@topcat42653 жыл бұрын
I simpathise but that completely depends on your driving style, the weather, speed, the terrain & traffic. The WLTP has never been accurate. We need to be accustom to knocking 20% off what the WLTP give us.
@BlatentlyFakeName3 жыл бұрын
Probably like MPG, they test it with no AC on, no heating, tape up panel gaps, drive like an old woman, etc. So it's not a realistic figure. In a petrol/diesel car losing 50 miles on a tank isn't a big deal, but it is on an EV. That is the difference between getting to your destination and waiting hours for a tow and recharge. Because if it goes flat, you are stuffed even if you are only a few 100 meters from a charging point. You can't just walk to a petrol station and come back with a jerry can.
@johnkeepin75273 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem is the structure of the WLTP method compared with reality. It’s worth studying the graph of how it works - percentage at different speeds etc, and see if it fits with your normal journeys or not. A trip which is mostly 70 mph is often wildly out in any car - unless you benefit from a tail wind!

@@jay-uo2bi I have been reading many of the forums. The 2.0 (pre-release) software seems to be a big improvement but not perfect. Harry, great video thanks. 25k miles into eGolf ownership here. We treat the range given by the car as a useless guessometer, a much more useful method requires some mental maths. As the car bases all of its predictions on previous use, whereas you know how you are going to drive the car going forward. So use the 'petrol tank guage' to work out remaining kWh available... eg 1/3 tank is about 12kWh for the eGolf. Then times by a miles per kWh factor appropriate to the driving style you are going to drive (2 spirited | 3 normal | 4 eco) to give expected range. Adding all season tyres reduced range by around 5-10%, but it's a commuting weapon on them.

@@gazfish it's a combination that needs focusing on and explaining.. A very new phenomenon called "charging anxiety" will be very real to many new EV users. It's a huge new industry that currently is way behind the curve. Other major countries are miles ahead and conversely larger nations lagging. Chinese lead the market in battery dvelopment but the whole product and infrastructure needs explaining and showing to the public now. The major reason for the slow sales is the basic question..... @exe8893 жыл бұрын
@@nigelbullock9039 "slow sales", really?
@patrickjr113 жыл бұрын
@@nigelbullock9039 2021 is a big year for EV infrastructure for sure in terms of general public awareness. According to Zap Map, there are currently 36k connectors across the UK with 650 added in the last month alone, with a number of high profile charge hubs opening recently. Charging Anxiety is not really a thing once you own an EV as you soon work out where and how you are going to charge for your personal circumstances. its just a new thing to learn. Remember, even with years and years and years of ICE ownership, 800k ran out of fuel in 2015, so not managing your journey properly is not exactly new. However, it is correct that winter driving hammers the range, as does running on the motorway, especially compared to city / suburban driving which is very kind to all EVs. EVs have been about in increasing numbers for around 10 years, Tesla, Nissan, Renault and BMW being the most high profile along with Kia and Hyundai. Most manufactures have what are known as compliance cars so they all have experience with selling EVs. VW has been selling EVs for a number of years now with the E-Up! and the E-Golf. So, the technology is not in any way new or untested. It is just, apart from Telsa, just under the radar until the government's recent announcement. The switch to a mainly EV car fleet will be much quicker than the deadline, as with all things, once your friends have them, they will encourage you to have one too.

@@bcmstfilms Yes my Kona (64 KWh battery) has a 280 WLTP. I get a good 240 in the summer (driving fast road/motorway) - probably 4.1 m/kwh and around 205 in the winter (3.5 ish m/kwh). Banging the heater on, winter's cold air density and a bit of battery 'cold gate' does it. Still its a perfect tool for 99% of driving. Even for 200 mile + trips to the Lakes with a bit of preplanning and using Instavolt or Polar.

He was on dry roads and using as little heating as he could get away with while sticking to speed limits on the cars speedo (usually a little slower than the actual speed). He also had the car in his garage/port and on charge the night before so the battery was already warm. That's not worst case by a long way. He's also working out the range based on the promise of whats left which in some ev's can be quite a bit more than can actually be had - though I have no experience in the I.D.3 on that one I have experienced it in a lot of ev's. I never trust range remaining. Always go from mi/kWh used and total used vs percentage remaining and you know what you're likely to actually get.

I bet you that 260 WLTP figure is coming from a test vehicle that is doing the majority of its driving in a Stop and Go enviroment. Doing all city driving would create lots more regen braking from making more stops (thus enhancing the range ability more) versus doing his run that was majority highway driving with a lot less braking, lot less regen action going on to extend the battery range.

This is at the expensive end for a small-ish EV. In fact it's at the expensive end for the ID3, being the launch model; later ones are supposed to be cheaper. But yes, right now it's not a good value deal. You can get a Fiat 500e for under £20k though, or a bit over for one with reasonable range. Still more expensive than a combustion version, but close enough that you can end up with a cheaper car after a few years' fuel, tax and maintenance.

Absolutely love your videos Harry. I'm 53. I say this because I'm intrigued by the electric car. That is, I'm not stuck in the past like a lot of people my age. Having said that, I love all of the old ICE sports car you review. The way I see it, the best of the automotive world has always been the visceral experience of driving in a machine isn't it? The vibration, the noise, the feel of the brakes, shifting a mechanical gear level.... It doesn't have to be the fastest, it just has to have character. The best example of this for me is the 2CV. On paper, it just sucks. But it certainly has character. It just has something that captured people's imagination. So I watch your video, with your beautiful mechanical watch staring me in the face and you are struggling to comprehend or articulate how this new technology will create that special feeling of travel, of being in a machine. For sure, the EV won't replace the old, analogue feel of a Morgan, MG, Sunbeam, Ferrari, Lotus.... but somehow this new technology will have to build a new character for themselves. It will happen somehow. It's just identifying what that character might be.

@ricardogoncalves6893 жыл бұрын
I agree that the announced autonomy must be closer to reality. However, this problem also exists in the data announced for internal combustion cars. How often do people believe that they can travel a certain distance by seeing the fuel gage or the on-board computer, and without understanding why, it disappears more quickly than expected. To minimize the problem, there must be a kind of reliable “reserve” of the battery, in addition to the autonomy indicated on the instrument panel.
@SteveBUK733 жыл бұрын
I would like to see Harry do a proper test, driving normally, 'real' motorway speed, heating on proper settings, radio etc to see what range is then. Regards cost, the list price is high, but that monthly deal seems like good value compared to the competition. For a 2nd car run-around though I think I'd go for the Renault Zoe. Similar range and tech, but there are £190 a month leases available on them.

It has taken quite a few years for fuel driven cars to get even to 40 miles per gallon and yet we expect electric which you can define as back in its infancy to get the same equivalency. I think the problem is not the range but the ability to charge it at the same time it takes to charge a regular car. If you can charge a battery in 5 minutes than we would not be complaining. Taking an hour or more is where the real problem lies. The battery distance will increase but what I would like to see if charging getting faster.
