Exciting journey with a nice car in nice sceneries. I'm quite used to these kind of sceneries, as I live in the north of Norway. But still it's fun to see your trip here. Thank you. Next time, please visit me in Kautokeino in "Lapland". Kautokeino is along the way to North Cape. Winter-time gives you the northern lights (Aurora Borealis), and during summer you'd experience the midnight sun (24 hour sun-up). If you, or anyone else, would like to visit the arctic areas with a car during cold winter , please remember: - TIRES: Good snow-tires, as you mention in your video. Not all-season tires, but snow-tires, with or without studs. - COOLANT: Check the car's coolant temperature grade. You wouldn't want the car's coolant to freeze up during drive in cold weather. 50 % ethylene glycol - water mixture gives a freezing point at minus 33 deg.C. - WINDSCREEN WASHER FLUID: Check also windscreen washer fluid temperature grade to prevent it from freezing to ice and destroying windscreen washer pump. Don't use windscreen washer in subzero temperatures. - DOOR SEALS: Add a layer of silicone on the car's rubber door seals, to prevent doors from freezing shut. - NO WASHING: Do not wash the car in below-zero temperatures. Doors will freeze shut, the locks might also freeze. Even more serious - the brakes might freeze and stop working. The parking brake wire also use to freeze up, making it harder to use parking brake. Often you can apply parking brake, but it won't release. - LOCK DE-ICING: Always bring along door de icer. It's usually sold in gas stations as a small aerosol. Good tip: Keep it in your pocket, not in the car. Often when you really need it, you're standing outside a locket car with door locks frozen. Of course - this does not apply for newer cars with remote locking. - ENGINE OIL: Check engine oil. Multi-grade, full synthetic oil is preferable in the arctic, especially for cold engine startup. - CLOTHES: Always bring along warm clothes and a flashlight for safety reasons. - JUMP START, TOWING, SNOW SHOVEL: A few other items is also good to have in the car: Jumper cables, tow rope and a snow shovel. - WINTERIZED DIESEL: If driving a diesel powered car in temperatures below minus 7 deg.C. - always fill it up with winterized diesel. Local gas stations in arctic areas usually have winterized diesel in all diesel pumps during winter. Also - replace diesel fuel filter before driving in arctic climate. Better safe than sorry. I hope to see you back in the arctic soon, with another exciting car.

In Canada during the winter all the car washes have warm water but below -15c the door locks will freeze - that goodness for central locking And dont bother with adding a wax in these temperatures. It will freeze as a white layer on the car.

I was thinking the same thing. I picked up a rental car in Regina, Sask. one night, and my colleague broke the door handle off the door because it was so cold and brittle. A little embarrassing to go back to the rental counter with the door handle and ask, "We broke it, can we have a new car please."

It doesn't matter how hot the water is in the washer. The water will freeze eventually when you drive of. This is risky, specially in an old car. I never wash my cars below freezing point and especially not with that paint remover to a brush.

@@RobboElRobbo Where I live in Canada it is "freezing temperatures" much of the winter. So, car owners here DO wash their cars in such temperatures because we don't have much choice. You just have to put up a bit with frozen locks, windows and doors. But we're tough Canadians, so we can handle that. So can our cars. We would rather deal with those things than leaving the road salt on our cars for too long. That damages the paint and body components much more than a car wash ever would.

Bravo, Harry!!! Back in April of 1983, we drove up from Dayton, Ohio to Rochester, MN, where my father-in-law was in the hospital (Mayo Clinic) for pancreatic cancer treatment. My wife's oldest brother and wife had just picked up a new Chevy van about an hour before we left. After dinner in Indiana, we drove through Chicago. I took over the wheel and drove the rest of the route to the Mayo Clinic. We began the trip at around 6PM and once we got to Wisconsin and then Minnesota, the road seemed to be rough. I trudged on at 70mph. At dawn, I realized what the road was like, having thought it was only a rough road. It was packed down snow which had become rough ice. I immediately slowed way down. The van had regular tires and not even snow tires. It's weight must have been the factor keeping me on the road. That was the one adventure which could even barely (or not) come close to your journey. Someday, it would be a great time to make that trek to the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights. I caught them once, very faintly, in the middle of the night traveling on another trip to Chicago in the middle of the night on I-65 in early Spring of 1970 (a friend of mine who was an astronomy buff, was with us). There were no lights from cities that night and the sky was clear and bright with stars. I imagine that was about the furthest South one could see the Aurora Borealis. I've been further North on a clear night, but never saw the lights as it was always in the Summer. Great story teller, Harry. Very well done. I'll continue to watch your videos. Keep the shiny side UP!

In Norway by February he wasn't driving on much snow at all but hard packed rutted ice or frozen tarmac. Like Harry said, you wouldn't want to do that on summer tyres but on a good winter grip tyre it's ok, just keep your speed down and brake early. The temperature is the main thing, I was wondering if the car would start after being parked for the night but it seems like Harry has a good battery and has used the right oil!

It looked like it rolled of the show room floor, parked in a dark climate control storage for 20 years. Not wanting to take any chance with old gas and other fluids I had it towed to a Rolls Specialist and had it completely gone thru and even added electronic ignition. Had tons & tons of fun entertaining my Japanese & Taiwan customers making them feel very special when ever we arrived at the valet of nice restaurants. Not in a new & boring Mercedes-Benz, but in a gleaming new/vintage Rolls. My wife loved it, especially when we went to Vegas. Fabulous video. Very entertaining, especially for someone who has grown up and lives in the northern part of Norway. I have to point out that driving without studs in this part of the country in February, was a chance I would never ever have taken. That may work when it is as cold as you experienced and the friction is OK, but the weather can change very quickly. If the temperatures had been around freezing point with rain and pure slippery ice, the car can become a sledge. And that can happen even when you have studs. Believe you me, I have experienced. So, to those who plan on a car trip to Northern Norway from late September to April/May, take my advise and use good winter tires with studs.

Change tires after driving conditions is my suggestion. You don't want to loose grip on wet ice. That could be your last experience.

Hi Harry. Great video and enticement to tour in Norway. Your delivery is delightfully dignified - like your conveyance. Not contrived and scripted like Top Gear (much as I loved it). Did you know that Rollers were historically very very rare in Norway and Sweden in the 60's & 70's as they were hit with 150% import duty and tax, plus high personal taxes enhancing their mystic in Scandinavia. After driving my boss' Shadow II off the ferry in Bergen playing chauffeur to my Aussie parents in August 1978, we came to rest at the first traffic light. An elderly male pedestrian stopped in front of the car. Gently he caressed the Spirit of Ecstasy above the radiator cowling, and shuffled around the left side of the car. In a lilting accented English he spoke to my father... "Thank you sir. You have made an old man very happy. This is the first time in my life that I have touched a Rolls-Royce." Everywhere we stopped a crowd gathered. Your video has inspired me to plan a return tour of Norway in 2022 - 44 years after my only visit, on that occasion with RR waft power. Our conveyance this time will be a Citroen with Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension. Fulfilling my Citroen passion. The Shadow II had rear Citroen self levelling suspension under licence. It also had rack and pinion steering unlike your Ebay Shadow. As such the handling was more positive and could be quite fun in rapid waft mode on Norwegian and Swedish open bendy bits. Another memorable Scandinavian RR memory was passing an 80 kph speed sign on a coastal Danish beach roadway on hard sand. Disrespectful Colonials had sox drying in the rear window after rinsing them in the hotel bathroom. Tut Tut. In 1978 the new Roller would have been Aus $120,000 in Norway and Sweden. Around UK st 70,000. Later in May 1979, during 5 months youth hosteling around Europe by Roller, another classic RR experience occurred crossing the Hungarian border from Graz Austria. When showing the declaration of all currencies and the value of goods (in US$) on entry, the customs official would not believe the declared value of the car as US$100,000 (including 92.85% Aussie import taxes). I showed him the Green Card Insurance paper from Lloyds at UKst48,500. He took a pencil and paper from the counter and worked it out manually to get it to US dollars. The first time he came up with $102,800. The second when using 2 decimal points on the conversion it was $104,000 US. He looked at my passport. Australian. 26 years old next month. He stared at the insurance certificate and glanced down at the paper with his pencil jottings. In a very heavy Hungarian accent he enquired. "This is possible in your country?" I shrugged my shoulders as if every young Australian may have such a car. He made his own declaration. "In our country you could buy a whole village for your car." (It was the early days of allowing tourists to travel by car into communist Hungary. This was the only Eastern Bloc country where it was possible). A chattering between immigration and customs officials shaking their heads led to a mass exit to check out the village on wheels.. An Austrian tourist coach was waiting next in line behind the nutmeg symbol of Western Decadence and British upper class, as the uniformed throng encircled the object of disbelief. I let them ride the electric front seats, operate the power windows, central locking, then I opened the huge front hinged bonnet with the engine slushing away disposing of Arab oil reserves. One of the customs official pulled up the rear seat squab looking for contraband. He then ferreted around in the luggage of the open boot (trunk). Ah ha. He spied a circular split ring on a small chain tuck beside the driver's side boot hinge. What was he thinking? A secret compartment full of cash? He moved around the rear fender, peering in and yanked the silver ring. Whomp, the manual petrol flap release with a strong spring whacked him in the balls. His spasm caused him to bash his head on the underside of the boot. Much hilarity from the waiting Austrian tourists in the coach.. Something extra for their travel diaries. Communist keystone cops and a new Roller... great fun.

They’re just all waiting to see if the ferry can hold the weight of the Rolls before they get on. 🙄. Fantastic trip and amazing video! Sometimes you had me shivering in the cold. (I’m in Denver, CO, and it’s 75 degrees) love your incredible spirit and your generosity in sharing it with us. I’m sure it added many hours to the trip to video it.

Two superb and enjoyable videos, the best I've seen in a long time, great music, production and impeccably presented by Harry. As part owner of a Rolls Royce 90 years old this year and owned 53 years, it brings to mind all the wonderful journeys we have made in the car over a lifetime, albeit not to the Arctic circle but several continental ones without incident .It is difficult to describe that greater sense of achievment in piloting an old car with such presence , with the ' risk ' of wondering whether it will make it or not - but with a Rolls-Royce they may play you up from time to time but they always get you there !.Well done Harry , she deserves to be kept now and receive a few treats !.

A real tribute to a great car. Reminds me of the film about The Yellow Rolls Royce. I had a 1969 T1 Bentley bought for £900 in 2001 from a retired judge which had been maintained to the highest level. It too was faultless provided it was driven steadily.

What a fantastic video ! How much of it was actually scripted ? I would guess NONE . Its amazing how this guy can keep you interested the whole way through just by his narrative and obvious passion for his subject. He has really inspired me to want to take the journey myself. When you think of top gear and the enormous planning and entourage that is behind the camera that you don't see yet this guy has produced something equally entertaining as Clarkson on a shoestring budget . Well done Harry !!!!

Thank you for these exceptional and entertaining videos. Unlike so many other motoring videos your style of presentation illustrates that quality information can be produced in a manner which wholly engages the viewer, and all done without unnecessary noise and hype. Even the music was appropriate and not distracting. As an ex-presenter (UK) I thank you for a truly ‘Rolls Royce’ production, and look forward to many more.

Well, I've had my eyes on these videos for a long time and finally watched and enjoyed them - as a lifelong resident of northern Canada who has crossed the Arctic Circle on the remote Dempster Highway many times in temperatures that make Harry's -15C look positively balmy, I'm a bit blasé about the northern driving experience but I do like the way that lovely old Rolls handled the trip. As for the local cars being in such good nick, all I can say is that when you drive on ice and snow for five months out of the year, you become quite accustomed to it whether you have studded tires or not.

Harry, I‘m glad you are doing the metal work on the old Shad! I love the car and would love to see more vlogs on the car‘s progress! I own 2 of them. A very early 1965 and a 77 Shad 2. love these old cars. The Germans with BMW ownership sure mucked these cars up! Tons of plastic inside, and the woodwork is almost nonexistent! Very sad! The old Crewe built cars smelled like an old English living room with the leather, and the way these cars move is simply lovely!

If the RR stopped using oil it just needed a good running in of the engine as it was used mostly for short trips before.

Thanks for taking us along made me feel chilled to my bones, the last time I felt that way was in Oslo, closely followed by Helsinki. Actually, up a mountain in Switzerland during a blizzard after being avalanched off the slopes waiting for the train down was no fun as the station clock got down to minus 40 Celsius...
