@@kaptainkatz1411 There's a bunch of jarring context inconsistencies that keep you from suspending disbelief for the rest of the over simplified "story", and sadly these things aren't even the biggest issues. Honestly, if the storyline had more to do with residual effects of the head trauma from his accident causing our protag to hear the voice of a strange woman that most certainly can't be his sister, while stumbling across completely unrelated serial killer stuff in a park, and not the overdone plot that he has some misrepresented ptsd/guilt demon psychosis going on, it might be more interesting.

Personally I felt like his voice actor was pretty bad too, he never sounds as worried or upset as he should given the circumstances. But I agree, the writing was not good either. And yeah, the siblings having different accents does seem like a weird choice.
@fullofwish3 жыл бұрын
@@punkuke Maybe I'm giving the direction too much credit here, but I took his voice as slightly more calm than the situation calls for because he just left Generic Mental Institution and is probably heavily medicated. But there's also the mechanic where his anxiety seems to pique and things get fuzzy and he has to close his eyes to calm himself, so idk if it has anything to do with that or if it's just the common horror protagonist apathy. Seems like there's always a fine line between that and over-acting, but I give the actor credit for his delivery because likely he was directed to give it that way, and it's a rare occasion in an indie game where it sounded like they actually understood the lines they were reading. The bar is very low lol.

exactly how i feel. and although the demonization and misrepresentation of mental illness is uncomfortably normalized in indie horror games, this one feels particularly worse since the developers were self-aware enough to write a whole introductory paragraph about how they understand the seriousness of mental illness ("great care taken"). they KNOW how prevalent the misrepresentation of mental illness is in indie horror games, so much so, they felt the need to put a disclaimer - and yet they still messed it up! just ten minutes of research and they'd have a far less reductive take on ptsd. they also wouldn't have exclusively referred to mentally ill people as "mentally disturbed" individuals - so lacking in self control they need to be thrown into an asylum where they can't talk to anyone. i am honestly so done with this brand of horror game :/
@notrealnamenotatall24763 жыл бұрын
...I think it goes without saying that almost all knowledge this game has on PTSD is wrong, but then again it's only there for a crutch. It's not like the creator of the game set out to do real research before he chose a mental illness out of a hat. I know this shouldn't irritate me as much as it does, but it's just so lazy. Because there's a good chance that the only reason it was implemented was for the eventual "We were imagining it the whole time!" trope.

The depiction of PTSD in this game is similar to the one in Bloober Teams "Blair Witch" - and neither are terribly accurate, though "Blair Witch" had some accurate moments. PTSD in severe cases is like trying to move on with your day / your life while also reliving a traumatic experience on loop. For some folks this means hallucinations but usually it's distraction, paranoia, anxiety, confusion, and mood swings - all of which is possible to recreate in a game, but doesn't necessarily make the game fun to play or understand. I wonder what the next big horror game mental illness of choice will be. I'm so tired of these "oops I was crazy the whole time" """twist""" endings. And there's three more chapters, when you've already got the whole story figured out? Here's an idea - make a scary game without also giving the main character a mental illness. Maybe they could be stressed and guilty instead of "insane", or forgetful with poor impulse control, or a strong believer in gang stalking and mind control. It's entirely possible to be a functional member of society and have wacky beliefs or behaviors - just as it's possible to be a diagnosed schizophrenic and still be a functional member of society. Nonetheless I'm interested in seeing the rest of this, if only to enjoy your snark and complain about the story in the comments. The park looks lovely. The news articles don't sound realistic. I'm not sure why Alex has a British accent and Sam sounds like a charming customer service pro in her 30s. The kidnapper is genuinely scary to look at, strong shades of Momo. But the game seems repetitive and slow, and I can't imagine a payoff awaits beyond "oh yeah I remembered my trauma and now I feel terrible and want to die" - which is no fun.

I didn't like how the narrator described his own PTSD at all, and it made me a little skeptical about the game's statement of their respectful approach to the subject of mental illness, but I tried to step into this giving them the benefit of the doubt. It still managed to disappoint me.

I feel like busywork and back and forth gives a fitting feeling of frustration from the character's PoV, but there should be a better way to have the player experience the compulsions or delusions and the resulting emotions.

i don't usually comment on videos (because i generally dont have anything to add to the conversation) but upon rewatching this one i noticed something. it really bothers me in games that get most of their lore/exposition through notes and specifically fake news articles that... the articles never actually read like real news. they read like infodumping. they read like someone telling a story as opposed to... news. i'm not saying that game devs (often solo ones, at that) need to become journalists or anything but like. do they read newspapers? do they not think "ok, i have to write a newspaper article for my game, maybe i should read some articles online and figure out how they're written before i tackle this"? i think having an element of realism is necessary to build tension in psychological horror and having weird goofy articles like this kind of breaks immersion? (edited to add: john talks about suspending disbelief at the end of the video, but in regards to the actual "environment" of the game -- i think this also extends to lore and exposition within the game, as well as just the general idea) i'm not a dev but i'm a hobbyist writer and i spend more time doing research than i do actually writing. maybe because of that i notice these sorts of things more. but like does this bother anyone else?? the article at 25:28 specifically had me squinting because i feel like you'd never see an accident described as a play-by-play like this? "it seemed too late for any help until SUDDENLY" "later it turned out that xyz" like no journalist writes like this. i have never read a news article in real life like this.

I regularly read a small local newspaper known for having crappy journalism and it's got nothing on the articles in this game

Does the stabber have a Jeff the Killer face??? Or Momo??? I'm surprised that a game that supposedly depicts mental illness inoffensively didn't name the hospital. It's kinda off that it's referred to as a hospital for mentally disturbed people.

I saw it mentioned that the devs are Austrian, so as with a bunch of other strange things in the game, maybe it's a language issue and less a sensitivity issue. Not naming the place just seems like lazy writing (since it's not where it takes place, it doesn't get a name like the park) though.

So far the only game recently that I’ve seen do PTSD and other related mental illnesses in a tasteful and fun way was “In Sound Mind”; but I mean….at least this one had a cool atmosphere. And I thought the voice acting was really good. That’s kinda where my compliments stall lol

Bet this is gonna be another game that totally misrepresents mental health issues. Man, this dev really doesn't know how to write a news article. 29:24 Also, that's literally the Momo face. Shouldn't it just be a regular guy?
@bigpooper41563 жыл бұрын
I choose to believe that everything that doesn't make sense in the game is just because the dev completely cluelessly just thinks that's what PTSD does to you. British accent despite calling 911? PTSD makes you British. Momo guy? PTSD makes suspicious people appear to emit monkey sounds and look like momo. Bad graphics? PTSD turns off ray tracing. It's funny to imagine the dev as some bumbling buffoon who has no idea what they're writing about. More fun than the truth, which is, I assume, the dev is ignorant and misrepresenting PTSD and is just too lazy to be logical and consistent and the momo face model was cheap

As a current mustang owner and from the land of the blighty 🇬🇧 mustangs are a little rarer (like a lot of American cars I guess) so they are a little confidence boost...Until you need fuel 🤦♀️😂 Have to say though John your English accent is on point 👍🤣🤣

Like with motorcycles. Some people get certain cars, just to look "cool" but have little to no desire to master that machine. So they end up in really bad accidents, just trying to show off. Mustangs crashing, is a meme at this point. Because they are muscle cars, they prioritize power over handling, meaning they can be very difficult to control. Especially if someone doesn't know what they are doing, has no training, and doesn't even practice or hoon in safe areas like empty parking lots, just to get used to the car. My point is, did the main character just Mustang his own sister? While she was a passenger? My favorite Mustang crash video, is when one almost loses control, than another right after it almost hits the camera guy....One distracts, the other attacks. THEY ARE EVOLVING.
