Mehran Haq You’re testing the memory banks here. As I recall there was not. Most of the changes to the 930 happened when it was reintroduced to the US market, primarily for emissions regulations. It still had the four speed transmission. It was more civilized but it could still bite you in the rump if you got careless or ran out of talent. I believe the last year in the US was 1989 and that did have a five speed.

Ah this brings back memories! Especially the sound.. I remember borrowing an '85 4-speed version of the turbo from my employer in my early twenties. What a boy's dream. I remember the clutch being more like an on/off switch and the first time i took it out i spinned out right away on a wet road when the turbo kicked in while trying to get some power out of the engine. A few years ago i traced down the car to a Porsche club here in Holland and got the current owner's info. If i ever get the room to store it properly i will adopt her. I just have to remember to bring an extra pair of undies for my first drive.

Uncle Harry forgot to mention the burnt oil smell of the 930 engine after a hard boost or long drive.... This is the car that forever changed my view on transport. A car was no longer an object from getting from point A to B.... It was a expression of the Gentleman driving it. Sunday Morning waking up and peaking into the garage seeing my dad and my uncle's 930 3.3 Turbo & 3.2 Carrera standing there was a privilege. I fear i will never again experience an old 911 air cooled Sechszylinder engine in any form. Only now sitting here in my diesel euro box do i realize the privilege i had growing up as a kid

I had the opportunity to drive a 1989 911 Turbo with a 5 speed two years ago, it was a factory M505 SlantNose car, guards red, paint matched Fuchs wheels, just a stunning perfect car. I was working at the time, so I was incredibly careful, never really got it into boost much of at all in the short drive, but it was incredible. The sound, the look, the feeling, what a damn car! I can only dream that one day I will get the opportunity to drive one and really let the waste-gate crack open on a back road!!

Excellent video. Loved the detail showing the rev counter to demonstrate the turbo lag. The interior of a 911 is actually quite durable and yes the doors are heavy and feel solid. The pedals you get used to. They're part of the car's identity. The thermostat regulated ventilation system is not unique for the Turbo. It was in the non turbo cars as well. It was first introduced in 1978 models. The round door knobs were there to make it harder to break into the car. When the car is locked the doorlock pins disappear into the door trim. That way a thief would have to reach further into the car to open in. When I sit in a 911 I instantly feel "at home". The car is a bit strange compared to other more normal cars but everything in it is well thought through and well made. And when you hear the deep roar mixed with the sound of the aircooling fan it's wonderful. In spite of the non adjustable steering wheel the seating position is good. Thanks for a great video.

Fast forward 30+ years and I am the proud owner of a (similarly colored) Iris Blue 993. I've owned it 10 years and I still feel like I'm 'introducing' myself to 'her' every time I drive. Speaking of which, no matter where I go, surrounded by BMW's, Benz's, Audi's & similar ilk, my 993 *always* turns heads, yeah, even when it's parked. Keep your turbo, Harry, and *enjoy*!

The 911's until they became water-cooled were quite fun cars (mostly due to the unique engine sounds with the cams and timing chains and the enthralling exhaust note). My favorite is an early model, like a 1967 911S with the carbs (either Solex or Weber, not sure which were on that car, although I believe the latter). The 1975 Carerra RS cars are quite amazing, but the 930 is one which will always be the supreme example of the marque. I've never pulled the trigger on owning one, each situation had a different reason, but I've driven them and enjoyed every moment. Fun video with that late 930. The 911s are very expensive these days, but it seems the prices are dropping slightly. When you own one, you need to enjoy its quirks and the superb handling and noise. They should not be "garage queens" but driven as much as possible (cheaper to maintain that way, as well). Beautiful cars... classics.

Reminds me of my childhood. My dad had a 87 930, 89 930 targa turbo. 83 Ferrari 512bbi and a 89 lambo 25th anniversary countach. I loved them all. But the 930 was my favorite. Great memories

So you wouldn't subsitute it with a Lamborghini Aventador? I owned a Porsche 911 Carrera for about one year but it wasn't my first choice. It was an "impulse purchase".

Reverend Eslam laith bilbeisi Agreed. Monetary value aside, I would take a 993 turbo over an aventador.. Easily.. Not being trolls or anything, the 911 invokes way more of an enjoyable driver's experience for me rather than the aventador's "Look at me I'm rich bitch" personae.

bcsngan well said, when i look at most of today's rich and fabulous' garage and house pictures, you see multiple ferraris, a rolls royce, and a lambo, that just shows that these people only care about flash and cash, rather than the engineering feat of the vehicle. I understand its a matter of taste and opinion, but the rich have no taste, and no value for money... another example, i give a lot more respect and attention to someone driving a BMW M5 than someone in a gallardo.

Harry, thanks for another great insightful video, of course! Worked at a big US-city downtown Porsche store in 88-89. Staff was always driving these, the various models in the range. Truth be told, I saw you steamin' along the hedgerows talking, one-hand on wheel, and, looking at the lens, tach in 4k plus ...and still alive to return to the stable! We ALL trembled - to some degree- taking a delivery drive/customer introducing their 930...incidentally, that customer never even considered the TR or raging bull. A. Franklin said it best...R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Smokey Wilson Yeah that's a good call. I owned a pearlescent white (it was like a cream colour) Renault 5 turbo in the early 90's, I had lots of fun in that. Turbo had been tweaked so it was coming in very early, meaning even more fun but terrible mpg :)

This is such a great video of the 930. It's my dream to own one of these someday. Would you recommend getting a 70s non-intercooled one or a late model 930 like yours? Which one do you think is more fun to drive?
@harrysgarage
@harrysgarage 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Klein Best value are the 3.3litre Coupe versions, 78-88, a 5-speed like mine carries a slight premium. Early 3.0litre, non-intercooled 930 are now collector items and priced accordingly. They are a bit lighter than a 3.3 930 but the turbo delivery is even baggier. The only reason I'd pick one over a 3.3 is for investment reasons, rather than how it drives.

Dear Sir Harry, the very reason that the later famous Ferdinand Porsche thought of having an engine in the back of the car, is not - as you suggest - to have a compact power-unit and lots of interiorspace for the occupants, but... young Ferdinand was an apprentice engineer at the pre-war Tatra factory in Kopřivnice, in the region Moravia of TsechoSlovakia. Now situated in Czech Republic, near the border of Slovakia, and the region where my darling wife comes from. Ferdinand had a few very talented teachers at Tatra that were pioneers of building cars with air-cooled rear-engines, just think of the famous Tatra-plan. Not a shy person, Ferry 'borrowed' their designs in the pre-war years to present a 'KdF-wagen' ( Kraft-durch-Freude ) to a certain Mr. A. Hitler, himself a lover of automobiles. This Mr. H. gave permission to Mr. Porsche to start manufacturing prototypes of the KdF wagen, later to be well-known as the People's Car, or Volkswagen. The rest, as they say, is history and led in the end to the 911, of which I am a proud owner too! Mine is a 1982 Carrera SC, 3.0 and pre-G50 gearbox. Just some facts: Porsche GmbH paid patent fees to Tatra ( now Skoda) until 1972 I am told for using their basic designs. Ferdinand Porsche was born in - now - Vratislavice, before the war known as Maffersdorf. That is about 6 km. from our home in Liberec, CZ. His family Porsche tombe on the local cemetary is visited by me and some 911 friends every year. You are very kindly invited to come along next year with your gorgeous 911 Turbo. You'll love the driving here in Ceská Republika. Love your channel and way of no-nonsense presenting. Keep it up!

I have owned my 89 5 speed 930 for 24 years, it is an 89 with 38K. never been painted or driven in the rain. It is 2 from the showroom" condition. I drive it no more than 500 miles a year and enjoy every inch of it. The performance through the gears is outstanding, from a standing start not so. Oh guards red with two tone grey leather interior. Harry speaks with love and affection for the model, rightly so.

Great review. Ive had my '88 930 for 13yrs and I still mix up the sunroof switch for the mirror toggle switch. The opening/closing of a 930 door is something of legend with the sound it makes -- like a rifle bolt. I can assure everyone its not an urban myth. The 4-spds up through '88 were notchier than the G50, but the gears are so long you hardly have to shift. Third gear will take you from 30mph to 130mph.

The father of a friend of mine had a 1980 3.3 turbo 911. 4 speed manual that did 100km/h in 1st and 160km/h in 2nd. He used to let me drive it, believe it or not. Far and away the greatest driving experience I've ever had, even over his 2.7 Carrera that itself was huge fun but considerably different from the turbo. Happy memories.

I saw the promo video for this channel in which Harry said he's going to review all of his cars and amongst them was this 930 turbo. In the last few days I was actually asking myself what happened to his 911 and why he hasn't made a video about it. Glad to see that he finally found the time to do it, the 930 was the car that made porsche an icon in the 80's and it's directly responsible for what they are today. Happy to see a "owners perspective" on it, I was hoping for this video for a while now.

I had an MGB roadster with spoke wheels and chrome bumpers. It smelled great in the cockpit and under the bonnet too and on those evenings when the air is a little moister and denser it just felt so good to drive. Great for girls! A very pleasant drive rather than challenging but I know that I wouldn't have the talent to exploit or enjoy a 911.

I was lucky to drive one of these around for a few weeks back in the early 1990's. It was I believe the last 911 Turbo they made. It was RHD in minerva blue with cream leather and blue piping to match the exterior colour. Very Don Johnson! When that turbo cuts in I dare you not to grin from ear to ear! Awesome car. Loved it.
