Brings back some memories. Got married in 1979. Our first car purchase together was a 1971 Datsun 510 station wagon with the 1.6 liter and a manual trans. Was a good car and in a lot better shape, of course. Sold the car and kept the wife for 44+ years so far.

Sounds similar to our scenario I ended up putting a 2 lt motor in it, that went a bit better, one day the spring in the rear door hatch snaped and it wouldnt close properly after that and with a little force to get it to close a ended up bending the hinges, almost impossible to find a replacement spring and hinges, I had it for 14 years before selling it.

this came up as a suggestion...binge watched all the episodes since this 510 acquisition. Psyched to see how this turns out.

I just started building a Datsun 280z over on my channel, but being able to build a wagon like this is an absolute dream. Enjoy the build!

I think he meant there was 2.5 out of 10 left of the car. I would put 2x3 square tubing in the rockers to keep it in one piece, that’s what I’ve done in a couple cars, then I tied the roll cage into the 2x3’s in the rockers

If the rust turns the Datsun into a dead end, please decide quickly, cut your losses and move on to another small bodied import that has been galvanized. I don't know if they sold Hyundai Excel/Pony X3 where you are but they are cheap around here. They are an excellent but under-rated platform for modding. The boat motor is why I'll keep watching this series. Good luck.

This might be in better shape than the mustang but i think its going to be a bit harder to fix. Which im sure isn't a problem for you. Great job on the mustang so far. Can't wait to see both finished.

Just in case you don't know. The history of Datsun, basically Nissan over in Japan, was worried about sending cars to the US because if the US market didn't like them, they didn't want to be embarrassed, so they created the brand Datsun to send to the states, so to see if people would like them and when people started Liking them, they turned around and renamed them Datsun by Nissan and then changed it over to Nissan 100% in the early 80s
@twoeightythreez Жыл бұрын
Datsun was literally the "son of DAT" which formed in 1917. Nissan acquired Datsun in 1932, and prior to the acquisition of Datsun, was basically an industrial conglomerate, something like Mitsubishi but smaller. Nissan decided to concentrate on cars (and trucks) after WW2 not only to satisfy domestic demand, but also because they, like most Japanese manufacturers after the war, were not allowed to build any combat vehicles. The Datsun brand absolutely was not created to "test the waters" In the USA, Datsuns were simply the entry level models within the Nissan company; Nissans were far too expensive for the US market (as evidenced by the Cedric, sold from 1963-1965). It was a very well built, premium car, but there would be little debate which a typical American would've chosen at the sams price point (A 4cyl Nissan or a V8 Cadillac?) Even if your explanation for why Nissan decided not to sell Nissans in the USA (with a few exceptions in the early 1960s, the patrol and the Cedric) has truth to it, you are incorrect, the Datsun name is from LONG before Nissan even thought to sell overseas. In Hindsight, its actually a shame Nissan axed Datsun in the 1980s, they could've simply used Nissan as the luxury brand instead of "Infiniti", and the loss of Datsun customers who didnt know what a Nissan even was wouldnt have handed Toyota the US market on a silver platter. Believe it or not, Datsuns were one of the #1 selling imports back then.

Someone's probably already made this comment, but be sure to cross-brace the body (side-to-side and front-to-back) using the door jam structure before you cut out the floor.

Build yourself a perimeter frame. Make it easy to fit your motor in. Then your floors are whtever you make

Man I hope the boat motor works out. Wish we could hear it start up. If it’s not good you can always use the 350 from the mower well the go cart. Where ever it’s at. Very cool series on this bro.

Back in the late 70's I was a panel beater at Vauxhall GM UK at the time our head office was Datsun dealers as they never had a bodyshop we got all their crash work , a Datsun 180B estate very rotten arrived it was about 5 years old and had been brush painted , I was told to put a rear quarter panel and rear door on it , I was told it was a Ziebart warranty I was told they steam cleaned the cars and treated over moisture trapping it in , it was a total waste of time and money but suppose it kept the owner happy .

I don't know, maybe you can consider a bodydrop.... Like that Fairlane on the mustang, but maybe a turbo mustang....

A lot Worse cars have been saved before, so Yes i would say it is savable, up until 1990 onwards Japanese cars did Rust some quite badly after 1990 they were on top of the rust problems! All classic cars RUST yes even fibreglass cars ie Corvette they Rust the frame away!! With ANY older classic car UNLESS VERY well looked after EXPECT RUST!!!!

News for you. Datsun cars were only supposed to be used for three to five years the recycled. The metal was thin for a reason..Datsuns policy was to scrap after three years. It creates jobs and keeps new cars and development on the road.. really it was lease the car then go get a new model same payment.

if you build a complete frame and then drape most of the peeled outerskin of the datsun over that you dont realy need anything of the floor and most of the rockers , the reardoor could be cut completely out replard by a piece of sheetmetal welded in the hole then the window cut out and placed back in the real , think the front panels can be found new all you need is the vin the windows and some of the trimpieces the rest you can either buy replacement parts for or make from scratch kzbin.info/www/bejne/hF7dm6V9i51_gbs mightve been a better idea to start with a body thats a little more commonly available

Are you a You Tuber just looking for content? If so you bought a sufficient amount. Are you a skilled metalworker/welder who wants to showcase their talents? Then go for it. But lacking those you have a LOT on your hands and as a long time Datsun 510 owner (including two previous wagons, and still have a two door) I think you would be better off looking for something more substantial to work with. I'm 66 years old and have owned over 40 cars. Many were rusted..., but not like this wagon. The repairs were lengthy but there was something to weld on to. I'd say move on to something better but if not then I wish you the best. Just don't let enthusiasm get a head of wisdom.

i think he f.. up.. 100 % he did not think this through.. the way he is aproching this build is mest up... i hope he proves me wrong... there is a good reason motorheads do not mess with 2 stroke marine engines.. U need to resonate that exhaust or it will not start.. physicist and ur moms support does not go well together. i really really hope that he does build that beast. but yeah conntent creator is called now a days.. u may geet famous some day..

Jesus Christ man,,,, that poor little rocket is absolutely fingered! I recon you might be better finding a decent Datsun 1600 sedan and attempt to transfer all the wagon specific bits over to IT, rather than frig around with that much rust. You will fix most of the rust you see and there will be nearly the same amount of work to do AGAIN in the shitty rust you DONT see yet.
