Woodturning - Can Pine Be Pretty .... Again?!

So after the success of my two other "Can Pine Be Pretty" videos I wanted to make a third but change the species of pine (not 100% sure what it is), and create a more interesting design. Unfortunately, the wood didn't allow for the design I wanted, the pine had been sitting in the elements for too long and had lots of water ingress. Because of this I put the project on hold for three months and came back to it once it had dried so I could look at it with a fresh perspective. I thought the best way to salvage the piece was to use epoxy resin, it would strengthen the wood and give it a more beautiful finish.
Let me know what you think of the epoxy. Should I use more on the channel, or do you prefer more traditional woodturning?
The bowl is sanded to 7000 grit and finished with Danish oil on the wood, and a buffed finish on the epoxy. The bowl is 215mm diameter, 90 wide, and approximately 70 deep.
Let me know what you think!

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

In my personal experience, turning with slightly duller tools after a couple of turns still feels ok and doesn't have bad repercussions on the piece. But I try to sharpen every 3 to 5 pieces depending on the time i spend on them aswell and the hardness of the woods. Thick turning tools hold up quite well.

I think that settles it. If you start out with a nicely spalted piece, dry it gradually over 3 months, submerge it in resin and turn most of it into sawdust, then yes - pine can indeed be pretty. ;-) And if you add the talent of Harry Smith it can evidently become a beautiful masterpiece!

Great work .

Harry this is the most gorgeous bowl I have seen in quite some time. Wish I could own one of your pieces, but alas I am disabled and only get a few dollars a month. I just wanted you to know that you are an amazing woodworker and what you make is timeless. ❤😎🙃 Your Florida friend, Dotty

Dummy here, but what does moisture do to the wood that makes it difficult to lathe?
@HarrySmithShorts
@HarrySmithShorts 2 жыл бұрын
No problem Cudwieser, wet wood can tear out, be difficult to sand smooth for a nice finish. It is also prone to warping and splitting when finally dryingout ... 🪵😃👍

Beautiful work as always! Love that you used resin colours that complement the wood instead of bright unnatural colours as we often see in other wood-resin turnings. Just disappointed that you didn’t keep the center cup for serving dip with some veggies and chips in the outside ring! 😆
