Harvesting California Poppy Seeds

Nice, to the point instructional video. Your delivery is much like gardening: soothing and healthy. The lack of hype is refreshing. I never grew California poppies until this year, but they thrived in the heat and right through our "severe" drought with minimal care. Hopefully I'll find more than the one seed pod I have located(I tossed hundreds of annual seeds (Zone 5b) into a brand new garden extension (2'x16') and every annual Bachelor's Button and Lanceleaf coreopsis seed germinated and grew to maturity. If you're passionate about gardening, you should do more videos. You have a warm, gentle manner that should win many followers.

This is exactly what I needed to see, thank you so much! I was taken aback when the video started and saw another young person like me with a garden. I just turned 22 and I spent the day planting more berry plants, preparing my summer garden beds, watering my cold weather crop, and ordering herbal seeds. Others my age could care less about whether or not I could make tea from the plants I grow or how to convince mason bees and mantises to stay in my garden. Definitely going to subscribe since you seem like an amateur gardener like me just doing the best they can! :)

I can totally relate to you...I found myself browsing a seed catalog the other day and marking off what I wanted, all the while feeling like I was giving off old lady energy. I have found that a few people our age have been getting into gardening lately though. Good luck with the mantises! I can never get them to stick around for long...same with ladybugs.

@@birdsgarden5382 I always find myself at the seed stand at every store I really wanna to work on establishing berries this year. I also made a compost bin yesterday! And here's a thought, I value Old lady vibes to responsible adult vibes. People our age are getting into potted plants, a garden is a lil different. First of all, all the pests! As for pests, I only have had issues with aphids, powdery mildew, and Bermuda grass in my beds😭 I might make a Gardening Instagram soon because I might try to sell cut flowers and plants. I have some fig cuttings I'm trying to get going!😁

Hi I live in Manchester North West England UK. I have CP growing. I've never seen them before and I think they came from a pack of wild flower seeds. They are incredibly beautiful. Your video has helped me immensely. I had no idea how to harvest the seeds. I do now. Many thanks for a great video. Tony

Thanks for info. I bought a house last spring that had poppies that took over the front yard. I cleaned them up when they dried up, but I was too late....the pods reseeded the entire front yard again. I pulled about 3/4 of them before they even flowered. I did leave plenty to frame the front of my yard and a few on the sides. They were beautiful. Now they are loaded with pods, so now I know what to do with them! I'm going to pull them off and store them so I can have seeds in case I need to replant more poppies next spring.

Have you (OP) or anyone else ever actually grown new plants from CA Poppy seeds that were harvested when their pods were green but also forming ridges? The most knowledgeable gardeners all say to wait until the pods are brown & so dry that they are beginning to split open . . . then to carefully remove those pods & place in a container that will keep the seeds inside when they do pop open . . .

Thank you for the great video. Grew lots of californian poppies in my London garden this summer. For the first time. They've now all bloomed. Really beautiful. Just looking at them makes me happy. Love the way they close up and go to bed when it gets dark. Didn't know how to harvest the seeds until watching your lovely video. When you put the seed pods in containers do the seeds just come out of their own accord or do you need to get them out manually? By the way, you look lovely in your summer hat and braids. Like a poppy yourself.

So you can pick them while they are still green? I thought you had to wait till they were starting to turn brown. Glad to know this way works as well.

I usually make paper envelopes to put my saved seeds in, but you can use whatever you have on hand - like maybe a tiny jar :)

Where do I get poppy seeds for planting? Walmart, Home Depot, Amazon? 🤔 I already got some millet seed stems for birds, I think I just take some seeds, and pour the seeds onto a pot of dirt soil and water them lightly once every week 🤷‍♂️
