This is an excellent short film. Its illuminating. It shows how homelessness can start; the value of kindness and support; and how dangerous it is to live out on the street. This film should be shown in schools, annually, from middle school (7th grade), through college and graduate school. This film generates compassionate understanding, and that's a lot.

I was homeless at one point and time. It was my husband, myself, and my dog. We were all living in one car along with all of our backpacks and things we had. But my homelessness wasn't because of drugs, or that I had gotten evicted. Although, with absolutely $0 in our pockets, deciding to leave all the stress away at home, we traveled in a car across the US during a pandemic. I have to say the trip definitely wasn't easy. Being on the streets you'd have to deal with a variety of obstacles: finding changes of clothes, CLEAN socks were such an issue and sometimes you'd have to resort to stealing food... Altogether with not being able to shower up until you panhandled for enough money to get a night's stay at a cheap motel.. It was hard to keep up hygiene, and I myself like to keep very clean when I can. Luckily we weren't without a car, so we were mobile fortunately safer with the whip than out on the street. But having to sleep in a car brought along a whole other set of issues- police, nosy people, and crackheads all at once, so my advice to anyone sleeping in their car right now - park and rides are your best friend. Don't stay at Walmart parking lots. You could either get kicked out or encounter people trying to rob you. Also, try to always carry around pepper spray with you just in case. I remember my husband ended up finding a job up in Sacramento, CA at a restaurant. The employer was so understanding about the situation, but get ready for a rough patch of 2 weeks. Unfortunately we weren't able to keep the job. But to all employers - give the homeless a chance. And to all people who might encounter someone asking for spare change - Don't be afraid to give. It could really help someone out, and in most cases that money isn't going directly to drugs or alcohol if its someone who actually wants the help. I am now writing this in my own house with my husband and dog. I have never felt more proud to have my own little spot. But I never forget all those people who helped me get through living in my car. I hope if you are reading this and you are considered homeless, remember to stay strong and don't give in. God bless whoever is reading this, stay safe!

It can, and does. My kids and I have been in a one room hotel room for almost two years. My lease ended during covid. I was unemployed because my job shut down, and getting by, but to sign a new lease, my landlord raised my rent & I could not afford it while on unemployment. Putting everything we own in storage and coming here was all I could do. Been living out of a suitcase with the kids (and cats) for far too long. I miss my stuff. I miss privacy. I miss feeling like I am giving my kids what they need. It is absolutely soul crushing. Apartments here want income = to 3x rent. If your credit isn't great, nobody approves your application (while still taking hundreds of $$ just to apply). The US is a terrible place if you are not wealthy & connected.

I’m tired of this ugly stigma that’s placed on all the homeless. Every person has their story. I have my story too. It’s rough out there. I know. I’m homeless too. I never experimented on illegal drugs, I’m not taking illegal drugs, I never broke the law & I never was arrested or detained. The worst crime I did was getting a traffic ticket. I’m human just like everyone else. Also, I’m not a crazy person that I’m stereotyped to be. Everyone has their story and so do I.

When I was homeless with children we created a sort of stick house around our tent in the Salinas river bottom with limbs and brush and seriously most people could not see us as they walked by. We also camouflaged the top of our tent with Willow branches. You can often feel like a refugee in your own country just for trying to stay together and stay alive. My heart still skips a beat when I hear a helicopter. My biggest fear was being discovered and my children being taken away because we could not find a place to call home ... no rest besides the few days a month we could afford to rest at a motel. The shelters where frightening for children. Seriously scary. I had someone place a bunch of medication that could of killed my babies in their cots so they would try to eat them , Twice. In SLO county CA.I filled a report about it then they treated us as an enemy. We left and tried our best to stay in camp grounds, motels and to hide. Thank God we met a woman who gave us a place to call home.

Cried at the end which was a strong impactful reminder that until off the street homeless people are not safe. Some of the most humble and caring people I have met were those I gave food/or money to. Even if I have nothing to give sometimes I talk with them. It takes real humility to ask for help. I pray the Lord Jesus soften my heart to have more compassion towards others.

Everyone is NOT just one mistake away from being on the streets. The fact that many people are NOT one step away from being homeless is why so many people don't help the homeless. The people with the hardest hearts haven't and will never experience homelessness. People who have never and will never experience homelessness look many places. A hard hearted person looks ahead to respond to what impacts their world and no one else's. They look up to strive toward their goals. The look behind them to see what their competition is doing. They look side to side to see who is passing them by. The Bubble that is privilege is all about reflecting YOU, YOUR NEEDS and NOTHING ELSE! People with the hardest hearts are those who haven't and will never experience homelessness. Those who haven't and will never experience homelessness, WILL NEVER LOOK DOWN BECAUSE, THERE IS NOTHING FOUND THEY DEEM WORTHY OF SEEING WHEN LOOKING DOWN! When you look down their is nothing to see but the painful suffering and often ugly reality of poor peoples lives. Why bother looking at anything or anyone who is BENEATH YOU! By looking down you only see all the refuse of society both human and material. By looking down you see the brutal reality that lay beyond that carefully maintained bubble that is yourself. By looking down you see clearly used syringes, alcohol containers, broken hopes, broken dreams, dead eyed children, innocent trusting faces beaten black and blue. Worst of all only by looking down do you really see the multitudes of broken people some alive some murdered for PERVERTED BLOOD SPORT AS SHOWN HERE! I know this is true because, I've lived all my long life ALWAYS having ENOUGH MONEY to keep a roof over my head, my lights on, my heat functioning, my refrigerator full, my phone active and more. I've known WANT well ENOUGH because, I'm not rich but, I've never once in life known the true nature of NEED because, while not RICH I'VE ALSO NEVER BEEN TRULY POOR! To know need you must look down, because TRUE DESPERATE NEED exists at your at your heels, shivering in doorways, laying on cardboard, invisible on park benches, lost in a mentally ill hellscape. They don't call the poorest among us DOWN TRODDEN WITHOUT GOOD REASON. Too see the down trodden one must first LOOK DOWN. TRUE NEED has a soft voice barely audible over the din of your own Fast, Fun, Full & Furious world so far above. The world of TRUE NEED exists on the level of the soiled hub cap, the hard foundation edge, the unwelcoming building ledge, the pigeon, the sea gull, the foul exhaust pipe, the wind swept debris, the shimmering puddle, the passer's by spit or urine, the forlorn blanket that too often marks a lonely side walk grave. The people who ignore the homeless MOST EFFECTIVELY IN FACT are those LEAST LIKELY to fall into the never world of poverty below. The people who ignore homelessness are those completely oblivious to reality of tenuous lives lived at their heels. A WORLD OF PEOPLE REMAIN INVISIBLE BECAUSE FEW FORCE THOSE LIKE ME WHO SOAR MINDLESSLY ABOVE IT ALL TO LOOK DOWN! I know of the existence and privations of homelessness ONLY because, I had friends who loved me enough to force me to LOOK DOWN and INTERACT HONESTLY with a painful brutal ugly cruel sadistic reality far different than my own. Privilege is a Bubble. Unfortunately not all people living in the Bubble that is personal privilege are lucky enough to have strong friends armed with pins unafraid to use them! Mark I CANIS LUPUS dedicate this missive to your great works and all those homeless souls who suffer, endure and too often perish because, SO FEW IN OUR SOCIETY DARE TO LOOK DOWN!

Great video! One would think there'd be a happy ending to this but tragedy occurs repeatedly with the homeless. With drug addiction & mental illness going on, not many will take a gamble by helping like the store owner did. At most, they might give them food & shoo them away. I used to pick the dead homeless off the streets & have learned to have more compassion for those still struggling to survive.
@daisychain30073 жыл бұрын
This is a wicked world and homeless people are frequently regarded as parasites or scum. Homelessness can happen to anyone and we should not look down on people just because we have a roof over our heads.ec One day, the tables may turn and we may become homeless and the homeless may finally afford a home. Nothing in life is certain.

I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless over for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the Apartment Complex I was living at was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance was given the option to move out or pay full market value rent. I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors. I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit. I have been trying to get help, and have not much success. I was accepted for Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I am now in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised. I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost by a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts. I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. Just a few days ago I spilled a large cup of scalding hot coffee onto my leg while making it. I had jeans with the knees ripped open and two layers of thermal underwear which were soaked and continued to cook my leg and ankle until I was able to get inside and remove them. I wound up with very serious burns, and had to go to the ER on Christmas Eve. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center for help, but am ineligible. I served 6 years in The Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school. I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice....

Affordable housing is a human right.
@michaelfriscia81663 жыл бұрын
Where exactly is that written or implied? And is this like free healthcare where it's supposedly a right but in order for you to have it you have to force somebody else to provide it? That's not a right that's an entitlement and who exactly provides this entitlement are you going to do it? nobody's stopping you have at it open your house turn it into a homeless shelter but please don't ask me to when you're not willing. Oh and one more thing what do you mean by affordable? Can you define it should it just be whatever price someone can pay if they chose to should it be something that's based on a percentage of income or should it be a set dollar amount depending on the market value as it currently is and what happens when somebody chooses to instead of paying the rent perhaps purchase drugs instead do they still have a right to housing or have they given up that right and exchanged it for the right to be high? Or perhaps lazy or undisciplined?
@michaelfriscia81663 жыл бұрын
@Stay EZ My Friends and that would be okay except what do I get out of it these people are not exactly the most functional productive members of society to begin with, to me it's like they're a bunch of children who never grew up even though their bodies aged into what we would call adulthood their set of mind and psychology their level of responsibility never grew beyond that of a small child and that explains their give me give me give me attitude and logic. they have never a day in their life provided for someone else and yet they expect society to continue to provide for them they expect to have the same rights as functional productive members of society but they do not help uphold or maintain that society, in fact they drag it to its very knees.
