You folks there are doing a great service to our future farmers of this country by providing scholarships!

Millennial Farmer, first and foremost I want to publicly thank you and all production agriculturist for what y’all do. I am an Ag Science teacher and I use your videos to help teach my Plant Science, Ag Mechanics, and Intro to Ag Classes. It’s hard to take classes on a field trip out to a farm to see how production agriculture has changed and how more scientific and and technologically advanced it has become. Showing your videos allows me to bring a farm to the kids! Plus, we’re in cotton country not much corn or soybeans so it’s good for my students to be exposed to that. Once again, thanks for all you do with these videos.
@joshhandy88957 жыл бұрын
That's a win win situation for everyone. That's a very good thing that y'all are doing by testing the hybrids and using the money that the seed companies pay y'all for testing the different types of hybrids to provide scholarships for high school kids that are in agriculture to go to college. God bless y'all and hats off to y'all for doing that for those kids.

Hey Zach I don’t know if you’ll see this being it’s an older video but one thing that may help you guys is putting air down systems on the truck tires. They use em a lot in logging. I’m sure it’s not cost prohibitive for you guys but it’s an idea! Also super single tires on the wagons could help in mud as well. I’m just thinking out loud I suppose lol

Great video, approx how big an area is your county that you talk of? (eg miles north / south : east / west?) There is a certain amount of that sort of plot work done over here in the UK with small grain crops where the plot sizes are big enough to be really meaningful. It is always much better if you can information such as this related to soils and climate etc in your own area.

@MillennialFarmer7 жыл бұрын
Rightsideofthegrass we don't worry about any cross pollination. As far as maturity, they're all 90-95 RM. We also do plots that are 96-100 RM. Those are the standard ranges in our area for corn RMs.

How to do you load the planter to plant only 8 rows of one seed and the other 16 rows of another kind of seed when the hopper boxes on the planter feed 12 rows each? Good idea for a video next spring if you participate in the test plot again.
@57fitter7 жыл бұрын
I THINK they have a 16 row planter and keep 8 rows all the same(the control) and change the other 8 at each end.

No, it's a 24 row as he notes at 2:11 - 2:19.

Would you be able to show the results..... Not asking for hybrid numbers or even brands but i think it would be interesting for you to go over the paper you showed at the end with a bit more detail adding your thoughts. And explain for the non farmers how this works

I may do that. I'm probably not allowed to show the companies in a public forum, but without any names it wouldn't be a problem.
@tedkahler97387 жыл бұрын
MN Millennial Farmer I think it would be neat for you to tell well this x brand was lower moisture but lower yield and this is why you would plant lower yielding corn to get lower drying costs... and other things like that. I farm myself have a little KZbin channel and I like what your doing

@tractormark17 жыл бұрын
So what was the outcome? Was there significant yield differences?

mark head there was 1 very low yielding hybrid, but most of them were within 10 bushels of each other, which is very consistent.

MN Millennial Farmer so if they are so close is it worth repeating a test plot only this time varying the fertiliser application rates to see if the yields suffer or stay the same with lower rates thus saving money for the same amount of bushels?

@MillennialFarmer7 жыл бұрын
There is a company that refuses to be a part of this plot. They actually have their local dealer put up the funds to enter. It's a bonehead move by them. They definitely lost some respect from us through that decision. I understand their concerns with locally run, farmer plots, but everyone else enjoys being a part of our program.
@andrewmicas43277 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your very excellent explanation, I wish we had more sponsored University courses here in the UK, rather that the Government paying for non courses. Education should be for the benefit of society rather than education just for the halo effect of the individual. This stops the seed companies bullshitting you on this seed is a magic bean.

MN Millennial Farmer nice set up. We run two single dryers side by side instead of being stacked. It gives us about 1400 bph. We started small and have built on we currently can hold just shy 500,000 in dry grain. If we fill the wet tank back. I am impressed with your air transfer system, we do It all with legs and conveyors. I also like your pit unloading system.

Don't the corn varieties cross pollinate?
@57fitter7 жыл бұрын
Surely they do, but the resulting corn that's produced will not matter while it's going through a hog's digestive system. Or after that....
@imnotimportant6 жыл бұрын
That would only effect the next generation of the plant, and this is not seed corn so the corn is going to be consumed by people and animals or made into ethanol. Pollination would not effect this years yield.

So, who gets the profit on the grain then? The association, or the land owner? What does it cost to be in the association?
@MillennialFarmer6 жыл бұрын
We, the farmers keep the grain in exchange for the work it takes to plant and harvest it and keep the data. It doesn't cost anything to be a county member. The county gets membership money back from the state organizations which get their money from memberships and state checkoff funds.
@stevehelgeson15976 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Not a farmer but impressed with your work both in terms of the production value on the videos you post and your representation of agriculture. Drove pea harvesters for Green Giant down by Montgomery LeSuer areas when I was a kid. By no means made me a farmer, but did provide a great look at one part of the ag-production cycle.
@GlenironPa7 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing at this point/ harvest all the cross pollination of the different "hybrids" in the field makes no difference on the corn yield per hybrid standing in the field. Maybe you've got a super hybrid now though and don't even know from that massive hybrid corn "orgie"....rofl
