Laurie Baker was the pioneer of low cost architecture in Kerala. His style and principles are now emulated by a number of architects. However his message of avoiding excesses and harmony with nature needs to reach the masses, it is high time. If he is still alive and constructing buildings these days, most of the engineers and contractors would screw him up for his low budget ideas, as they cannot harvest considerable profit out of it.

And what makes you think builders in the 1970s,80s and 90s didn't try "screw" him up? Baker was physically attacked several times, threats on his life were made but he did not retreat one step. That's what makes his special to us in the architectural community. He had the guts to stand by his beliefs. You're right that they couldn't make money. In fact they refused to give him masons, carpenters, etc when he started so he went out and trained his own!
