly surprised and impressed. I thought Harry showed huge potential in this album, particularly with some of his poignant lyrics in parts and interesting instrumentation and production. Personally, I felt 'Meet Me in the Hallway', 'From the Dining Table' and 'Sign of the Times' are great. I thought his vocals were very strong also. Of course, like many, my biggest criticism of this album is that he borrows too much from classic artists, like Elton John or Fleetwood Mac, and the lyrics are somewhat cliche, but unlike you I actually think the album is in it's best moments where he is vulnerable and raw, rather than the 'fun' hits you felt were needed- not to say songs like 'Carolina' are not enjoyable listens. Whilst definitely not the greatest album he could of made, I thought you were quite harsh, especially given your earlier comments Oh well- still always enjoy listening to your opinions regardless :)
@joelikesthings7 жыл бұрын
He also thinks the album is best (lyrically) when he is vulnerable and raw. He says Harry plays it safe too much and wants to see more powerful and meaningful lyrics. He says about one track (can't remember which) that Harry talks about small issues as if it's been his rock bottom, when Harry has obviously been through worse than that and should express it better. The main downfall of the album in Fantano's review is the lyrics. He says the songs are "bleeding potential" but the lyrics make it fall flat. For most people lyrics aren't a problem (I mean, Harry's fans ARE mostly 1D fans so clearly lyrics aren't something of interest), but as someone reviewing the album, everything has to be taken into consideration, especially when some of the songs lean so heavily on lyrics.

Damn, this is significantly more harsh than I thought it would be. Not to say that I don't agree, on the /r/music discussion I stated I thought the lyrics were by-far the most glaring problem with this album (cliche, and clearly written by someone who WANTS to be much older and experienced than Harry Styles actually is), but in my opinion, 4/10 seems a bit harsh. If you're going to lambast Sheeran for an album full of cliche, kiddie-pool deep lyrics about love and loss, without even a worthwhile single, I think you might be too quick to realizing this is still a dramatic step for Styles and pop music in general. Anyways, always enjoy your thoughts and opinions @theneedledrop!

Joe Adam thing is, the lyrics being “awful” is COMPLETELY SUBJECTIVE. please remember that! what YOU dislike, others might like. stop saying fangirls are essentially ignorant to good music because its ~one direction~ and “we don’t listen to lyrics” ... apparently. everyone is entitled to their opinions, of course but if you put your opinion openly out there, then expect criticism. simple as that. again, opinions are neither right or wrong. you just sound kind of ignorant, pal.

Dad rock? Christ. Your dislike doesn't sound founded in any real criticism other than you thinking he needs to be writing a novel and that you don't enjoy the genre of music that he pulls inspiration from. He didn't claim to release a rock opera. Maybe it's because I've watched a few videos of him performing them live, but he puts a lot of heart and feeling into these songs and you can tell that "Two Ghosts" specifically meant a lot to him. I love the fact that the album had such a variety and yet the '60s/'70s influence is what kept it all together. Which, by the way, was a time that produced plenty of simple, dirty, and fast rock. It's not like "Satisfaction" had some deep complex lyrics. They don't expand or go into detail. It's still a great song. I also entirely disagree that it was a safe option for Harry to take when it was so different than what most of his peers were doing. Harry had a built in fan base that he could have just coasted off of by making identical music to 1D. Or try to do what most pop stars do and just do a collab with [insert rap artist here] to gain more "credibility" as an artist. He chose to do something different and step into a world that he knew viewed him as "that boy band guy." Hell, that's how I viewed him before listening to this album. It's probably my favorite thing I've heard this year. Solid 7 from me.

So, he came at Mr. Styles for making an album that's too ahead of his years, sounding like "over-the-hill" 60's & 70's rock at too young an age? Ok, seems he forgot the leads of The Doors, Beatles, Hendrix, etc., etc., etc., were in their primes IN THEIR TWENTIES.

They were in their 20s but they were at the forefront of a new musical movement unlike harry who is just doing stuff that has been done before
@bimbosummit5 жыл бұрын
AliensDidIt would you rather him follow the path of his ex band mates by doing a pop album or take a risk by doing a rock album?
@elizaanderson89095 жыл бұрын
meg No, but he could’ve tried finding his own distinctive sound. Instead he’s just replicating the kind of music he loves. We don’t need anymore Bowie, or the Stones. That’s exactly what is holding rock back today. The need to focus on and celebrate the past, rather than looking and pushing forward. He played it way too safe.

mateee. It's a first album by someone who was passionate about UK rock and then thrust into a shitty boyband from SimonCuntingCowell. Zayn got loose first, now Harry's got his chance. It's his first album, he still has fanbase (which pay the bills) he can't go making a Ziggy record right off the bat. Yeh it's not perfect, but it's still fucking good considering the background. Give the lad sometime to find his sound and explore everything that isnt 1D. In your defence this probably did come out too early after 1d's break up.

What do you mean "in your defence". An album is an album. When you review an album, you review the album, so I have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. Also, Nathaniel Bates, it wasn't good. I know this is your opinion but if you think it was good then just change your opinion for me. Listen to some other albums. If you listen to some decent albums you'll see that this wasn't good.

I actually really enjoy this album. It does have its cringey moments, but it was something that I wasn't expecting and I think it came out super nicely for being the departure from 1D sound that it is. First half is better than second half.
@unlovebreather7 жыл бұрын
I think this is valid criticism but I also think that you based your rating on your disappointment rather than the album itself. Its fine if the album did not meet your expectations but the record is decent.

I can't believe this guy! he has completely missed the mark here! he probably grew up listening to Carly Rae Jepson or something. This deserves way more that a 'Strong' 4. Harry definitely did not play it safe with this album. look around you, there is an onslaught of overly commercialized pop music playing on the radio - I'm in Africa, don't know much about American radio though- Harry took a huge gamble here while all the other artists are moving in one pop direction - excuse the pun. This album is so nuanced it's mindboggling! you hear a lot of rock, a touch of country/folk and a sprinkle of pop - to make those 13year old girls happy. I was terribly impressed with harry because I heard a bit of Pink Floyd, the old and new school Arctic monkeys, black sabbath, the rolling stones, the red hot chili peppers, Sturgill Simpson, the ramones... what more can one possibly ask for? i don't know maybe I'm just excited that it's not pop and it's an incredibly mature/soulful sound, a breeze. but hey, don't listen to me, I'm just a 19year old boy who doesn't know what he's talking about. Peace to you all.

Is context as important to music as it is to other art? Would we like this record more or less if that One Direction history was not there? Do we praise the tonal development or still see pandering with a different sound behind it? Just some thoughts.

i agree on the technical stuff. but the reason i loved this album because the songs, although technically mediocre, struck something really meaningful with me. it was that feeling of: this song literally puts into audio form an emotion that i didn’t know anyone else felt but me.
