Harvest the police horse is getting ready to walk his beat one last time. This 17-and-a-half hand Clydesdale/quarter horse mix has been officer Mark Wubbena's partner since 2001.

Wonder if the horse understands it's retiring? As an officer, l'd want to adopt it and keep it forever.
@R.M.MacFru4 жыл бұрын
I don't think the mounted police are given that option like the K9 unit officers are. I can see why if the cities in question have residency requirements for their officers; they quite literally would not have adequate space to keep one. Where I live you have to have at least an acre of land to be able to keep a horse.

@@deniselancaster6888 ... You're welcome. The reason I know about the space requirements is that my family had a horse when I was little, but we had to keep it at a boarding stable in a neighboring county due to the lack of land (we were in the suburbs, but the quarters were still too tight there).

The whole point of a police horse retiring is because they can no longer be ridden. Either they are to old to support the weight of their rider because of arthritis, or because they are just to old to be in the service so the best option is to let them live out their golden years knowing that they did great and it is now time for them to rest. Of course, they'd be lovely companions though. Just no riding.

My old eventing gelding was a police horse. He can't take the concrete, so I got him. Nothing wrong with him soundness wise besides that the concrete was hell on his joints. I evented with him for two years until we retired him.

Patchwork The Noodle but a lots of horses like to be ridden, but if the horse is fine but just old sometimes riding is good for them. They actually like working and if they don't they sometimes become depressed I sounds kinda cruel but it totally isn't.

We had a ex police horse when I was a kid, carmest horse ever. When we were riding around town she was the horse you always put the learner riders on - she used to look both ways when crossing a road and would not move if she would see a car comming.

The horses and center saved me and I couldn’t be more thankful for this family of people and horses I’ve come to have. This is the best retirement this horse can have and is going to gain a lot of love especially for that personality

Let’s hope that after he’s served at his second home when he’s done there they find a good rescuer retirement for him so he doesn’t end up at a kill pin for slaughter as a lot of service horses do.....

usually, therapy barns keep horses forever and have retiree horses for people who dont want to ride or cant yet but still want the benefits of being with the horses. One of mine, who ended up lame from a genetic disorder later in her life (Not painful lame, just a limp. she`d still gallop around the pasture) retired to a program like that. I still visit her every once in a while.
@kmk29825 жыл бұрын
Rarely, if ever, does something like ever happen anywhere in US. Most Police Dept.'s retire their horse's to any officer, past or present, home's. If they cannot be found a home in that way, they go to therapeutic riding barns & are some form of therapy for special needs kids & adults. When too old to be ridden, they then become "grooming therapy horses". This helps develop courage & confidence in children & adults who cannot manage to ride; they then brush them. Once it is time to put the horse down, it is done with the permission of the former breeder/owner, then the PD, & the PD officer. The horse then is put down VERY gently by a vet. Then buried at therapeutic barn sites. Often in their pastures. Usually a tree or shrub or flowers are then planted to become that faithful companions headstone.

First, while I can appreciate the concern as that is a horrible fate for so many wonderful horses, what a total buzz kill your comment was after watching such a beautiful story! I would think there are agreements made or contracts signed stating that the retired police horses cannot ever be sold for profit and basically are ensured a safe and good home wherever they end up. I for certain some police departments have exactly that in place.
@eliburton81394 жыл бұрын

Beautiful, poignant, a little sad but more so sweet. I wish there were videos that highlight police, border patrol and military equine units. These horses have to be the brightest, sturdiest and most courageous of horses to do what they do. There isn't as much reported about them as there should be. It is said that 1 police horse is equal to 10 police officers (on the ground). That's an incredible statistic that really identifies their tremendous value to the police and the public. Have a great retirement Harvest! You certainly earned it!
