'Pull to release' clutches give a slightly higher clamping force (i.e torque capacity) for a given pedal effort relative to 'push to release' clutches, because they allow a slightly stronger diaphragm spring to fit in tho the pressure plate diameter. This comes at the expense of additional assembly complexity with the clutch release mechanism, hence them being worthwhile in some high powered applications, but not worthwhile in more normal applications.

I'm a hgv tech. Our last generation Mercedes Actros had a pull type clutch, changed to a push type now though. Much easier to get the box back in! It was a pain to line the fork up on a pull type clutch. Also, put the valve lap tool in the end of a cordless drill, saves time and saves your hands 😁

The mentality is much the same as well, it simply wouldn't have occurred to the people processing the order for the gearwheel to point out the partner wheel would be required as well. You learn not to scream with frustration ! Brilliant rebuild, great to watch.

Harry, I'm a trade-qualified automotive machinist (engine reconditioner) and when you change valve guides or put K-line valve guide liners in you really shouldn't be lapping valves like that, they should go to a machine shop and have the seats cut on a machine like a Serdi, Rottler, etc. When you put valve guides in they never line up as they did before with the only exception to this I've ever seen is on Caterpillar cylinder heads. You will end up with seats that are slightly wider on one side than the other, and you're missing out on a modern three angle valve job that will perform better than the original. Getting the valves ground and seats cut isn't crazy expensive, I could do each of those heads in around an hour each on a Serdi, plus around the same time to grind the valves. I would only lap valves if 1, I didn't have access to a Serdi, and 2, I didn't replace the valve guides. You're leaving performance on the table doing it that way, and the amount of time dicking around doing 48 valve seats it'll be more expensive and a much worse result lapping them. I'm actually shocked Ian is doing this, especially on a Lamborghini. I would never trust a mechanic to rebuild an engine, ever, they know how to do it, but often not the finer details which are important, that's why a lot of them bring engines to people like me. Also, I hope Ian checks the valve spring pressure before those heads go back together. You might think I'm just some doom and gloomer that always pops up in the comments section, so please give your local engine machining shop a call and discuss what I said with them to get another opinion.

@@johncrowley5612 I looked it up. The compression ratio indeed dropped from 10.5:1 to 9.5:1, but they managed to achieve more horsepower by producing torque at higher revs and clearly having more mixture available...(bore also increased)
@siraff4461
@siraff4461 2 жыл бұрын
@@mercedesw211classic Thats the static compression ratio but the overall active cr probably went up through having more time to suck the mixture in (larger stroke) and a higher stroke-bore ratio. Thats why it breathes better at higher rpm but would also ultimately limit maximum rpm. A better rotating assembly is how to get around that and they can then also use cams with more lift and duration but especially more lift at the ends of that duration. Again this would ultimately limit rpm unless better valves and springs were used. So generally this is a pretty comprehensive upgrade over the older 4.0l. Also dropping the static cr would help with running on unleaded and its lower octane numbers when it first came about - something it was almost certainly designed for since the seats are already capable. Its interesting stuff to see the engineering work arounds from those days.

I've seen those spacer plates before, i used to be into Hillman Imps and spacer plates were used on the big capacity engines, anything over 1040cc, they would go to 1200 odd cc with a spacer plate, they used wills rings (gas filled rings) to seal around the cylinders and thin head gaskets. I could never afford a motor like that (big money at the time), my Imp had a stock 875 Sport motor.

I used a pneumatic valve lapping tool 40 years ago. I think hand lapping is a bit of theater.

Craig shows that being a preservationist is often more challenging than being a "restorer." Respecting, of course, that he does both - but the preservation work done to those carpets was incredible. Every other trimmer I know would have started fresh.

Fascinating those plates Lambo use on top of the heads for more cc. You might as well get absolutely everything done on your Countach so that you can drive it out and enjoy it trouble free for many years.

Thanks Harry. I always look forward to your next video. You're one of the reasons I now have KZbin Premium. Free to air TV is only good for the local news now. Thanks again and all the best! :)

Remember the old plug in valve / valve seat grinder machine that most corner garages had, that you ground the seats on, and then you had a pointer gauge you set the valve side of it off of the machined valves so the angles were correct (opposite) . Thats the same problem as phosphor bronze seats you have with titanium valves is WEAR. Because they are a more durable metal, naturally they have a more abrasive nature on the valve seats, and frankly - most racers I have spoken to say Stainless valves work just fine

Harry, I envy you with your cars but you've given my bedroom poster dream to a master and his crew Tyrrell and this Countach will be the best of your garage when you get her home. my dream to have a Countach will never be but to see one reborn again makes me so happy. as they say dreams are for so many but for so few these days again I envy you, Harry.

I adore this car Harry. Sadly, with winter looming, I doubt we will see any 'on-road' content until next spring 😞 I wouldn't swop this car for any modern Lamborghini. Its just perfect.

Diaphragm clutch is as per Norton motorcycle clutch design , so we are considering it being hand operated which must indicate some mechanical advantage making it lighter to operate.. Using one on a bored out Vincent Black Shadow motor and it handles the torque with no issues.-, dry running with SureFlex plates. ps Iain Tyrrell Classic Cars do impress as being a 'safe pair of hands' to be in.
