Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’ll be taking a look at five Draco Malfoy theories that have recently caught my eye.
To start, I’d like to acknowledge that there are loads of debates out there between fans as to whether Malfoy was a redeemable character or not. There seems to be two very distinct camps - one that believes Draco was a snake at the beginning of the series, and an even bigger snake at the end; and another that believes he was simply brought up in an environment of hate but was really a good person. The latter of these two groups, suggests that there is a very obvious character arc and redeeming storyline that Draco goes through in the latter half of the series. I must admit that I’m somewhat with the second group of fans in my beliefs regarding Malfoy. Sure, he was a pompous pureblood that did terrible things to Harry and his friends in their youth. But these terrible things were always done with juvenile intent. For example, in The Philosopher’s Stone, Draco was responsible for tricking Harry into thinking he was going to fight Malfoy in a midnight duel. BUT his true intention in challenging Harry was to have him found outside of bed, running around the castle after hours - something which would have resulted in Harry’s expulsion. EXPULSION - not death - not even harm. So, I imagine you take my meaning. Draco seemed to hate Harry but not to the point that he would cause him actual harm - at least as an 11-year-old boy. Of course, later in the series, there are many times in which Draco is presented with the opportunity to bring harm to Harry - such as when he was asked to identify if a very badly stung Harry was indeed THE Harry Potter. This happens at Malfoy Manor in The Deathly Hallows after a group of snatchers find Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the woods and they use a charm to puff up Harry’s face beyond the point of recognizability. Of course, the snatchers suspect it’s Harry, his lightning-bolt scar mainly to blame. But when Draco, home from school on holiday, is asked to confirm that the puffy-faced, adolescent wizard IS THE Harry Potter, he falters. He knows it’s Harry - we know he knows. But he does not confirm it to his father, Lucius, even though it would’ve brought the Malfoy family back into great favour with the Dark Lord, because Draco knows that if he were to identify Harry as HARRY, he would’ve been killed. This is one of the MOST telling moments into the true nature of Draco Malfoy. And, so, it’s with this perspective that I’ll be taking you through today’s theories on Mr. Malfoy.

These theory videos are normally really, really far fetched, and have very little evidence at all in the books. I mean this is obviously not the case, there’s no way at all that this is what the author intended, they beat the basilisk via their own abilities, Dracos only contribution was going on about how he wishes Hermione died, no idea why people like that character, he’s consistently awful. One thing I would like to see though, is something about the locket. I’ve no idea if you’ve done something like this already, but I’d be interested to know what you think the locket would’ve shown if Harry or Hermione were holding the sword. Obviously with Ron it attacked his self-doubt and insecurities, telling him that the people he cares about are better off without him, prefer other people(in this case Harry, obviously trying to get him to attack Harry), believe him to be useless etc… etc… It provides a really interesting look into what the characters can struggle with, so I think it would be an interesting character study, to look into what the locket could potentially have shown Harry or Hermione, if they were the ones trying to destroy it.

And his mom was more interrested at making sure Malfoy was alive then telling Voldemort the truth in the forrest.

I feel there was something overlooked. Once Draco found out who Harry was, he initially wanted to be friends with him despite the fact that he was being raised to look down upon one with such a lineage as Potter. It could be argued that this was in part because of Harry's status as somewhat of a celebrity, but I think a part of him genuinely wanted to be friends. Him being rejected fueled his childhood hatred. Still, as he interacted with other students, I think he slowly began to question his upbringing. He tried to reaffirm it by serving Voldemort, but this only deepened his questions. Eventually, he married someone certain members of his family would not approve of, thus displaying his full repentance of his actions and rejection of how he'd been taught to see others.

Malfoy was raised by a death eater, the sworn enemy of the Order whom had Harry's parents as members. They would always be at odds. Had Lucius been one of the wizards who died during the first war along with Bellatrix, and Narcissa gone to her remaining sister Andromeda and begged for her protection and forgiveness Malfoy COULD have had a much better, warmer, and nicer upbringing. Would he have still been in Slytherin? Perhaps but Tonks was a Black too, and she was in Hufflepuff.

I honestly believe Draco was written just like a kid we went to school with. He was popular, very mean, and exactly like his parents raised him. His dad hit rock bottom and took his family down with him. The boy was still mean, acting just like his dad even as a young adult. One day I saw him, homeless, divorced, and no friends. He was hungry and had been asking people for money. I invited him inside, asked him if he wanted to come eat with my family, and treated him as if nothing in the past mattered. After dinner, I bought him a candy bar from the register and hid the "emergency" $100 bill I use to carry in my wallet within the small bag. I'm not sure where he is now, but when we were driving out of the parking lot, I nodded at him bye and he gave a friendly wave back. He did try to apologize for the way he treated me in school. I stopped him and said, there are no apologies necessary. It helped me be the person I am today, so I wouldn't ever change it.

The last theory where the Potters, Malfoys, and Weasleys are related the Black family makes the most sense. Draco’s behavior toward Harry is more likr anger because he knew they were related and why didn’t Potter see that? Draco wanted, maybe desperately, to be Harry’s friend, besides being his cousin (or however the family lineage pegs Harry relationship), because Draco somehow knew Harry was more powerful as a pureblood surviving Valdemort’s attack. Draco did not want to kill family.

I agree with that Ron, Draco and Harry are all distantly related. Maybe Draco knew this, but there was no way Harry would have been aware of this. I think Draco as the years passed realized that he could not be a Death Eater. I don't remember if the mark on his arm is mentioned in the book, and I we know Snape had the mark, but was working with Dumblerdore against Voldemort. Even if Draco had the mark does not mean he was a true Death Eater.

In the movies, it seems like Draco Malfoy ripped a page out of a book at the start of "The Chamber of Secrets", but in the books it's more plausible that Penelope Clearwater tore the page out of the book in the library, Hermione scribbled the word "pipes" on the back. Draco knew nothing about the Chamber of Secrets or the creature within. Tom Feldon was a good actor, and he seems well liked in production photos, so I think that the director decided to give Tom that scene to imply his involvement, but it was never paid off. Draco's redemption started after his father failed to get the prophecy, being sent to Azkaban ("The Order of the Phoenix"), and he smuggled Death Eaters into Hogwarts in order to bring his family back into favor with Voldemort ("The Half-Blood Prince"). This didn't work, as even after being broke out of prison, Lucius Malfoy was still belittled by Voldemort and the other Death Eaters ("The Deathly Hallows"). Despite his feat, with Dumbledore dead and all, by the time of The Battle of Hogwarts, just a year later, Draco's star had fallen to such a point that even Vincent Crab and Gregory Goyel were turning against him.

With the Chamber of Secrets specifically, I've always wondered if Draco was the one who sent Dobby to Privet Drive... How would Dobby know where to go having never met or been around Harry before? Maybe Dobby wanted to warn Harry, Draco overheard or found him, and instead of turning him over to his dad, he gave Dobby the info of where to look for Harry outside of school. It would echo the same line of thinking in the Deathly Hallows...

Yeah no, Draco is pompous and arrogant but Lucius likely never openly talked about his plans outright in front of Draco other than his support for Voldemort and anti-muggleborn/anti-muggle sentiments. Even if Draco overheard it, he is not about to help the trio at this stage in his life. Especially since Harry had by this point upstaged Draco twice in Quidditch and got the better of him in the dueling club. Also Hermione had wrote any notes down about the basilisk and the page that was torn out could have been from another book and only the movie displayed it as a torn out page from a book. Sure Hermione could have torn out a book page, but this is highly unlikely and given that it was a crumpled up piece of parchment in her hand, she likely balled up some notes she had in her hand and hid it in case the attacker saw. It could be gleamed Draco did try and set the trio up to die, but as petty as he is, Dumbledore pointed it out in HBP Draco is not a killer he wouldn't stoop to that. Remember his attempts at killing anyone were so haphazard that he got lucky no one did get killed. It's a pretty lame theory that when you start looking at any evidence it falls apart.

It was clearly stated in the book that Hermione had the page from a library-book in her hand on which she had written the word 'Pipes.' I honestly believe that Draco was a redeemable character due to the incident at Malfoy manor, but it’s a gigantic reach that he saved Harry in this situation. The movies effectively exist in a separate university than the books, but Hermione would have desecrated a book knowing that lives were at risk. Hermione demonstrated a willingness to break the rules and there is very literally no evidence Draco knew what Slytherin’s monster was. An interesting effort.

Draco was the wizarding equivalent of Dudley, who finally got a clue in DH that Harry wasn't a "waste of space" and ignored Vernon's attitude for the first time in his life. Just like Dudley, Draco proved he wasn't a total jerk in DH. Tom Felton felt Draco finally had the chance to make his own choice when asked to identify Harry at Malfoy Manor and ignored his father's attitude for the first time in his life. Personally, it seemed to me that Draco realized he nearly died in HBP, so combining that with his internal struggle regarding his "mission," a massive wake-up call not to be a complete jerk to Harry anymore was born.

James was kind of an asshole and a bully according to Snape because he grew up spoiled, popular and rich even Lilly didn't like him until thier 7th year at Hogwarts when he became head boy and was more mature .Dumbledore wanted Harry to be humble so that's why he choose the Dursleys because they hate magic and would abuse him making him humble and not an asshole like James The Bond of Blood Charm was just an excuse to make himself feel better he knew that Voldemort wasnt returning for another 13 years. He even said it in The Philosopher's Stone:Harry needs to grow up away from all the fame and attention until he is ready. They literally could have chosen anyone else like The Weaslys,Andromeda and Ted Tonks or some other Members of The Order Of The Pheonix and Harry still would have been humble and protected from Voldemort.I think even Voldemort would have raised him better than the Dursleys Voldemort would have let him use his magic. The Dursleys could have literally killed Harry because if he wasn't rebeling against them and suppressed his magic instead . He would have become an Obscurus and would have died like Ariana Dumbledore .Things the HP movies should have been added and changed. From themselves not from the books Couples Harry and Hermoine Ron and Lavender Brown Neville and Luna Ginny and Dean Thomas Fleur And Krum Voldemort and Umbridge Hagrid And Maxime Dumbledore and McGonagall Other Story things:Percy filling Charlie And Bills Roles All creatures except Dementors Being with The Order Harry using Crucio on Umbridge in DH DH should have been one long movie Harry let's Malfoy and Dudley die, kill rita skeeter, harry uses imperio on bellatrix and tells her to walk through the vail, wormtails spell backfires and kills him when he tried to kill cedric in the graveyard Skip POA And OOF . Oof and poa are kind of pointless. Because poa dosent have anything to do with Voldemort but with James's past which is boring the only thing connecting it to Voldemort is Peter returning in the end.Oof is stupid because Fudge is a Moron and doesn't believe Harry and the prophecy is useless he already knew he needed to kill Harry also Harry being falsely led into the ministry is the stupid and they killed Sirius for no reason JK Should have stuck with the original idea to kill Arthur Weasly because he doesn't help much and Sirius would have been a good father figure for Harry during the dark times.Umbrige is the worst character in harry potter even worse than Voldemort she should have been killed not sent to a dementor free azkaban. These 2 installments could have been skipped and the series would have been just as good if not better.GOF Cut all of the boring parts of the book and made other things better like Karkaroff ratting out Barty Crouch Jr.Thats why All the movies except DH1 are better than the books in general. Also the bond of blood charm being the reason Harry has to be abused by the Dursleys is BS they knew voldemort isn't returning for at least 13 years so it won't be a problem he could have just stayed with the weaslys or with Dumbledore and they could protect him.The real reason Harry has to be abused is so he doesn't become like James. If I was Harry I would have let the dementor suck out Dudley's soul and I would have let Malfoy die in the fiendfire that's why my list is like that All HP Movies and Books Ranked from best to worst. Their love for Draco was more to them than their allegiance to Voldemort. Whereas belatrix would offer her son (if she had one) to the dark lord.

These theories all seem possible. I doubt that Harry had a crush on Draco, though. Draco eventually realized that he and his family were doomed unless Voldemort were defeated. Voldemort was a psychopath who was just as likely to kill his "friends" as he was to kill his enemies. He might have been jealous of Harry and hated Muggles, but he loved his family. His love for his family eventually saved him from being utterly corrupted. Without the small amount of help that Narcissa and Draco provided, Harry might have been defeated. 🤷‍♂

Considering everything, not that far-fetched, actually. In the books he's rarely shown any interest in other people, at all. He's cold and distant even towards Pansy even though she's affectionate towards him and they've known each other since early childhood, it seems. The only person he's shown interest in except for Harry is Victor Crum. With Harry it seems like he simply can't stop and there's simply too many emotions going on. Considering Draco is an extremely conflicted character, that wouldn't be that far from the truth. At the very least it can be presumed there was much more than simple hatred. Jealosy and desire to be accepted definitely.

@@EltaninMalfoy to be honest, I don't think that's the case. Draco couldn't be gay. Hateful? Yes. Jealous? Definitely. But I just don't see how he could be gay. Imagine what his father would say about this. No. Lucius didn't raise him like that, and if he found out Draco was gay, he would have either disinherited/banished him (best case scenario) or literally killed him (worst case scenario). In other words, Draco was raised to be a spiteful, jealous bully with a cold heart and no empathy to those he considered "beneath him", but he was NEVER gay. Know what I mean?

The audience has been softly conditioned to think of Draco in a more favorable light than the author intended due to Tom Felton’s attractive looks. According to Rowling, he was unkind, opportunistic, and had utter contempt for Harry and his friends, and muggles and muggleborns. He wished for Hermione’s death in CoS. He DID decide to NOT reveal Harry’s identity to his family in DH, and THAT saved their lives. I believe he had finally come to the realization that he would be directly responsible for ppl he knew and went to school with’s deaths and he, ultimately being a coward (final battle moments) could not bear that. He was a rotten and cruel boy. He is NOT Tom Felton.

I honestly do not understand, how people think Malfoy is redeemable and Snape is not, Draco calls Hermione a Mudblood that's okay (he calls her so on numeral occasions - and just for the fun/thrill; ad I do not think he only did this to Hermione Snape calls Lily a Mudblood - that is is bad. Snape was under stress atm - hanging upside donand being stripped in front of a group of people. Lily smirks before she steps in. (yes Snape called other peopel Mudlblood as well - but same thing) Draco was no death eater.... Debatable.... If he was a death eater it was only under pressure. Yes, Snape "choose" to be a death eater (I am still not sur eif he really had a choice, being the constant target of bullying in school and usually if you are the target people do not want to be assosiated with you) so I have been wondering for a few years how much of a choice in choosing his Slytherin friends Snape had. Draco was raised in hatred please... Now every thing he did was because he was raised this way? So lets talk Snape he was raised in a poos, abusive family (hinted in the books) - he was bullied by what could be seen as "olood traitors" (James and Sirius - Dumbledore who looked away) so what do you think he learned? For me... If Draco deserves redemption so does Snape. Yes, his teaching is NOT ideal - but who forces him to teach? Voldemort and Dumbledore. I do not approve of his way of dealing with students - but... Dracos ONE reaction of not telling it was Harry (and I do not believe for a second he was doing that to protect Harry, but out of fear from Voldemort) is worth more then 17 years of being a spy, helping over and over again and being killed for "the greater good" and help bring peace?

Well, there's one simple answer: Draco changed, Snape never did. Teenage Snape's behavior is understandable, but there's nothing to excuse him as an adult.

Those theories don't make sense to me, just the last one seems to be true. I think Draco isn't a killer, but he was spoiled, and raised in the dark ideology, and as he was growing up, he started to have second thoughts on a lot of matters, but he wasn't pure of heart, even if in the end he makes peace with Harry and the rest. All theories about Draco being good deep down in his little black heart are built on the movie Tom's performance, but when you read the books, you can clearly see that he is not a good kid, he is vicious, but not a psychopath.

Staying with the books it never says that Hermione ripped out the page just that the ripped out page was in her hand. If she would have hold the book open citing Penelope Clearwater the information the moment the stare hit them, the book might just have fallen to the ground with her having a firm grip on that page making it rip out. It might also have shot by itself or having the pages turn while doing so. And as nobody from the staff would have asumed that Hermione could have found something important but everybody knew she was carrying around books all the time one of the teachers might have just shut the book and returned it to the library.

#5- No I do not believe it at all. Since the book is superior and it didn't happen there it is not real. #3- Even after reading the book I believe with all of my heart that he was one. Otherwise why would Burke be scared so much from something Draco showed him in his visit there? #2- What is this bullshit?! Harry was never gay! Fans are crazy sometimes! Now for the question if he is redeemable- In my eyes absolutely yes. He saved Harry, Ronald and Hermione when he could have told the truth. He never exposed the fact that Harry disarmed him to anyone, by doing so he allowed Harry to put down Voldemort. Finally- He didn't raise his son with the same belief system he grew up on. He understood it's wrong.

When Draco challenged harry to a duel and didn't bother to show up, that was a huge breach of honour. If Harry had complained to Lucius about it, Draco would have had to make restitution. Neither Draco nor Harry were gay. Sorry woke people. However, Albus Dumbledore was gay as clearly stated by the author.

Out of the 28 in some form or another the remaining Pure Blood families held considerable social influence in the wizarding world. ALL INDOCTRINATED with the idea that only being born with two wizarding parents with a Bloodline gives you power and status. What they didn't realize was that power came from new blood. Power came from being an established family. A muggle born had pure magic, a manifestation of pure abilities. They could have benefited from, if they had've expanded their focus to just being Magical Most of the Families that died out would still be here.
