Yep he did also one thing I find interesting is, Flamel's Sorcerer Stone was stored in vault 713 which was one of the highest security sections of the bank and also seems to be an indication of respect and authority. Sirius' vault was 711 so that implies his family's vault was also highly respected and authoritative. So it could have possibly been even more then what Harry already had so maybe after inheritance he more then doubled his wealth, also take into account Sirius had bought him one of the most expensive brooms in the world which was listed as price upon request which implies it was highly expensive possibly the equal of a high end luxury sports car worth 50k+ and if Sirius could afford such a thing for Harry who knows how wealthy he actually was.

Another thing to note is that Harry also acquired the Black family fortune in the sixth book as Sirius made Harry his heir. Dumbledore himself noted this added a significant amount of gold to Harry’s finances and gave Harry a house Grimmauld Place. Harry himself didn’t really notice or care though as he was still moderately wealthy from his Potter family. I think a lot of people forget the Potters were pure bloods for centuries and considered a part of the for want of a better term nobility of the wizards(not the sacred 28 because when that list came out the current head of the Potter’s was an outspoken supporter for muggle and muggle born rights. It was actually partially because of the Potter’s exclusion that delegitimized the list in a lot of people’s eyes as it was known they were such an old family)

I'm pretty sure selling Galleons as gold is illegal; since in the Muggle world gold is much rarer. You can exchange wizard currency for Muggle currency in Gringotts, but the exchange rate is far lower then their Muggle metal value would imply. Because of this (on that note) I think Harry overestimated his fortune when he first saw it in the Philosopher's Stone. To someone growing up with Muggles a huge pile of gold and silver looks like it's worth a lot; but the same amount is worth much less to wizards.

I doubt the vaults generate interest; they're more like safety deposit boxes. Banks pay interest because they use _your_ money to lend to others who pay _them_ interest. Gringott's can't use what's in the vaults in that way. In fact, I expect the wizarding world had to pay Gringott's for the use of the vaults.

One of the most important points should also be that Harry descends from the younger Peverell, which name ended when his grand daughter married into the Potters. Sirius also dumped his own Vault (loaded with another mountain of gold) into Harry's upon Last Will and Testament. So that just made Harry even further wealthy. While his salary at the Ministry in later life as an Auror was also formidable compared to Mr. Weasley's, by being Head of Auror Office plus Ginny's amassed fortune as a world famous Quidditch player just gave them - by wizarding standards - F you level money. In a way it was poetic justice for the Weasley clan as they grew up poor, but all became either wealthy or upper middle class at bare minimum (thinking about Percy, Bill, and Charlie here tho Charlie likely is actually rich due to hazard pay and doesn't like being flashy.)

The Potters were wealthy, but they didn't flaunt it like the Malfoys. James and Lilly lived in a fairly modest house in Godric's Hollow, for example. Harry, living with the Dursely's throughout his childhood, where they routinely deprived him and he had to make do with hand-me-down clothes, learned from a young age how to be frugal, I imagine. So it's understandable how he was able to hold back and not spend it all and spread his spending across his entire school career, no matter how tempting it would be for a young child with all that money. His guilt was in part due to how easily the Weasleys shared what little they had, with him via letting him stay with them, feeding him. The Weasley's would never accept a hand out, but I like to think that once Harry was free of school, he found a way to pay them back.

I never knew how the Potters got rich. Thanks for enlighting me. But I was aware that Harry didn't waste his gold. Also was it always obvious to me that he had no money problems during the entirety of the series. I mean he inherits a lot of gold, twice; doesn't need to pay anything for food nor shelter; doesn't even buy himself a good sports broom. Heck, he could've bought himself the best broom there is but doesn't even consider it and in the end he just gets it gifted, like it was nothing; twice as well. The only expenses he has during school are small ones. Buying presents every year, some candy, butterbeer etc. In the last book he cannot even use his gold because they need to hide from the wizarding world, buying or filching groceries from muggle towns. It is pretty difficult to imagine Harry having had the time or any possibility at all to spend his fortune.

Actually, I always thought Harry maintained his wealth at least until he broke into Bellatrix Lestange's vault. Harry, Ron and Hermoine did some damage on their way out. What I have always wondered is, what happened to Harry's wealth after "The Deathly Hallows" . Did Gringott's demand that Harry pay for those damages? If so, did how much did that cost? Did paying for the damages eat up all of his wealth? Did the Goblins of Gingott's forgive Harry. They didn't seem particularly forgiving, but Voldemort and the Death Eaters was not especially kind to them. So maybe they forgave Harry in return for killing Voldemort. I get the impression that after Harry, Ron, and Hermoine joined the ministry of magic things improved for non-human magical beings.

You have investors who give people with an idea a pile of cash, and the people with the idea take that money and use it to make their idea a reality. After that, they go back to the investor and give the investor a cut of the money. Sometimes it's a one-off payment. Other times it's a repeating payment to the investor.

Also Harry didn't spend that much in the books. He didn’t have to pay rent, school fees (this was paid at is birth by his parents). He just pay for is school supplies and 1 month of a chamber in the leaky cauldron + 1 month of 3 meals a day. It is not says in the book if the goblins realized who had stole them in the 7 book (except griphook, but he died), because Harry, Hermione and Ron are not dead or imprisonned by the goblin nation as the poem in the entrance of the bank suggest. Also he didn't have to buy a house, just renovate it (which, in general, is cheaper than buying a similar house new).

Harry's the type that's rich, KNOWS he's rich, but doesn't lord it over others/think it makes him better. He had several sources of wealth: 1) His parents' finances were transferred to him after their demise, and essentially kept in a wizard trust for Harry when he came of-age/started his schooling. 2) Being in a bank, it earned interest. Interest accrues over time, and Harry's wealth had quite a bit of time to accrue interest. 3) When Sirius bit the bullet, he'd already written in his will that Harry got everything, including all of his finances which even Dumbledore said was "a considerable" sum, and even the House of Black itself. 4) Rights to potions made by Harry's ancestors included percentages of earnings made for each of those potions sold, so even MORE money was being piled into the vault. Essentially, Harry had no less than 4 sources of wealth, some single-time payments, others continuous deposits, that meant he'd never really need to work a day in his life if he so chose it. A combination of intelligence, luck, and taking advantage of a system designed to help people who store money in banks get richer means Harry's going to have a lot of trouble getting rid of it all, if he ever decides to.

Great video, although there is one glaring hole in the theory of where his money came from, that hole is in the Sorcerers Stone when Hagrid says: "didn't think yer parents left ya with nothing, now did ya?" Eluding to the fact that the gold was accrued by Harry's parents, and not his grand parents. I always assumed that the gold was deposited into the Potter vault as a form of life insurance payout from Lily and James' death. Lily and James knew Voldemort was after them, and it would only make sense to take out a significant life insurance policy on yourself in that situation. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think that the wizarding community has life insurance policies as well.

It's interesting that Harry was able to have access to his parents' money at age 11, because most orphans don't have access to their parents' money until they come of age, as mentioned in A Series of Unfortunate Events. They may be allowed small allowances every month for food and other necessities, but considering Harry would not have been able to have afforded most of his school things otherwise and he was a famous wizard with wealthy, respected parents, this status may have helped him. Dumbledore may have helped as well with convincing the bank to allow Harry access to his family's vault during his first trip to the wizarding world. It's also amazing that a teenager can be responsible and not spend it all at once, even though technically he buys all the candy on the Hogwarts Express so only he and Ron can eat, but after that he becomes financially aware. He also does wish to share his money with the Weasley's after noticing how poor they are, but Molly refuses his gold so he waits until the end of the fourth film and gives his Triwizard winnings to Fred and George for their joke shop. That's very generous of him.
