Neil Gaiman is most definitely a Classic Who fan, the little cube message box harkens all the way back to The War Games and with how the Doctor contacts them. His exploration of the TARDIS is very atypical of the Classic era but without the clear budget issues of repeating corridors or an abandoned hospital and of course his villain has that Classic Who flair of a bombastic voice with a huge degree of intrigue.

“You gave me hope and you took it away, that is enough to make anyone dangerous, GOD knows what it’ll do to me.” Smith delivered this line really well. Bone chilling. This is one of my favourite episodes, and it is one of those you could see working with almost all of the Doctors (including Classic). Something of note is the end, when the TARDIS sends herself off, she did not engage the “Blue Stabilisers” like River did in Series 5, which shows that unlike other TARDISes she won’t settle for a smooth existence, she instead prefers the bumpy, and often loud, journey that she is on with her thief.
@LiveHedgehog3 жыл бұрын
I've always found that "Blue Stabilisers" line really stupid. It implies every TARDIS we see take off in Classic Who also had the brakes on. And in the first episode with the Master, the Timelord that visits the Doctor makes the same sound when he appears. I choose to ignore that line River says, as it contradicts Classic Who quite a lot, and was done is a shoddy attempt to make River seem knowledgeable.

@@TheDanishGuyReviews I only have one other possible reason for them existing. Since the Doctor's TARDIS is older, and that model could possibly be modified to train younger timelords, they could act as stabilisers like on a kid's bike. 6:38 funnily enough. I had no idea that this conversation about “He was a big fella weren’t he?” And showing the arm with the snake tattoo was literally the man the Doctor was reminiscing about at the start of the episode. No wonder he got so mad, not only has he been deceived, but he’s literally listening to auntie and uncle mock his old friend while waving his dismembered arm around like a toy. That’s kinda fked.

0:03 the name is a reference to an intentionally deceptive Classic Who title. Back in the day (really wish I knew what era it was), Doctor Who had a leak in the production team. To find out who it was, the producers told a select few people that they had a story titled 'The Doctor's Wife' to narrow down who it could be. If it was leaked, they would know. At least that was the story I was told.

I will always adore this episode. I honestly believe that this is the one moment where The Doctor didn’t care at all what happened to his companions. Throughout the episode you get to watch as The Doctor’s care for anyone else’s safety slowly run out, with all his concern being consumed with an uncontrollable desire to avenge House’s victims. The most depressing part of it all is that all of this is in hope of forgiveness. Just look at how quickly The Doctor’s patience ran out at the end, look at how he is clearly out of fucks to give, seeing the “God” of this universe as a joke. The way The Doctor replies to House’s endless attempts to intimidate him, for example the petty line as House brags saying “fear me, I’ve killed hundreds of Timelords.” Only to get the emotionless reply of “fear me, I’ve killed all of them.” In that moment, you get to see The Doctor as he’s willing so sacrifice his own life in a desperate attempt of forgiveness. It is truly horrifying.

Probably my fave New Who episode, and certainly demonstrated how good Matt could be with a great script. It has pretty much everything contained in what is quite a claustrophobic setting and ALL the performances shine (pretty much had me looking up other shows with Suranne Jones, her face conveys so much emotion). Humour, darkness, horror, emotion - the complete package! It made Nightmare in Silver that much more disappointing but I'm guessing/hoping that wasn't Gaiman's fault.

I think his plans were yet again shut down because of budget reasons. Also because at that time, Matts doctor was at his most flanderised and the two kids couldn’t act but needed to be in the story. Btw, I actually like it quite a bit but can see it’s flaws.
