Years ago out here in Oregon, I had a brush patch on Dad’s farm that thick. I put an electric fence in our garage and trained some young pigs to it. I fenced the brush patch with electric fence, threw lots of cracked corn into the thickest part and the pigs rooted it all out. Put new corn out every several days. Really worked except the neighborhood kids kept unplugging the fence.

Contact your local college, ask professors for volunteers to help. Especially the history and archeology students. Then the horticultural students can come out to study about invasive plants and work out a plan to get rid of them. Then call out the architect and engineering students to learn about historical builds and how to save it. In the end put a plaque on the front of the house thanking the college and students for saving a historic place. Or just offer to bbq for a group of church kids one weekend for help clear the land. Any grants out there?

I love the fact that you’re building the fence with what you have on hand. We do that all the time from necessity but I think those lean times when necessity taught us to make do with what we had was such a valuable lesson in stewardship that I would not have learned any other way. I really hope that as circumstances change and we have more that I still think from the “Make do” point of view.

Drip rails all around are critical. The spacing between the wood trim and the edge of the drip rail is vital. This Old House has some great vids on this topic. This will save a lot of wood rot on the trim if done correctly. I've seen roof installations where this wasn't even done! Crazy.
