HART L. WEAVER - 1929 HAWAII TRIP

The Weaver Family was grounded in the Motor Car Sales business in Northern California. Pierce Arrows and Studebakers. We recently received a donation. It was a metal toolbox containing 16 mm films. There was a total of 16 six inch reels, all of the edge code were dated to be 1929 and 1930. Twelve were filmed in black and white, four were filmed in Kodacolor. This film you're watching was difficult to transfer as the film was a copy and the edges were transparent making it difficult (or next to impossible to copy without an abundance of flickering making it impossible to view without going crazy.
We believe this film was taken in Waimanalo Beach despite the lack of geographic features that could nail down the location. No Rabbit Island. Not Twin Mokes. This was 2 years before construction began on the Pahonu Hale. We are speculating the luau finale took place at the Shriners Beach Retreat.
There is also the possiblility one of the guests at the luau is the Host, Mayor John H. Wilson. Great Pali scenes, No Waikiki images. Just the homey intimacy of an "All Windward Oahu" viewing

Great footage! When I was in my late teens, early 20s, I used to scale the pali cliffs looking for old bottles and relics. Have you ever read “Experiences of a Medical Student in Honolulu and on the Island of Oahu 1881”? If not, I highly recommend - gives great details about riding around the island on a horse, including going over the Pali and exploring Waimanalo and Kailua in the 1880s.

I found the book on Google Books and one can read it right online as an ebook. Thanks for the tip. The Chapter headings alone sound exciting.

@@KailuaKidsorry I just saw your reply now. Glad it’s available online, it’s a fun read. Does the online version include the photos? On a side note, my kids and I just picked up several film reels that someone was giving away (several boxes of mostly 8mm and 16mm film reels, along with 8 projectors. A lot of the reels are 1960s… just found a reel titled WWII Bougainvillea. The previous owner was a film maker and even recorded the last Beatles concert on his 8mm camera when he was a teenager. My kids and I want to preserve all the reels
