That's a really small lake for that amount of fish you stocked it with. Add to that the snakeheads, and it's not surprising you only got that small amount.

Ever heard of a seine? If you stock your pond you have to manage it by periodically harvesting the bigger fish. Therefore you have a continuos cycle and get far more than you put in (if multi sexed). With that shape of pond you can drag it from both sides to one end then harvest the keepers and put the others back. This will also help to track the health of your fish. No draining, no refilling, no restocking unless using only male hybrids, no wading in the mud. And I'm pretty sure the nets are cheaper than that pump.
@lifeinthailand8 жыл бұрын
+Robert L Your right, I did think I had all males, Was told that they were all males but 1/2 of the talipia had eggs in them, So I was given bad info again. This is the normal way to do it here though, Not that I do anything the normal way.

That pond is way to small for stocking with a 1,000 fish. Tilapia will die if the water gets below 50F. Something to keep in mind, a pond will reach maximum carrying capacity in two years without being stocked. So minimum you need to remove some weight (fish) within 2 years or the fish will stop growing and you get new fish. I highly recommend reading up on Pond Management. Stock it a lot less with fish and come back to the pond in 6 months to a year and pull some out.

Did you feed these fish? Or did you just throw fish in and walk away? That's seems like a lot of fish to have to compete with each other. There was no where to hide. If you want to have a chance you can to put out protective shelters of some kind. Especially when they are little. I didn't see a single log in there. I am a fish tank owner, and from my perspective you may have an issue with it being overstocked. Putting in a thousand or so baby fish into your lake is fine at the beginning. However when they grow bigger, they will have issues with there not being enough space in the tank. If you do not separate the fish as they grow bigger you will encounter the problem that a lot of new fish tank owners have, and that is the tank is overstocked. An overstocked tank simply means there isnt enough room for your fish to grow, this will cause a wide range of factors to occur that may kill off your fish. This can be, competition over food so that fish which cannot compete will starve and die, Actual predatory competition from fish killing other fish, etc... Another problem I see could be the fact that there are a lot of invasive species which will simply outcompete your fish, or are even predators of them. Preventing them from coming in may be difficult since it could come from any nearby water source large enough to let them thrive in,. My suggestion would be to simply stock less fish into your lake :D, and possibly preventing your neighbours from fishing them out early

@lifeinthailand8 жыл бұрын
+Rob Bob's Backyard Farming Yes I have caught 2 different guys, Plus other people have seen lights around there in the middle of the night. And I am sure the snakehead ate there share.
@curezilla8 жыл бұрын
+lifeinthailand As large as that snakehead was, and the fact you found so many more, was a large part of your problem. Some pay to fish tanks here put bounties on them. Terrible carnivores.
@Bhatmann8 жыл бұрын
Whole Talapia is $1.49/lb or 53 baht cleaned at the market today in San Francisco. I've never tried it, I like salt water fish. I've seen how they raise talapia, not good, I'll pass on anything farmed liked that.
@lifeinthailand8 жыл бұрын
+Fidelity Quester That is cheaper than here, I know what you mean about farmed fish, Another industry that is trying to kill us, Not a lot different than the chicken industry. Talapia is good and considering it is a warm water fish It is very good. Fish farms around here have them at market size in like 42 days, Just like chickens, That is not natural at all.

The water hyacinth may have killed off your fish by depleting the oxygen levels in the water.

Maybe, there was a lot, but I think it was the snakehead and the neighbors.

+lifeinthailand Aww =[ I really liked the lake farming even if you did lose a good amount to random fishers. I liked it to see the outcome and its not like you were looking to do commercial. Plus im not promoting poachers but in your area some of them might need it a bit more (speculation but i could be wrong). I just really liked watching your creation. It was like you created your own small ecosystem.
@richardwaite1647 жыл бұрын
I would assume lesson learned. what kind of control do you have over the pond/lake if any? snakehead's are not good and eat your fishes'. Can you make the pond bigger? was there any monitoring of the pond or did you just let it do its thing? seems you got hit on several fronts if that is all you have to show for 1000 fish 2 1/2 years later!
@lifeinthailand7 жыл бұрын
There were 2 problems, one was predator fish, and the 2nd was people helping themselves, a big problem here is poaching, I will never do this again, I raise my fish in tanks at home now.

What's the purpose of pumping out the lake? Is this something that is done because you own a lake or is it because you stock the lake and you're trying to count fish? I'm sorry but I'm a novice to these topics.
@sepukkusenpai96148 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure these fish die off if you don't harvest them

Obviously, your snake head ate them too... You don't want to stock predator fish along with carps and tilapia, of course... Next time you can probably stock carps and tilapia and protect the fishes from internal and external predators, may be ... :)
@lifeinthailand7 жыл бұрын
If you know anything about snakehead you know that you don't have to stock them, there well not be a next time, just after the fish that find there own way in now, well get just as many that way.
@sparkyjones5607 жыл бұрын
lifeinthailand snake heads do have a hard time eating even small catfish, so if you have a wandering snake head issue where they keep turning up its probably best to just stock some catfish and take the snake heads as a bonus. a pond like that and just net or trap and you would have a constant supply between the two species and screw the neighbors poaching from your pond. Draining it out though screws the life cycle up. better to net once or twice a year and trap throughout with a big trap that will only catch the larger fish since they take up the most resources and eat the most small fish. Anyways I really enjoyed your video. thanks for putting it up!

If your trying to grow out fish in a pond over 2 years, why would you put a predatory fish like a snakehead to grow with them.? They must have been snacking on the tilapia which is probably why you ended up with more snake heads in the end than tilapia..
@lifeinthailand8 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Ng Good point but we did not add the snakehead, Catfish, Climbing perch or gurami, They all found there own way in there.
@youngz13o8 жыл бұрын
Oh, how could those other fish end up in that pond? It looks isolated from other bodies of water.

In the rainy season they walk to the lake from the rice paddy.
