Harry , I sometimes admire how you think things through when you build. Working smarter , not harder . This time , I believe you have indeed invented the better mouse trap. Well done , my friend .

Thanks Brant. I have been lucky this time to be given a very good book with step by step instructions for rigging a 3 mast square rigged ship. I knew the basics before, but now I have managed to take it to another level.

Well, If I get to the ratlines before you get to your video on your tool, I'll just set the plastic ones behind for accuracy while I thread them. Thanks again for all your invaluable tips. You really are a blessing to the hobbyists who see your videos.

I’ll send you a harp tool when you are ready to rig another ship.
@raymondblanchard22133 жыл бұрын
I figure for me, tying the ratlines traditionally to shrouds after shrouds are in place would take only a bit longer that waiting to build a tool, but I might change my mind when I actually get into it 😁. Thanks for showing all your techniques and corrections, mine will be arriving soon, and I desire accuracy when putting as much work into a model as ships require.
@HarryHoudiniModels3 жыл бұрын
The Harp Tool is fast to make and will also help when doing your knots by keeping the ratlines level and evenly spaced as you tie to the shrouds. The Bounty at 1:110 is tiny, 1/3 the size of the Victory. So knots are beyond my fat fingers. For my Victory at 1:100 then I would tie. It is 3 times bigger!

I was wondering how to do those shrouds. Im not gonna do the wood deadeyes. I'll make em out of metal wire like yours. Trying to diy those small wooden things would be a pain, I tried it a bit. The shrouds I will weave through the hard way. Attaching them, well, I'll find a way.... Thanks for the game plan!

Haven't gotten to the making of the ratline tool yet? Would like to see how you make it, I may try to use it. I see that you've been busy. I have some time before my heart Deadeyes, (open center like actual Bounty) , since I only ordered six when ten are needed, but still needed a belfry for my 1:72 Black pearl so I needed to make an order anyway, to match the actual one in the movie, along with a bell that isn't included in the Zvezda plastic kit. When I get to the Pearl, I'll use wood deadeyes and thread my own ratlines as well, in fact on most models large enough, I'll use thread instead of plastic ratlines/shrouds as well as making sails, and using wood blocks, too. You really have inspired me with your videos, thank you so very much for sharing your skillful realism with ships.

I have not yet made a video on how to create the Ratline Harp tool. On my list for this year. A number of modellers worked it out from this video. I could in the mean time post my plans to build one for the 1:110 Bounty with the resources on my website page for the build.

wish i'd seen this series before I made my airfix 1/73 Golden Hinde! I went spare doing the rigging on it! I found the Heller/airfix rat line jig useless, not sure what I did wrong but when I did it there was a gap of nearly half a mil' between the ratlines and the uprights used far too much glue and, well, the look sh*t! just wondering if you could do a little video on how you made your tool please? or just some photos as i'd like to build more tall ships in the future they make a nice chance from tanks and planes!

Harry! You need to patent that tool! Create tools specific to scale and subject. Then market them!
@HarryHoudiniModels4 жыл бұрын
I looked into it but the patent cost was astronomical. I then calculated the target market, estimated sales, my tooling and material costs... it just wasn’t viable. I’ll just make one for each ship I build and the odd one for someone else who needs one.

Sorry man, just an idea!

Do you make and sell the ratline jig??? Afraid I could never make it as good as you can. PS: I'm in the USA
@HarryHoudiniModels Жыл бұрын
Hi Marc… I did make and sell them for a few years but only received a handful of orders and just charged $20 plus postage, which would double the cost to the USA. They were taking me from 4-6 hours each to produce individually, so I stopped selling them and instead made a video on the last one I constructed, where I explained how to do it, so anyone could make their own. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3_ZhWiYfruFf9E Since then I have come up with a new concept for the tool. It will work the same but be more versatile and easier to mass produce, hopefully by 3-D printing.

Here's another suggestion that may help with your wooden ship build. If you make the tool the correct width for your scale, ( Hard with your 110 Bounty I admit :-) ) this is a system I'm planning on using on my larger scale builds. modelshipworld.com/topic/20353-hmb-endeavour-by-pat-lynch-artesania-latina/page/4/ Many thanks for your work on this build, This is a kit I've got on the backburner due to it's challenging nature and your build log is going to be a massive help.

You’re right... bit hard at my scale and I didn’t knot my ratlines.
