You know I am building an old Tamiya 1/12 scale Honda F1 Car? I don’t so much hate Tamiya, they are just not my favourite kits. What I dislike is the vitriol from Tamiya fan boys about their hatred of Airfix. That really pisses me off.

I so agree with you about getting so obsessed with every tiny detail and exact replicas, Harry. Those who want to do that can, fine. It is meant to be a hobby, at least it should be relaxing. If it's not, then something is wrong. There's a bloke on the Britmodeller site in the UK, who stresses he builds the KIT, rather than the model. And it is pure nostalgia, about how we used to treat the hobby., He tries to reproduce the shop displays as they where when I was a kid, as well. Grown men on the site respond by saying they have been reduced to tears by it, because it brings back memories of their youth. Perhaps that is telling us something

I came back to the hobby with only a nail grooming set for tools and a stable table to work on with a carpenters knife… it was very nostalgic to just build in front of the TV with the kit on my lap. Dear Harry, hahaha, i love your rant on Airfix "no fun here" detail parts. I'm also likewise very similar to you. Building since age 7 (65 now) and i do get annoyed at the "too much is not enough" brigade and the cost of all the add on parts. Airfix, Frog, Triang, early Revell, Monogram were fun to build, as is, out the box. Humbrol enamel paints, Testors tube glue, basic model tools (pen knife, compass spike tip to push a hole in !) My late wife and daughters actually joined in chasing down wanted kits and getting started on the building. The boy friends on visiting were shocked to see the delightful displayed models, -they too scared to have a go ! Years served with the RAAF and the ROKAF here in South Korea proved to me that panel lines, shadows and weathering IS over done, most aircraft ARE clean enough, NOT filthy. WW2 Spitfies, Hurricanes did leak oil everywhere, and yes, i cannot fit well into the Spitfire cockpit while wearing a thick flying jacket. I can fit into a P-51D Mustang no problems as they are far more roomier. PLEASE keep ranting on, i LOVE IT, haha, cheers, Gaz 😂😂😂

Not just RAAF but Fleet Air Arm etc. Currently though I haven't set foot in my modelling room for 12 months. I think this maybe owing to all of the youtube modellers that I subscribe to and marvel at their skill, yours included. I only started this folly on retirement and thanks to Italeri I lost my mojo. I have an old Airfix Catalina, been meaning to do it as a wartime RCAF bird. Then Academy came along... that being said, I'm still holding onto it. I did a Bristol Freighter, using the Super kit and cutting it up. Replaced the cockpit glass with a thermoformed one you could actually see thru... done in RCAF markings. A tower controller had once remarked to one of our crews, "Nice plane- did you build it yourselves?" I also did a Nimrod with a CANADIAN roundel on the tail- during a Fincastle meet, our guys snuck out and put a 48" roundel on the left vertical stab! I got the reference picture to match markings, and it now resides in a display case somewhere on the west coast...I sold it to a buddy. So yeah, Airfix can be fun, especially if you can do your own mods.

My model building started in the mid 60s in the US when I built the Aurora Batmobile in 1966 at age 6. I started getting "serious" in the early/mid 70s and have quite the opposite views of yours of the kits at the time. Revell were to be avoided if possible, but i found Monogram to be pretty decent kits, though they did have fit issues especially on their larger 1/48 kits. Airfix were available, mostly in the "Profile Series" which offered several marking options, and "Historama" series with vehicles, Airfix figures and a vacuform diorama base. Airfix was ok, but seemed pretty simplified with respect to the aircraft interiors. I also found fit issues the same, if not worse, than Monogram. Recently, I got excited about Airfix releasing their 1/72 Sea Kings but was greatly disappointed. Again, they seemed overly simplified (especially the main rotor, probably to accommodate the working motor -which isn't available!- to make it spin), left off many noticeable features and tried using decals to represent cooling screens...it doesn't work. The Airfix Sea Harrier and Skyhawk in the Falklands Dogfight Doubles set didn't quite measure up either; i still prefer the ESCI and Fujimi versions, respectively, from the 80s. Maybe a new ejector seat for each.... The Airfix Ferret looks promising though. Every company has its ups and downs and we all have our own opinions on what we think makes a "good" kit. Like you, i build what I want to whatever standard I choose... don't care about competitions. In the end, I'm probably the only one that will see them until they get cleaned out after i die. BTW, chose modelling over a wife years ago after being accused of "playing with toys." One of my best life decisions.... Sorry for the rant. I don't think I have ever built an Airfix model. Lots of Revell, Monogram, MPC, and AMT over the years and I have always enjoyed building them no matter how bad the fit and finish was. The art of modeling is figuring out how to make it fit and look good by sanding and puttying, sanding and puttying, etc., etc. I commented on another modelers KZbinr channel that this was part of building a model and if you cannot take a POS and turn it into something great then you're not a true modeler. He didn't like that comment and blasted me on his channel because he thought the model company's should make their models easier for the beginners so as to increase the number of new builders. While model kits from Bandai are fantastic pieces of engineering that go together perfectly it takes all the fun out of building to me. I like that challenge and in the end I get the satisfaction of conquering the beast.
@HarryHoudiniModels2 ай бұрын
The easier for beginners trope is getting very worn out and useless. A kit that provides enjoyment and will tech you the skills of modelling is far better than a click together “no effort required” shake’n’bake kit that will just bore the budding modeller. Where is the challenge to do the next one?
@baanibarnes97112 ай бұрын
By the way, you will probably absolutely hate the range of 1:72 scale Bandai Star Wars kits. I have built several of these and they are (for me) stunning - the engineering is so spot on that the parts will snap together with no glue and hold together perfectly, no filler, no files, no glue! Outstanding (I can hear you swearing from here in the UK!). They go together like a Swiss watch and build into absolutely beautiful mini repros of the 'real' thing. Another thing that will chap your bum is you don't have to paint them, they come pre-coloured. Now even I'm not that lazy but it is a good way in for people new to the hobby. Bandai even have this neat production method where they have several different colours of plastic ON THE SAME SPRUE! Anyway, go and have a lay down, then a dig in your loft stash for a really old dusty monstrosity to calm your nerves. Seriously, love and respect from a fellow model nerd in the UK.

But that took me a day of checking flow rates, levelling, messing with temperatures etc to solve. Hi Harry. Are you off your pills again? I built some Airfix as a kid but Matchbox kits were my favourite. My Dad was a bit critical of the Airfix Halifax (but he did serve in one in WWII). Did 1/72 & 1/76 stuff as it was cheap. (Got done at John Martins pinching Humbrol Black enamel!). I came to the hobby 5-6 years ago and built Airfix's 1/48 Bf109E which was nice. Building Italeri's Marder III H at the moment which is...........quite bad. Scratching up some interior, substituted some spare bits etc..... I'll get there. Next I'll built Tamiya's Hetzer to get over it! (Also did Italeri's AB 40 and Staghound which were great kits). Hasegawa's Ki-100 that I'm building as well has an terrible fit to the lower fuselage/wing area, card and putty galore. The glacis of my Takom Jadgtiger just doesn't fit without surgery. I suppose you can find dodgy /challenging kits from any manufacturer. What's my point? Who knows? Smile and wave Matty....

I don’t take any pills or subscribed medication. My diet of curry and chocolate keeps my body quite healthy thank you. My sanity is another matter and no amount of pill popping could fix that!

Strangely, but I'm weird anyway, that's what my front door always tells me, back in the 60's I wanted a bit more detail, but when is detail too much detail ? I have bad and good models, so as I build roughly 30 plus at the same time, a bad kit or one with too much detail or pieces doesn't get me down as I just move on to the next one, my system also means I've never lost my mojo ( which is a big plus with my mental health since childhood ) and it works with my ASD. I don't build Airfix nowadays due to them not doing the genre I build, although I have a Airfix kit coming as they've released the first model kit I ever built so had to get that one, but I do have nostalgia for them days. Now go get modelling ya grumpy bu**** ( wotsit ), model on :)

I personally really liked the new 1/72 B17g from 2019 I think it was. I do have a serious problem. I don’t have any more space left for models. How do you store and display your models?
@HarryHoudiniModels2 ай бұрын
I keep most of my builds in storage. Then I rotate what is on display every now and then so I have a fresh set of completed models to admire in my cabinets.

Harry, i don't know if its the world we live in now but you shouldn't have to release a video justifying comments you make about kits. If people don't like what you say then they should just unsubscribe. I follow quite a few modellers & i don't necessarily like everything they say but the most important thing is, they are being honest! It also shows impartiality.

That was my main gripe with the Airfix Bulldog in the first video where I reviewed it. In the second video I threw out half the parts and built it without the over complex interior. Looked exactly the same from the outside and was 100% less frustrating to build.

Yes Harry , you are a grumpy old git. So am I. Had a pole recently on a model site concerning paying a little more for Airfix kits to include PE and masks. NO NO NO. Airfix is for all. However on this site the detail wnkrs won. Thank goodness it does't meen didely squat. Leave Airfix alone!! All the best matey. 😁

Having been an Airfix modeller from 1960, 99% what they made is good .What is destroying Airfix and off putting to having new modellers is the current KZbin " Modellers" and if you don't have the latest Tech , you're not welcome. Most of these are so far up their Asre they are off the Planet Scale Modellers my Asre..It like someone in a car factory who puts on the front near side wheel describing themselves as a car builder . Just my view on most of the KZbinrs To my mind , these KZbinrs are just assemblers . Including you , I would possibly rate 2 more as modellers, the rest , if they haven't got access to PE, resin parts , 3D Printers, air brush, an infinity of "authentic?" paints , weathering powders , panel line engraver and now Fekking Rivet Decals they wouldn't know how to model .No wonder the hobby dying and is restricted to a bunch of Johnny No Mates with deep pockets
@HarryHoudiniModels2 ай бұрын
I was sucked down the PE hole when I returned to the hobby, then realised you didn’t need over 90% of it to still make a good model, and that last 10% could be done by scratching your own detail, which was far more satisfying than fighting brass. Now I only get PE railings for small scale ships, although I might try creating my own in CAD and 3D printing them.
@jimbo77882 ай бұрын
@@HarryHoudiniModels As I said you and one or 2 other are modellers. The rest are just putting on the front near side wheel and being pretentious #####

I watch JohnsModelMaking build of the wooden Lancaster, and the Stobbart Tramper Lorry, not my cup of tea, I'd stick to the old Airfix, never Tamiya, but old Matchbox or old 1/72 Hasewega, not interested in very detailed kits as they take too long

I built kits as a teenager last century and built over 200 aircraft kits in 4 years with nearly all being Airfix. The 4 years I was at high school. Probably explains my not-so-great grades. But when I went back to the hobby as a young adult, mid to late 20's, the poor quality and fit and finish of a lot of the aircraft kits of the time caused me to change to armour kits. Tamiya to be exact. Now I'm getting back into the hobby, again, I have collected quite a few aircraft kits, but most are not Airfix. Don't get me wrong, the few Airfix ones I have are damn good kits, they just tend to be more expensive than some of the other manufacturers here in NZ. But you are correct about the over-detailing of most modern kits. I've changed to 48 scale (poor eyesight) and even with the larger scale some of the detailing just seems ridiculous. A 1/48 scale kit ate 1 meter is the same as the full scale jobby at 48 meters. Bloody hard to see even 10% of panel lines at that distance. And you are not a grumpy old fart Harry, just an Aussie. Best wishes from across the ditch mate.
