My husband is currently moving an old pile of firewood. Some of that birch bark is the only thing left after the wood has rotted away! Durable stuff that birch bark is. I ironically live in Birchwood, Alaska.

You can harvest birch bark off a living tree without hurting it :)
@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid3 жыл бұрын
That’s depends on how it is done. Real harm can be done if it isn’t done correctly. We have plenty of downed trees so there’s no need for us to take from a healthy living tree.

if you do sew make the stitches one long and one short so that the birch does not crack. If The stitches on one line it weakens the birch. Do not sew in the lines on the birch it is a weak part of the biircch.

Mary Zylema thanks so much. I never heard of boiling it but I have used a wet towel with a hot iron if it gets too dried up to work with. You can see how I do it in my video where I make a larger basket here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZ2XpY2Znqd4ma8
