I noticed Imogen hung out with Ben a lot in S1. She was always talking to him in the background and was standing next to him at the rugby match. Ben seems like the type to put on a different personality until he snares you, and then his internal horribleness comes out. Poor Imogen was fooled just like Charlie was!

My view was that he was as nice to Imogen as much as to any other friend - neither of them probably saw the other as more last season given that he was right by her side when she asked Nick out. I think the toxic side comes out when he is confronted with the truth of his sexuality in some way - so for Imogen, because he resents that he has to pretend (not saying he’s never attracted to girls, but that didn’t seem to be why he dated Imogen). All to say he’s a shitty/toxic boyfriend but wasn’t necessarily putting on a face just to snare Imogen

@@honorisalive yeah that's what I took his behaviour for as well. he definitely has a persona he tries to uphold in school, and when Imogen was just a part of his friend group she saw him the same way everyone else did (even Nick at the start of s1 calls him "mate" and mention how they hang out sometimes), and I think the glimpse we see of him and his parents at the parent-teacher evening speaks to this too, how he has perfect grades and a smirk on his face with parents on either side of his shoulder nodding in approval... he holds up a facade and mostly manages to pull it off so long as he isn't confronted with his own shit in some way, like you said.

They’re not close yet at this point (remember this episode is set ONE day after season 1 - warming up to people takes time!). I think asking that question unprompted can seem like taunting so I don’t blame Tao at all for taking it wrong

My husband and I literally both forgot our 30th anniversary. It was around 10 pm and my husband looked at me and said, "We forgot our anniversary." I laughed so hard and wound up making my one and only live video to share with friends on Facebook. We had our 36th this past June so we survived neglecting a big anniversary. I'm soooo not anniversary minded. I was so bad at keeping records of all my kids 'firsts'. Now mom's have those chalkboards they update every month. I'm so glad they didn't have that stuff in the late 80s/early 90's when I had my kids. I felt bad enough about neglecting their baby books.

And that's the first thing that went through my mind when I watched the episode: she looked almost relieved when she thought Nick was gay, possibly because then it would mean he was never going to like her anyway, no matter what. When she finds out that he's bi, she looks kind of taken aback, almost as if she was thinking that there had been a chance that he could have liked her, and still he didn't, which had to sting. Imogen can't catch a break this season. 😅

It feels like being part of a fandom discussion, in the best way! ❤ I actually didn't realise until Heartstopper & fandom discussions that leaving the door open wasn't just an American thing. I'm from Norway and I've never heard of anyone who had to do that. And I certainly never told any of my kids to keep their door open! Privacy is a thing, and it's better to have an ongoing open and honest talk about intimacy and relationships so that your kids can ask you things instead of enforcing some arbitrary body policing rule. Almost everubody in my family is queer, and it has definitely helped my kids feel safe enough to come out when they were very young. 🏳‍🌈🏳‍⚧

When you look at the end of season 1, you should always bear in mind that it was shot without knowing if there would be a 2nd season. Therefore, the ending should feel "round", like a kind of closure: a happy ending. Only after the great success of the first season did Netflix order seasons 2 and 3 from the production company See-Saw Films. That's why the sports day scene in the last episode, where Nick and Charlie are leaving the football field holding hands, is a bit left out in terms of the relationship/character arc of the two within the series.

I think parents can be supportive when their kids come out to them but then when actually confronted by actual physical expressions of that sexuality might make them uncomfortable. Hell, I think parents of straight kids have that expereince. I'm bisexual and just happened to marry my high school boyfriend (still married as I noted in my earlier comment) and my mom and dad were definitely not comfortable with the idea of me actually being physical with a boy. They didn't say 'hanky panky'. My mom worried about "heavy petting" and my dad referred to it as "grab assing". I was definitely not allowed to hang out in my bedroom with him with the door closed . Conversely, his parents may have also felt a little betrayed or irritated about all the time Charlie and Nick spent having sleepovers, etc. You could say that's their fault for making assumptions about what queer looks like.

I do think the season 1 ending was deliberately ambiguous so that it could pass as a coming out/closure scene in case the show wasn’t renewed, but then since it was they had to sort of retcon it in order to use the comic storyline for season 2. But I don’t think it’s entirely unbelievable- there’s probably some gossip and suspicion, but I can buy that Nick is popular enough for no one to really press him on it.

That also comes from the comics in a way because for something outside the main story (Mini-Comic or a simple scratch, I am not sure) Alice Oseman made Nick say that and Charlie was all confused 😂 21:10 I honestly would love it to have English be the native language in my country JUST for the convenience of having the word "boyfriend" which clearly defines a person you reference as being in a relationship with you. Here in Germany we either have a neutral word like "partner" or "Freund" (friend) so it is basically impossible to come out by simply saying something like "my boyfriend" (This is all hypothetical since until now I have not had a boyfriend yet, but for the future... 😂)

37:15 I’m not 100% if this is what you mean, but what you said here made me realize, for the first time, that it would actually be entirely possible to dissuade Imogen from dating Ben without bringing up the abusive relationship or the sexual assault. I have no doubt that Nick would warn anyone and everyone about Ben if Charlie wanted it, but Charlie is so opposed to outing Ben that he won’t even report the sexual assault. And Nick respects Charlie enough to honor those wishes. For this exact reason, I’ve always had a hunch that we would get this Imogen/Ben storyline and Nick would feel trapped and afraid. THAT BEING SAID, Ben’s homophobia (internalized as it may be) presents a very good opportunity to warn Imogen of his bad character without outing him. Nick could say something like “Listen, Charlie doesn’t want me to get into the detail, but Ben has been really awful and homophobic to him on multiple occasions. He’s also figured out that the two of us are dating, and has since started harassing me. I used to be his friend, and I know he seems like a nice guy, but he’s said some awful shit in private, and I felt like it was important to warn you.” I mean I’ve seen the whole season, so I know how it actually goes, but this could have been a better alternative.

I saw another comment that made me realize he could also mention the assault in a roundabout way. He could say “I saw him forcibly kiss someone, and I had to physically pull him off. The victim doesn’t want to come forward, but I thought you should know.” Or he could say “I saw him shove Charlie against a wall and had to physically pull him off.”

100% agree with no redemption for Ben. I know a lot of fans love the actor, and so they want a redemption for his character. It doesn't help that he's conventionally attractive either, so people are quicker to forgive. But to me, what Ben has done is much worse than Harry's actions. Harry is a bully and a homophobe, but you can tell he doesn't realize what he's doing is wrong. To him, it's all a lighthearted joke. He was probably brought up this way. Meanwhile Ben has been actively going out of his way to hurt Charlie. He knows he's a piece of sh*t. He keep saying mean stuff to Charlie and Nick both, was using Charlie, etc. He's hurting them on purpose, which is worse in my book.
