He's like a natural when it comes to presenting, sort of like Harry, but Iain Tyrell is talking about even more technical and in-depth sort of stuff than Harry, I bet not many people could manage that and make it easy to understand and still keep it interesting and enjoyable as well! He sings in one of his recent workshop videos and was way way better at it than I was expecting, but I found out, it turns out he was once a jazz singer! How is it fair to have all that talent in ONE person!? Presenting and singing = "artistic talent", combined with raw "engineering talent", nice mix!

This is the problem with old cars in the UK - unless they're spectacularly low mileage, once you peel the paint off it's just bodge upon bodge upon bodge to get it through MOTs. So glad you're continuing with the restoration Harry. Sort the chassis out properly, make sure it's as rust-proof as possible and just get on with enjoying it.

The problem with all cars from this era is the inadequate rust protection on the “inside”of the panels and box sections of the chassis. I learned this through owning my current 1972 105 series 2000GTV Coupe. If it’s restored correctly it will never rust again! It won’t be cheap but it will be worth it in the long run as you won’t have to address the issue of rust again. Keep up with the great content of your channel and your videos with Iain tyrrell are superb!

Rust is the enemy of every car enthusiast, and sadly it seems to find it's way into every possible area - even worse when a drain pipe has been covered up, total nightmare! I feel your pain Harry, recently after a small collision to the rear of my 1985 Mercedes 230ce the initial investigation spiralled into a £12,000 restoration after discovering rust and bodged repairs. IMHO Harry these video's of your cars getting fixed up and made right are my very favorite! Hands down. Not that I don't love the other videos especially the road type ones where you take us with you on a trip in a special car etc. I'm always a bit disappointed when these videos come to an end. Dear Harry, go for it. And well done. I assume you had a second shot of Dutch courage, closed your eyes and mentally signed the cheque. Thanks from all of us - and for the fun of watching. This resto, combined with the car's history and its long-term relationship with you, will only add to its value. Which will more than cover your investment, as you consistently build its provenance. This as the ICE age recedes and widespread possession of ICE cars becomes a memory, which will further boost the value, in every sense, of cars like your Zagato. A valuable decision, in every respect. This was your first love. Many try to rediscover the car/s of their youth, maybe their dad's car, etc. You've done it. In fact, if I remember correctly, the car kind of found you. So there's all kinds of value involved here - including the driving pleasure resulting from the 'mod' aspects of this resto, the education of those new to the delights of Lancia and the entertainment of existing Lancia fans.

Not on the same level obviously, but in my twenties I bought a so called ‘renovated’ MGB Roadster which appeared stunning in old English white with wires etc, I can still remember the pit in my stomach at my first MOT as the garage lift went up and the car stayed on the ground - just a loud cracking and shower of rust - never been caught out again 😁

Almost made the same mistake with a gorgeous looking white spitfire when I was 18. I had fallen in love with the idea of the car and was forgetting everything my engineer grandfather taught me. Fortunately he came to look over the car before I handed over my money - ended up with 10 pages of A4 listing everything that was wrong with it. Gave me one hell of a bollocking. Interestingly saw another chap at college with it a few weeks later. Asked him if he had started the work on it. His face dropped. Didn't have the heart to tell him everything so just pointed to the rusty rear spring mounts and said he might want to get them looked at.

this a textbook example to anyone watching of the amount of work required to really restore a car that superficially looks ok. This is brilliant! Thought I was going to have to wait 6 or 8 weeks for the next instalment. This little motor is my favourite one in Harry’s garage. It’s the most accessible in performance terms and is absolutely stunning looking. These are wildly undervalued still I think. Not mad on the proposed orange paint Harry, think I’d opt for a very dark blue but I appreciate the reasoning. I reckon this wee Lancia will (in a few years) repay any investment made now. Cracking stuff ( what about the winter crops BTW after the snow).

Well the 10k figure is about right for paintwork. We do bare metal restoration on old Porsches and Jaguar e types. People use to bodge them up because they’re weren’t as valuable then. Now the value is gone up, old cars are getting restored again. Well done Harry for doing this car up. It’ll be amazing once done up. Can’t wait to watch more !

Love this restoration. I worked on historic race cars here in Belmont California. We did engine on Lancia Fulvia , owner used to run it at Monteray Historics. Notice a super cool car at 6:14 there is a O.S.C.A. #36 that was owned by Antonio Guinasso , the shop ownerof Auto Scientific Number 36 run at Le Mans in 1962

I'm reminded of the time I took my '75 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV to the garage a couple of years ago. I had a phone call from the garage a few days later - "About your Alfa - it's a death trap!" and that was just the fuel line problems. Once we got onto the rust it was a whole other (expensive) story. This all felt very familiar.

Harry, I have recently finished a full resto in Australia on a 1600 FSZ from Cheshire. This is not for the fainthearted, yours looks hauntingly familiar, brace yourself for when all the paint comes off. Lots of time with the English Wheel, a Dyson attached to the bank account and plenty of patience. Best of luck, I've lived your story.

Harry, I sympathise with you. I'm currently undergoing a full body restoration on a similarly rusted 70's BMW, however, being in Bulgaria it costs far less than what you are about to pay. That's just one of the few perks of living in a country with low living standards. It just makes me respect the man doing the work even more because he is crafting each body panel from sheet metal. It is an outstanding amount of labour and metal craft. Sadly, most body shops are sloppy and use copious amounts of filler and just cover-up, without structurally strengthening the car. It just hurts seeing this carried out to a precious car like your Lancia. Just stiff upper lip and go on with the restoration. This thing deserves it.

Another fabulous HG video, that you couldn’t find anywhere else! If it was me, I would do absolutely everything on the car while it was in. It’s going to be an expensive cheque regardless - but driving home knowing parts were omitted, or corners cut, would niggle me into the ground. By contrast, knowing the car was perfect and done ‘right’, would negate the pain caused by writing the check. Will enjoy watching the progress enormously, simply wonderful content Harry! What the pro said, grind it. And if you go an alternative route, do not sandblast it, you may warp the metal. Vapor blasting would be the most ideal route to go. Just don't get fooled by some who claim they vapor blast, if the liquid (usually water) is not introduced into the mix at the pressure pot, i.e into the pot containing the blast media, it is not vapor blasting. Best scenario would be to vapor blast using a rust preventative in the pot. So instead of hooking up the garden hose, you draw from a tank. I have done very thin aluminum on old planes with excellent results using crushed glass in a vapor blaster made by Ecoquip, who, I believe make the best units. God speed n good luck, let's hope content pays this bill, unlike the Espada. Love your vids, Harry, both farm n road. It appears the manufactures of fine automobiles do too.

I sympathise and feel your pain , Harry,having been there with rusty Lancia's decades ago. Like an iceberg ,90% submerged. Those Weber 45's won't fit without a bonnet scoop most likely.The guy looking at them then back at you was thinking so. Now you have got this far you have to go all the way and do a quality rebuild unlike the previous bodges to save her for posterity. The orange with black stripes looks great ! Good luck !

Great example of how reading a list of what has been done to a car on a previous restoration is nothing more than guide to where the trouble was and probably still is. A light magnet, like a business card type fridge magnet is great for finding how thick the paint and filler is, be it lead or modern fillers. I would stick with the original carbs if they can be saved, rejet them to suit the rebuilt engine. The 45 Weber carbs are only going to be of use at the high end of the rev range, and will have less torque at the bottom end. Sounds like there are a myriad of issues with manifolds for the 45s anyway. Don't forget on the exhaust side that 2 of the cylinders already have a length of exhaust track in the head, so the manifold pipes should reflect that. Another great video Harry, looking forward to the ongoing progress.

It's the right thing to fix it properly and do the color change now when it's simpler as all are apart...you would regret later and end up doing it multiple times or feel bad every time you see it. It's one of those now with the car you've discovered a few horrors and I agree with you fully (despite the overall cost😭) getting the car totally restored and colour changed. As for Rallying as you said you can use the Elan this year then in 2022 enter the Fulvia into the Classic Marathon or Hero Winter Challenge or RAC Rally of Tests as the Fulvia will be done exactly the way you always wanted it. 👍

I used to flog the odd car back in the 70s and 80s, often I would spread filler on a torn-off piece of paper and put it over holes etc, it saved using great big gobs of the stuff, and gave a fairly smooth finish, minor rubbing down needed, looks like this beauty got the same treatment.

The former owner did an american restoration: filler and paint. So the little Lancia went to be a very nice and charming car - with a big desaster inside. (Why did they stuffed newspapers in the Floorplan?! I found soda cans as main bearing in an engine, tin cans glued on floorpans, 2K filler mixed with iron particles (so it was megnetic) and other horrible things. But newspapers in this area? No.) But: Italian cars have a soul - after the rescue, it will give you true pleasure when you drive it! Stay save and healthy - greetings from Austria 🇦🇹

Hello Mr. Metcalfe. Very sorry to see the extent of the bodywork restoration required on your little Fulvia but heartened to hear your approach to the project. "...clutching at straws, here..." Fantastic. Takes me back thirty years to when I decided to 'sort' a smallish rust bubble on the front offside wing of my 1972 1275 Midget, under my Dad's car port. Planned to take the car to the pub that evening, but turned out the 'wing' was filler over chicken wire, over newspaper, glued to the inner with a crushed coke can (for structural support)! Strangely enough that car was also orange - perhaps they put something in the paint...?

I take it Xjc's repaint is going on the back burner for a while now! What an opportunity though - to effectively create your own personal Fulvia Zagato from a blank canvas. One of my father's best chums back in the 70s had a two car garage which consisted of a silver Maserati Merak and a Yellow Fulvia Zagato - a vision which has stayed with me to this day. Hugely looking to further progress on this. I fully concur on the viewpoint of not acid dipping the shell - it creates a myriad of issues down the line if it's not fully neutralized in the seams and crevices.

Uncovering corrosion and hidden repairs is always a bit of a nightmare but I guess it could have been a lot worse. Really nice to know the rebuild is aimed less at 100% originality and more on a useable, enjoyable road car. Can't fault your thinking there Harry👍 looking forward to the next instalment.

Well you found the true Lancia under the knacker laquer. I would like say I was surprised but that looks about par for the course - one poor MOT repair after another. The good thing is now it gets to be done properly which, along with the engine and mechanical work, will make that one of the most fun to drive little cars ever again. I can't wait for the vid of it singing through the mountains in the sun.

Wow! it's going to be expensive, but worth it in the long run for the smiles of fun it will give you. They have a great reputation for sorting out Fulvia's so it's definitely in the right hands. It will last you out once properly fettled. Thank goodness my drain holes work properly, I'd hate to think that it looks anything like yours underneath. As always a great piece of entertainment, can't wait for the next instalment.
