I'm in Australia. I found out about you from the propagation video on growing a greener world. I had wonderful success this winter growing California poppies, sweet peas, larkspur, bachelor's buttons. My best plant was rubeckia. I might confuse you as it is now summer in Australia. I had wonderful success propagating too. I've grown dahlias from seed. Propagated Russian sage and lavender. I've got eggplant 🍆 too. We have no frost here so everything survives. I even over wintered my capsicum and now have baby capsicum again. I'm hoping to tell you about some Australian natives and drought tolerant plants. Have you heard of Lambley nursery in Australia. It's the most amazing drought tolerant garden. We had a terrible drought here 2 years ago. It was incredible. It made us all think so much about water usage. I think there are not enough gardening channels about drought tolerant plants/ gardens. I think it is something someone can really look into. There are so many areas in the world that lack rainfall and water. The plants are so fantastic they take the heat and rely on little care and look fantastic. Once you've lived thru a drought so bad the ground is yellow and water restrictions are so tough you are carrying buckets everywhere, we couldn't even use a hose. It is possible to make a beautiful garden with little water.

Very good you learned that bc I didn’t. I sowed about a thousand seeds in spring and you already know none of them grew. So I didn’t sow anymore thinking poppy wasn’t for me. Now I know I made a mistake wrong time of year.

2:20 number of seeds in the pack: I think the number of seeds per pack may be influenced by the variety. The $1.78 pack of seeds I bought -- "California Poppy, Extra Golden", 12" - 18 " tall -- contains over one-hundred-fifty seeds. They are tiny! Much smaller than the ones of the variety you've seeded, here. From sunny Southern California, thanks for the tips!

How fortunate to come across another NCian right as I’m getting into gardening, so that I don’t have to translate hardiness zones or anything (though it seems like you do a substantial bit of that for people in other climates anyway)! I’m in zone 6b, and at 7200’ (Santa Fe, NM). I’ve had a difficult time with poppy seed. I showed them in the fall, but nothing grew. We have snow that will stay on the ground for a week or two, and will happen several times each winter. So, I cold stratified the seeds early this spring, and spread them in March. We had a late snow, and a few rainstorms, and I finally found a few poppies come up well away from where I spread the seed (carried by the rain?). Do you have any suggestions??
@BrieThePlantLady Жыл бұрын
It’s hard to say as I’ve never lived/ gardened in that climate. I would ask at a local botanical garden or extension service. I’m sure you can grow poppies there but I’m not sure the timing. I’d imagine you would have to irrigate and amend your soil with a lot of organic matter.

I sowed Shirley poppies in Oct in 5b, they germinated but now I don’t see them, not sure they’ll make it. I use bottles too, cut in half clear plastic Simply Orange bottles, I put them over seedlings to protect them through the winter, pile mulch around them, spray painted the caps black so they don’t scream green plastic! I’m doing that with Lupines I transplanted too late in the season, so far so good. Wish I’d done that with the poppies too.

Hello Brie. I love mass plantings of poppies. I'm going to sow my California poppies as a border, and I'll sow my Lauren's Grape poppies behind them. I have, at least, most of the poppy seed varieties from the company Select Seeds. Are you familiar with all of their poppy varieties? I hope to sow them all before the end of Dec.

I’m in zone 10 (South Florida) and I planted poppy seeds recently and they seem to be growing nicely so far. I have them in some containers and I’m watering them fairly regularly due to the heat and humidity here. They’re in regular potting mix with maybe a little manure. Since California poppies aren’t recommended in this zone, it’ll be interesting to see if they survive.

Hi Brie! I sowed my poppy seeds 2 weeks before Thanks giving and on Black Friday. The cats outside are just using the area as their litter box and specially the ones in the barrel pots as you can seen the soil were constantly dug. What are the chances of my seeds not making it? Up to when can I sow poppy seeds in preparation for Spring bloom?

I think January is the cutoff for sowing. Try adding chicken wire over the area to prevent the cats until the plants germinate and get established

I just purchased my poppy seeds online and the vendor says they need to be "cold stratified" to bloom in the Spring. I am in zone 7, Fuquay Varina, also. If I plant now without any cold treatment, will they still bloom in the Spring?
@BrieThePlantLady3 жыл бұрын
That’s very strange that the seed supplier would have cold stored them before shipping. Here’s the thing, if you wait to sow they likely won’t grow so I’d just do it and see. Next year, visit me as i sell pre stratified poppy seed locally.
