Day 7's problem is that Puppet Combo can't fully pursue a fresh idea without falling back on their own tropes. Notice that the game loses its luster as soon as the game starts retreading old ground- faceless murderer with a knife, crazed psycho, friendly human whose just immediate fodder for psycho, and endless running around blindly. In some of the other Puppet Combo games these factors have worked, but in this one it derails the only part of the game that was mildly interesting. Relying instead of blind maze running until a story beat is hit. I feel like this is a similar issue to the recent Blair Witch game. Where the Blair Witch starts out promising and turns into Layers of Fear 3, Days 7 starts out promising and turns into Power Drill Massacre 2.

I know this video is like a year old, but I really enjoyed this in a masochistic sort of way. I think puppet combo did exactly what they wanted to do, which was to capture the atmosphere of the backrooms. At first, it'll make you panic a bit. You'll scramble and freak out a bit. But once you settle, things don't get better. Instead of that scary panic feeling, you feel an ever encroaching madness and dread. Disoriented. Claustrophobic. The noise doesn't stop. No rhyme or reason, no day or night. Rationale breaks down. There's nothing different. There's no hope. And the fucking noise. A deep, hateful irritability sets in. The backrooms drives you to an evil, hateful madness. Puppet combo captured a little slice of that for us to experience. That's what this is and I applaud them for it.

The Backrooms really isn’t a concept suited for being a video game. Everything you need to add to make a game interesting ruins what makes this concept unnerving in the first place. Well the original idea of "The Backrooms" isn't supposed to have anything else to it other than the rooms. That was the whole idea of the horror of it, that you're forever stuck in an endless maze of empty, bage coloured, smelly, drab rooms with only the incessant humming of the fluorescent lights to accompany you. It was supposed to be a kind of "inside joke" idea for people who have worked horrible, soul crushing, office jobs that make you want to kill yourself. And like you said, that's not an idea well suited for the medium of video games.
@thrackerzod60975 жыл бұрын
@@Bulletproof222 The original creepypasta does mention something else being there, personally I interpret that as paranoia, the fear of something being there, and the writers mind filling in the blanks, over anything else. But I still think the soul crushing paranoia could make for an absolutely wonderful VR experience, not so much a regular game though.

This game definitely has its issues but I actually love this game to bits, and I genuinely think it’s one of the best visions for a backrooms game. I LOVE the monster for this game and think it’s one of puppet combo’s best designed monsters for sure. The sound design is hit or miss for me but the visuals all of the way through are very intriguing, especially the city at the beginning (Another example of puppet combos expertise at urban environments). As for the story, I like the twist done for this vision of the backrooms, I personally dislike the thought that the backrooms are just a different realm that dives into multiple others, and seeing it as a sort of purgatory where horrors of your past hunt you is chilling and just perfect for the environment and atmosphere that the backrooms entail. A genuinely near-perfect game imo.

This was creepy as hell to me. I used to work night shift maintenance in a huge shopping mall/office building; I'm talking big enough to span 2 city blocks (it was bridged/connected above the street) and 5 stories tall. It was built in the 1960s and had been renovated, split up and reconfigured on the upper office levels so many times that there were tons of disused "back rooms" almost exactly like this. Some carpeted, some not, either bare drywall or actually very similar old beige wallpaper; no furniture or objects. Just halls and rooms leading to more empty rooms. All had a damp musty smell and that same drop ceiling with the fiber tiles and fluorescent lights. Few were big enough to get actually seriously lost in for more than maybe 5 minutes, but even 5 minutes seems plenty long enough when it's late at night and you don't yet know your way around. I always found them eerie, mostly because they were isolated enough to be dead silent except your own footsteps. Eventually I got used to them because it was part of my job to check through them regularly for leaks or other issues, and because they were a convenient shortcut between a lot of places that would otherwise take forever going through the million partitions and locked doors of the offices for all the companies that rented space on the upper floors. Some areas also had doors that opened into blank walls and "stairways to nowhere" that ended in ceilings or walls, from all the renovating and it being apparently cheaper and easier to build around stuff like that and just conceal it rather than remove it. Lucky for me, nothing ever happened in those areas but security and I scaring the shit out of each other now and then, especially in the carpeted sections where you couldn't hear anyone until you just about ran into them.

maybe an unpopular opinion, but damn it was good? a lot of people in the comments say it was the worst puppet combo game, but to me it felt like the best one (maybe bc i'm not a fan of slashers, who knows) felt bizzare and surreal in every right way; sounds were atrocious, but they felt right in this game, fitting. maybe character interactions were silly, but, well, it also gives a surreal vibe to everything. loved the metallic section. the ending, though, felt kinda silly, but maybe there really are multiple - gonna look for them. thanks for playing, John!!

I liked the look of the game from the start, but it slowly started to grind on me. I hate maze/looping games. I understand the idea its meant to make you panic and scare you, which in this game it did, esp claustrophobic. Which is all fair and good for a short period, but for a whole game to be like this, is gets old, boring, less fun and more frustrating. And that back ground sound ruin the game even more, it was never ending, which i kinda understand why they wanted it in there, but it became less effective the longer it went on, bit like a crappy horror game with continous jump scaries. I dont know maybe, i just didn't get the game, but this felt poor for a Puppet Combo game.

I like the game but it could be more interesting. Perhaps there could be an exit or a fire that burns down the walls and you end up escaping but then the monsters haunt you for life and every night after you escape you have dreams of the backrooms.

@@LeaderOfTheLostSouls Just because a game is true to its source material doesn't mean it can get by being a boring game, that's not how game development works; it's supposed to be a transformative adaptation, not a literal (not if you want it to be well received, that is).

I didn't think it was that bad. It had some short comings and the audio (I hope it was just glitched) was rough. But overall though it had an interesting atmosphere. What's interesting is how puppet combo tries to do new things and gets bashed by everyone in the comments of this video. Like, maybe puppet combo doesn't want to make the same exact game every time. Seems like everyone took it personal that they didn't like it. I just kinda like these more experimental games by puppet combo and feel like in time they could get better, so it's just interesting to see people so dismissive.
@LeaderOfTheLostSouls3 жыл бұрын
@ILikeToBurfferAlways I agree too, I enjoyed this game overall a lot cuz I liked the concept of the backrooms and enjoyed their take on it. I watched others play it first like 8-BitRyan so I was taken aback by John’s disappointment and him missing the main villain the whole time but I cut him slack cuz he doesn’t like maze games and he has some good points yet I don’t always agree with him. But the worst was the people in the comment section who were so negative and dismissive of the game as if there’s no positives. It was sad to see tbh.
@LeaderOfTheLostSouls3 жыл бұрын
I think people are just a bit too negative overall Like the atmosphere is good very immersive with the concept of the backrooms, the gameplay is close enough and has its own touches. The empty endless maze with the buzzing of the lights as you helplessly try to find a way out with glitches and no clipping within the backrooms as you go deeper leading to areas that vary with layout or slight designs at first dropping clues on what happened to past people their brutal deaths, and the mystery of the missing gun in the back of your mind. Then having a dream about how you first went into this realm giving some clues on the threat then having the world around you get corrupted as that same tall man with the long fingernails chase you till you pass out from lack of water. Then to have someone save you a beacon of hope that you aren’t alone but also understanding that it can have many people from anywhere yet you’ve only seen Sally, the dead cop, and the little girl giving the idea that most died from the Man with the long fingernails or someone else, the need for finding the little girl to get out is even greater. You’ve seen a deeper layer a metallic area that could be a way out but lost it so your hope is there yet shaken. Only for you to lose the little girl again and being set back to the beginning the hopelessness is trying to crush you but Sally keeps you hopeful barely only for the human killer in the Backrooms who killed the cop and took his gun to kill Sally your only life line to hope so you are crushed with your sanity waning being chased by this killer you are desperate enough to put the strange mask on to kill him which allows you to be invisible for an easy kill. Then days later you are dying of thirst and starvation without any hope after losing the one who gave it and killing someone meanwhile the Man with the Long Fingernails watches you to see you lose it resorting to cannibalism too and using the mask to kill whoever you find having lost yourself in mind and body within the backrooms. It’s a chilling, tense, roller coaster imo like it does the backrooms justice in their own way, the atmosphere fits the concept well like the noises can be annoying but that’s part of the backrooms it’s supposed to drive you man and distract you so it is hard to balance it so it’s not too much, the saturation of the surroundings makes sense cuz the character is nearing his limit so he’s gonna pass out which he does, the slight changes to the environment are nice at first then sudden changes like when being chased or finding a new area gives some variation that fits with their interpretation of the concept, the inclusion of others in it makes sense but it isn’t flooded with people to take away from the isolation it gives it more depth with the dead people adding mystery and tension, the girl Sally is your hope and change with the cannibal being the last straw driving him to madness, the little girl a bit of hope and mystery always out of reach, the Man with the long fingernails a mysterious threat, and the metallic layer being a mysterious place that gives possible hope which was only a tease for variation and world building, it makes you flustered but it isn’t always a bad thing it’s just hard to balance it so it doesn’t go too far, and etc. Imo I can’t really do this game justice with my words atm But of course it could be better and somethings are flawed like the Man with the long fingernails is too slow and doesn’t kill you really so it lessens the threat, the sounds and the saturation can be annoying, it is bad for those who don’t like maze games like John, it’s story isn’t explored enough, and etc. Yet I think it gets too much hate and people are a bit too dismissive of its positives. Like I do like the idea and concept of the Backrooms so that helps and I try to focus to be immersed so I enjoy it more but I’m not the only one that can appreciate the game like other people in the comment section or KZbinrs like 8-BitRyan were enjoyable to watch play it cuz he was more into it. But I love to watch John too and his unique style or views, I still enjoyed his let’s play on this I was only annoyed that he somehow missed the Man with the long fingernails tbh and I get it isn’t his type of game cuz he doesn’t like maze games so I cut him slack yet he makes the video still enjoyable. This along with the Glass Staircase gets a bit too much hate for being longer and slower, being different to their other games cuz they tried to touch upon different concepts they wanted to play with, the Glass Staircase had so much going for it too but while neither is the best yet I don’t think they are the weakest games they made, it is hard for me to put their games down cuz I enjoy them all tho tbh lol

Honestly aside from the nonstop looping audio, I really enjoyed this one. I like the creepy pasta pocket dimension idea, tries to bend your mind a little bit ya know! How anyone could randomly pop in there and one just so happened to be a crazy cannibal! It could happen 😂

Controversial opinion: I think this game is great. It represents exactly what the Backrooms are meant to be: A repetitive, mind-numbing series of rooms and hallways with no end in sight... And the constant noise in the background makes you feel like you're slowly going insane. It's immersive and brilliant in that sense :P
@snowblind95515 жыл бұрын
The build-up at the beginning was cool, and the ending twist was cool, but the middle was boring and repetitive. There were no chases or hide-and-seek moments. The past three Puppet Combo games have all been like this.
@TimSlee15 жыл бұрын
I like the concept of this game where you meet up with other people stuck in the backrooms instead of just wandering around lonely but the sound effects and visual effects are headache inducing and the story was half-assed for a puppet combo game. Also, the introduction of that cannibal guy towards the end of the game was just a terrible idea, there are entities that roam the backrooms, they could've made it so that one of them killed Sally.

You know, the thing with the Backrooms is that they're what you would expect to see if you clipped through a wall _in an office._ I mean, that's obviously the intended aesthetic, right? The gross beige walls, the moldy carpet, the fluorescent lights that hum just a little too loudly...it's like you're exploring a corporate office that was abandoned thirty years ago. So why do you fall into the Backrooms from a subway station in this game? It doesn't make sense for an office environment to exist in or near a subway. Actually, it would have been pretty cool if they extended the concept by having you fall into a Backrooms-esque subway nightmare. You could have, like, big open station areas with unreadable gibberish signs, and train tunnels where the track ends fifteen feet past the boarding area and there's just solid concrete. You climb up the stairs and into...another station. Maybe this one has a single passenger car on one track that plays the whole embarking/disembarking message on loop and the doors open and close every thirty seconds. Then you hear a train roll by downstairs, coming then going. But how is that possible if the tracks terminated just past the tunnels? See, there's some serious potential in the concept of the Backrooms, especially if you aren't just looking to emulate the original story one-to-one. But hey, this is PuppetCombo. I seriously doubt that they have any interest in making original content.
@phil-po6qy5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this could have been made up to be fairly better. I don't see why the character had to go to the subway anyway, they could've just kept him in the office and had him fall through a floor or something. I don't think Puppet Combo handled it poorly, in fact I quite enjoyed the game, I just think it could have been better.
@BarkingPup5 жыл бұрын
The *idea* of the backrooms has soooo much potential. Especially if you look up what clipping through yer average vidya game can be like. But it's like Puppet Combo went with the most boring version of it. Heck, even a generic office backroom could be better. The same plant that seems to be around every corner. The buzz of fluorescent lights, that one freaking light that flickers. Half empty offices, like people forgot to take everything with them. Meeting rooms with endless PowerPoint presentations and disembodied awkward chuckles. The stain in the roof of the break room that grows every day. The janitor no one ever sees except out of the corner of your eye at night. The parking garage. Etc etc.

@andrew-paulclements15025 жыл бұрын
@@CJ-lr4uq Well technically being against Jesus does not necessarily make you for Satan. For Example, I'm sure depending on how they interpreted Aristotle, many ancient Greeks would view Jesus as one extreme to avoid, Satan being the other extreme to avoid. For clarification, Aristotle advocated avoiding Vice, but Vices were not just lacking a quality but also having too much of it. He advocated what he called the "Virtuous Mean" So if a person followed Aristotle's ethics, and interpreted Christ as being just another extreme, then they would theoretically be both against Jesus, but also against Satan cause Satan is just the other extreme.
@CJ-lr4uq5 жыл бұрын
@@andrew-paulclements1502 you're going by what a fallible human philosopher speculated about, and I'm going off what the one who claimed to be God said, so we're coming from two astronomically different worlds here. Jesus (and all of the Bible) claim that humans by default are servants of Satan, whether we think we are or not until we repent and accept Christ as Savior. If you actually read the Bible you'll see why you can't be against Christ, yet not for Satan. The statement in and of itself is a contradiction.
