Harvesting Corn Silage and Filling The Silo! (2024 Fall Harvest)

Today we are harvesting corn silage and filling the Silo for our dairy cows. The 7810 John Deere is pulling the chopper. While the 7510 John Deere and 7405 John Deere haul loads back to the silo. Thank you all for watching! Let chop some more corn silage!

Really cool drone footage! Great job with that Aaron. Gives such a nice perspective of how beautiful the countryside is where you are, and how nice your farm is set up, and how well kept it is...That old Gehl blower really made that old MTA grunt! LOL! But you can l tell that the govoner is working good!

I still think this was the best scale for a dairy operation, and chopping with a 2 row harvester makes the most economical way of getting silage made.

Sorry I have not been around for 8 or 9 days. Helene hit pretty hard. No power or water for 9 days. We were the lucky ones. All of our neighboring counties kinda got completely destroyed. Help pray for those folks for a quick recorvery. Everything they had is totally gone. Thats west of us. We are in Shelby N.C. But we made it. Loved the video. Can not wait for more. Thanks for letting me ride along.

We used to fill a 20×60 with an old Gehl Brothers blower. There was an attachment with an electric motor top of the blower that oscillated the blower pipe to help level the pile out. We'd get it full and the next morning it easily settled 3 to 4 doors over night. 4020 provided the power.

Putting the doors in the reminds of the time I was helping the neighbor put them in his silo. I had to clean the grooves before I put each door in. All was going well till I got to the very top. After I got the groove cleaned I went to put the door in and it slipped out of my hand and fell inside the silo. I had to leave for my regular job and he had to figure out how to get that without taking all of them back out. Luckily it landed with the handle up and he was able to get it with a baling hook on a long rope. That was a tall silo too!

Just like last fall, I am amazed that the Farmall M has enough horsepower to handle the silo blower. I grew up in central WI and helped on farms in my youth and never saw a M hooked up to a blower.

We used to blow with a SMTA or regular M. It sure makes them idle smoother and run better after they get a good workout.

about how much does a wagon load weigh? always loved puting silage up made more sence to me to do silage rather than chaseing a hay baler around all summer

Ought to have any carbon burned out of the SuMTA. Running a blower takes some grunt...can only imagine filling a silo over 70 feet tall. Glad the tire didn't go down in the field. That would've been a bummer.

i have never noticed this before but that is the smallest stave silo I have ever seen. There must be a story behind that. I looks like It was two silos at one time but I am totally guessing.

That was a common size silo into the 1940s and 50s when many farms had only 15-20 milking cows. I think it's 12 feet in diameter and a little over 30 feet tall. At that time it was also common for the silo to extended even below the barn floor 2 to 4 feet. The 2 white bands suggest that 10 feet was added on at some point.
