Hmmm. Saved my seeds, and tried to see if they would germinate. I put them on a barely damp paper towel in a baggie, but they molded. Any ideas? Would a quick dip in a weak bleach solution help?
@MidwestGardener7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if the bleach would help or not. Sometimes if you don't leave the eggplant on the plant long enough, you won't get good germination. When I've saving seeds, I will usually leave them on the plant until I'm pretty sure it is overripe. I've never used paper towels much for testing seeds, but maybe you could change the paper towels every couple of days. Or you could just plant some in some soil and see if they come up. It can take a couple of weeks for them to sprout and they need it fairly warm.

grt video thx hunn. i wanted 2 know if i can go 2 supermarket and get some vegetables and save they seeds 2 would they grow? if i did what you did? plc reply thx
@MidwestGardener6 жыл бұрын
Well, Aleshaa, it depends. It really depends on what type of vegetable you are talking about, and whether the vegetable is "mature". For instance, with peppers and eggplants, you really need to save seeds from mature fruit. Take a Jalapeno.....if you save seeds from a green Jalapeno, the seeds won't grow. If you let a Jalapeno mature to a red color, then those seeds will grow.
@billastell37532 жыл бұрын
This is pretty much what I do with minor differences. l left my excess fruit on the plant 1/2 way through November. It had been frosted hard several times and looked half rotten. Squeezed the seeds into a bowl of water to separate pulp from seed. Pour it through a sieve and placed the seeds on a piece of newspaper. Flipped them with a knife a few times to dry. I do the same with tomato and other seeds. It works well.

Thanks Bill! It's always good to hear how others do things.

Is it necessary to let it overripe for this long? Can the seeds not grow if they are collected from a fully grown eggplant?
@MidwestGardener2 жыл бұрын
The overripening mainly makes dislodging the seeds easier. If you don't want to let it ripen longer, I would say give it a try less ripe.
@JC-oh2ws4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, how long did it take to fully dry? I read some say 3-4 weeks???!!!really? Great video, very useful thank you
@MidwestGardener4 жыл бұрын
Hi JC. I'm glad that you found the video to be useful. It's always good to hear when they help someone. I don't remember exactly how long I let them dry, but for most of my seeds, I usually let them dry for a week or two. Then I check to make sure they are dry. After 4 or 5 days, a lot of times, I will unstick the ones that are stuck together, so they can dry separately.

+Midwest Gardener what if the eggppant is not ripen
@MidwestGardener8 жыл бұрын
Well, Andrew, you can still try it. What will happen is you will probably end up with some seeds that are mature and ready, and some seeds that are not. When you dry them, the mature seeds will stay a golden color, like the ones in the video. The seeds that aren't mature will shrivel up and turn black. Then you would need to separate the good ones from the bad ones. A lot more work, but it can be done.
