The Alfa 8C is one of the most desirable Alfas ever created. Powered by a 450bhp, 4.7litre V8 and with a curvaceous body created out of carbon-fibre but what's it like to drive? Find out here..
Many thanks to classicmotorhu... for the loan of this car, where it is just gone up for sale.

@ZappoTan why Golf is a car? Golf is shoes box with engine! 😂
@tomwebb7091
@tomwebb7091 5 жыл бұрын
@ZappoTan Youre comparison of a Golf to this Alfa is strange to start with but for you to claim the Alfa is slower than a Golf R in a straight line is even dafter. Put simply youre talking bollocks. I owned a Maser GT 4.7S which is 435bhp and almost same engine as the 450bhp unit in this Alfa. The Maser, as Harry states, is over 200kg heavier and ironically i left my brothers 330bhp Golf behind in mine once over 100mph so this Alfa will easily leave a standard 300bhp Golf R behind in a straight line. Its not even getting close mate. Heavily modded Golf might. I agree on a B road the GolfR is indeed leaving this and the Maser behind but a Golf R is irrepressibly drab and dull and isnt even 1/10th as special as either the Alfa 8C or Maserati GT-S. In fact a nice early Maser GTS is about the same price as a Golf R 🤔...nuff said.

Harry, it would be great if you could get a 8C Spider to test. Alfa completely re-engineered the chassis as a result of the criticism given to the Competizione (which were built 3 years earlier). The Spider is wonderfully progressive, compliant, has fantastic ceramic brakes, and to some is even more beautiful - it is everything the coupe should have been. Was lucky enough to drive one for a day a few years back, it‘s now at the top of my lottery win list..

Nice review Harry. The 8C looks fantastic but it reminds me of the Ferrari 360CS. Single clutch and lots of carbon. Think I would go for the 360CS if I was spending £225k and wanted a classic car. However, Alfa really came good with the 4C, so much so that I bought one!

It's really curious how the market behaves. I understand this is a very special car and I love how it looks, but what I don't understand is the current value. I own a Maserati Gransport since 1 year, a car that you can buy now at 1/10 of this price. It is the same car? No. It is similar? Absolutely. The units made are not far, around 2500 globally, engine is the 4.2 (so "just" 400 hp...), same gear shift, great look (in and out), 2 additional sits and bigger boot and better handling, as it was adjusted from the original coupe and was really appreciated in all reviews when it was new...So why this costs now so much? I don't know? Would you like to live similar experience? You can do it. If you are not a collector and you just want to enjoy driving, look somewhere else, there are many wonderful cars out there, specially at the prices you have in the UK!

@@merlin51h84 the 8C engine sounds amazing you can not compare the V8 to the Bi Turbo 6 but the 6 does sound great and is the best sounding 6 out there i feel. the two 8C i worked on we remapped the ECU, first ever in the world to do these, made a custom air intake plenum with BMC filter and we removed and fabricated a resonator delete on the exhaust. these two cars sounded incredible i wish i had access to them again today to shoot video. this video posted here is great because i remember driving these 8C new and i was scratching my head at how bad and rough they drove for the money. the progression of technology is staggering in 10 years with the automotive world and we see this in the new Giulia. Alfa also at this time did not have the money, facility and dire need to revamp the brand to enter the USA like FCA has now done. The 8C will remain a timeless rare classic for its lifetime regardless of how bad it drives to our modern standards.

I'd reckon that many of us does really like that analogue or even kind of brutal ("klonk klonk klonk") feel what those early automated manual gearboxes gives us. Gallardo, Murcielago and Aventador are the best examples. It brings huge of sense of occasion compared to modern days super ultimate seamless PDK -stuff, "proot-proot-proot" At least I enjoy my Ferrari 360 F1 (automated manual) much, much more than I enjoyed my previous & much newer Porsche (PDK) 911.

Well, I guess the car is just not as brutal as its cousin, but from what I saw in this video the harsh ride actually gives a sense of real rawness ... which in my book is something very good. Plus acceleration is not exactly bad. Probably if you are someone who drives many different exotics on a daily basis and have an access to stuff like Senna and GT2 RS then maybe this car will feel a little clumsy, but apart from that this looks just enought.

Harry communicates better than nearly any reviewer I can think of... without adding Chris Harris' driving, but that's a totally different approach. I thoroughly enjoy them both. Harry's comments regarding the looks of this Alfa are right on point. It looks spectacular; the drive-ability is another thing entirely. Maybe the target buyer is where the real difference lies... if you'd buy it for the looks, exhaust note, and the gorgeous design, you're probably the target buyer. If you're much more a "driver-buyer," the looks don't rank as high as everything working properly and being able to "fly-it" down the road to your heart's content. But then, that's not often the experience in high-end Italian sports cars. It seems your choices are Gorgeous/Quirky or Gorgeous/Technically-Competent. It's very rare to find both in one car, regardless of the origin.

In many ways, the 8C summarizes high rank and emotion Italian automobiles: quite compromised on the overall and flawed, but certainly no compromise on styling and sound (no fake farts coming from those pipes, no stupid playstation noise coming from the speakers, can ya hear that, Jag and BMW ?).

I am a bit disappointed in how Harry started this video. I know it's a commonly used tactic to mock something of which you are aware that has not achieved the hoped popularity, but instead of throwing some words around.. I would like to hear from Harry why he thinks a 166 is a 3 star car and a sea of nothing? The Alfa 166 is actually the Alfa that was a really good car and could actually easily be matched with the E39 if not outperforming the e39. The 3,2 Busso has one of the most loved and refined engine characteristics, lovely power and great reliability. The 4 cyl petrols were good but not a match for the Busso V6 and the JTD diesels were probably the best in it's class. Interior quality is really good as well as driving characteristics for a fwd. Can't just bash that car without any argument. The 166 was so poorly sold in the uk because of extreme depreciation but not for any other reason except for maybe the general public opinion about Alfa which is far away rom the thruth.

The Alfa 8c is not comparable to a 599 or 458 speciale.... It's in a class of its own, it's the kind of car you have wet dreams about...you don't settle for an "equivalent" car that's a better deal in terms of performance when you have the ability to get an 8c.... Tell you what, in the early 70's to mid 80's my dad owned 7 Alfas, consisting of 3 Alfettas 1.8 (one was for spare parts), 1 Alfetta 2000, 1 GT Junior and 1 GTV 2000 plus 1 Berlina. He also owned 240Z. All the Alfas were sold in the late 80's to early 90's but the 240Z remains up till now. The 240 Z was much more reliable than all the Alfas, period. I bought a low mileage 156 2.5 V6 while working in the middle east. One day the so called selesspeed would not switch gear and I was stuck in second. Never ever again buy any Alfa's product. Almost 4 years now with the XC60 - wife;s car -and never have any issues.

Very informative and enjoyable too. Shame the 8C was not sorted. I wager it’d be worth double again, had it been great dynamically. But I’d still have one in convertible form: slightly nicer to drive, almost as good to look at and get to hear the engine scream even more!

This car is stunning, I remember seeing it back in 2006 at the British Motor Show, looked amazing in that metallic red which i believe they mixed gold flakes into. Have always wanted a curvy alfa in that color ever since (an 8C would be amazing, but the paint colour on an alfa with similar styling cues would be the next best thing). Also, about the interior and ride, I kinda feel that's what defines it as an Alfa, part of the italian cars charm is that theyre not perfect. It looks and sounds amazing, that was the important bit, if you want something put together properly buy a german car, if you want something with a smooth ride, buy a french car. And, its Alfa, not Ferrari, it would be a bit weird if the Alfa performed as well as the Ferrari (espesh at that original price point).

A beautiful but truly awful car. I took delivery of 1 of 4 produced in yellow in 2009 after a 5 year wait. It follows every rut and undulation in the road, meaning you have to be on top of it all the time, at speed that can be quite frightning and very tiring. It's like a grasshopper on speed. I would say this car was designed for the track not the road, the ride is awful The noise, it sounds fabulous around town or on the backroads but after an hour and a half on the motorway I couldn't wait to get out of it and give my ears a rest. Parallel parking with this gearbox is impossible, it will not creep, you have to rev a bit then brake as it lurches backwards or forwards before hitting the other parked cars. At 6 months and 700 miles a compulsory service and oil change £1250.00! After 2 years ownership I wasn't sorry to see it go.

mymaseraticoupe it’s not a daily driver and that obviously went over your head. Parallel parking a sports or super car should never come up when you’re talking about how good the car is. That’s like buying a family sedan and then complaining that it doesn’t accelerate like a Huracan

A member of my AROC has one. These need some suspension sorting but can be done. Biggest issue is ALFA told owners they will not supply any parts that aren't found on other cars in current production. If body panels need replacement you are out of luck....so now an expensive garage queen. Love ALFAs myself. Had 70 spider for over 40 years...and raced a GTV in SCCA. Currently have 4C LE which is a fantastic car. Not practical for anything except putting a big smile on your face.

Beautiful car but I think people are blinded by the good looks and the brand, 220+k for a 10 year old not even super car, with a bad ride, bad gearbox, no practicality and more weight and less performance than it should have? It just seems like lunacy, if they were 110k new I wouldn't want to pay more than 70k now. Ironically the price has gone up because of the rarity but they are rare because they weren't that good. Crazy how that works really.

They were never rare because they were a bad car, they are in fact just rare because there were so few built, it may not be the greatest car of all time but it is very special and is very collectible and will be even more so in the future. I for one love the 8c, so much so that when I visited the local Fiat /Alfa dealer who had two sitting out the back of their showroom with rusted brake disks and covered in green tree sap, I made a point of going in and asking some spotty salesman if had any idea of what these were and why are they left rotting outside next to a bunch cheap ass Fiat Puntos!
