That's actually smart to have the ladder up! No more bending in mud, but I suppose to be mindful of obstacles. Does that ladder fold straight up all the way? I always appreciate that you don't have music during your drone shots... thanks for taking raw recorded audio from the machine at work instead!

Yes the ladder can go straight up. If you watch the inside cab shot I showed looking out at the ladder you can see it’s all the way up. Have the latter horizontal or all the way up also keeps the ladder from knocking ears of corn off on the unharvested row.

I went through Wisconsin to Minnesota this weekend! First time I've been up there and wow it's nothing but corn fields and soybeans far as the eye can see!! Saw tons of combines working too, really cool.

Mike you are right about the snow. But 10 degrees Fahrenheit is the magic number. 10 degrees Fahrenheit or lower the snow will blow through the machine without sticking to the inside of it. It warms up to 11 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer and you will start plugging your sieves and everything else. Then you park in a heated shop overnight and steam power wash the inside of the machine out. Been there and done that lol.

Empty weight of the combine as stated is 31,000+ no light weight like the old F and F2's. We had a F with 23.1 on the drivers. One year we ended up going to 28.1 rice tires on the drivers, putting a mud hog on the rear, put a turbo of the 301 diesel engine off a 190XT, turned up the pump. That was a combine that would almost float on water.

@@countrygent4 You're right, 31,000 is a lot of weight, but not by today's standards. Keep in mind a Deere S660 weighs 44,077 lbs. A Gleaner with single drive wheels exerts less PSI on the ground than a Deere with duals, so a Gleaner with duals or tracks is really treading light.

@@CrestonMoore I did not realize that a JD is that heavy. Funny according to engineers I know at the JD combine plant they are going back to a multiple cylinder combine something like the Class combine. My best friend got one of the original IHC Axial Flow 1440 the first year out - GOLD watch fob and all. Also I saw the first year AC N6 combines that got hit in the corn head crossing a RR crossing with less than a 100 yours on the engine. What a shame.

I have always wondered by Gleaner was not marketed in Europe. Allis-Chalmers sold some orange painted Gleaners in the United Kingdom in the 1960’s. I’n recent years the Gleaner S series has been sold in Russia and China painted in red and sold as the Massey Ferguson T7.

Yes tracks are not a common sight on Gleaners. Years ago steal tracks were offered by Allis-Chalmers for rice Special L2 and L3 combines.

Every time I see one of these newer Gleaners it seems crazy that the unloading auger is identical to the one on our old K2. I'm not sure what year ours even is but I think early 80s. Some newer Gleaners have the turret style I've seen but not many that I know of at least. Thanks for the video!

The pivot auger is a Gleaner standard for several generations. Of course this new auger at 4.0 bu per second can really move out some grain. A John Deere S690/790 unloads at 3.8 bu per second. The Gleaner turret auger was an option for the C62, latter R72/R62, R75/R65 and R76/R66. The S series has only Ben available with a pivot auger.

Down here in Kentucky still a lot of corn and soybeans out in the field actually I seen a lot of soybeans that was lost from all the rain they were hundreds of acres under water and I would say they lost their soybean crop there but the weather has been so wet nobody can get in the fields to do nothing it's going to be a shame when they're trying to harvest crops from last year and put outcrops this year that's my opinion

I remember when I was a kid in the early 80’s that snow set in mid October and it was not until planting time combines could return to the field. I remember seeing an IH 915 harvesting corn on one side of the field and a 1086, 1066 and 686 working on tillage and planting on the other side of the field. Too bad their won’t drones and digital cameras back then.

To an extent. When it’s on the ground like this video the combine can roll along well. If the snow is on the corn leaves it will build up on the inside of the combine faster. If the temp is low the snow will feed right through the combine well.

There was a time when I'd have agreed with your opinions on fall tillage but that time has passed. Neat farm with all the AGCO equipment.

It all depends on your cropping rotation and weather. It amazes me how tillage has changed. When I was a kid in the 70’s farms plowed, cultimulched, disked and field cultivated before planting. Now a one pass vertical tillage tool or a strip Till bar can accomplish all the heavy tillage did. But in some soils and climates heavy fall tillage is still the way to go.

@@bigtractorpower There is no place on earth that tillage is needed. No soil type, no climate. All tillage tools destroy soil structure. All tillage tools decrease water infiltration. All tillage tools increase weeds. All tillage tools decrease organic matter. When you stop doing tillage and exercise some patience at harvest only running with the soil in mind it is amazing how quickly all the claims made in tillages names lose all traction in the real world.

Now that is truck isn’t it. It would be cool to show but the combines rotor is in a cage and hard to see at work. It is like a large washing machine spinning the crop material around a grate that strips the corn from the cob and pushing the grain through the grated holes that feed into the bin and the rest of the material back in the field. There is little space in this area to force the grain from the cob.

If snow and ice are such an issue in clogging the combine why not reroute the engine exhaust through the rotor to assist with internal melt , it seems usually you are trying to keep the engine cool in all that summertime dust ??

That would be a fire hazard. The crop materiel is dry and it only takes a spark to ignite it.

We run 40 ft. heads in the worst mud imaginable with duals and 4+4 and weight of the head is a non issue. The mud he is in would be no problem.

The ground is fairly muddy. That is where the tracks help out. For the ground to freeze up it really has to drop into the low 20s and teens. A 32 degrees it will snow but the ground will still be tacky.

Sure I was referring to radiator bleed off you know enough to get a job done I've seen plenty of filthy engine bays and radiators and no fire It's warm air not much needed to keep the show on the roll. Maybe 10% would sufice. But may l say we harvest mostly 45c days so no snow just tinder dry flag and trash.

Good question. As Gleanerman said the combines computer will indicate the loss, you will also see the grain on the ground and most likely you will heat and feel the combine working differently. Think about mowing the lawn in wet grass you can feel the mower deck sound different if wet grass starts to clog it and the engine starts sounding different. Thank you for watching and asking.

It is a Massey Ferguson Red 8425. You could order an AGCO Star in Massey red from the factory. A very few were built in red but they are out there. I hope to film an Orange 8360 in 2019. Stay tuned.

I would call it a mulch ripper. It can work down 15 to 18 inches. A coulter chisel will work 9 to 12 inches.

MUDHOG makes a kit to pit rear tracks on combines they are amazing when paired with ati tracks on front

The replies are pretty good. I would add the front drive wheel carries the most weight and the tracks help with traction and flotation up front. The rear wheel is often 4wd and adds extra power to pull. There are rear track kits but steering may be wider in the turns and upkeep on the rear track unit more. Tracks also add $50-$70K to the cost of the combine with the front set. A rear set would be even more of an extra cost.

Well they are significantly lighter than other combines and they will help them stay afloat better in mud. Never needing tracks would be hard to say because some time tires just won’t give you the traction you need. Tracks or tires in mud a Gleaner will not sink in as deep as a big Axial style combine and as a result not leave super deep ruts. I have a friend with a John Deere 9860STS that ends up many years harvesting in snow and mud who is seriously looking at Gleaner next time simply because it is lighter. He runs super floater tires on the 9860 but still get stuck from the weight of the combine.

Even with tracks that Gleaner left yield limiting compaction no tillage tool can remove. Patience pays in ag. A trait many farmers lack unfortunately.

It’s not a big deal. Not every pass is perfect. This was a bit of a swampy spot and a smaller field. There could be any number of reasons they left a gap. It’s also a dairy so maybe they planed to chop it originally and left a gap to pull the chopper through.

The ladder will go straight up. I think he just had it up to clear the next row of corn. If it was an 8 row you wouldn't need to.

why don't you doods utilise the heat from the engine cooling radiator to warm the interns of the combine elementary and what's more it's FREE. Snow ain't a problem in OZ but ignorance can be universal. Go well mate regards Frank (by name & nature)

The inside of the combine is full of dust and dry plant matter from the threshing. Heat and dust do not mix well and can be combustible. The key on a combine is the vent heat far away from the crop to avoid fire.

It’s never too late. Some years weather drags out the harvest to less than ideal conditions.

The warm ran out. Sometimes the weather just doesn’t cooperate but the crop has to be harvested despite the turn in the weather. Leaving a crop out is risky. One good wind storm and it will be flat on the ground.

It is only one field out of many harvested. The stalks were a bit wind swept but that does not mean the corn ears were not doing well.

bigtractorpower I know what your saying. I farm with my brother in Minnesota and have harvested in winter, which is tough. Still that’s not the best corn and I feel bad for any farmer with even a few off acres. There not much room for poor yields. I truly wish the best for all farmers.

I film all brands of combines. In my observation Gleaner S series have the cleanest sample and least loss.
